Cc And How Stupid Can You Be

so I'm on holiday and doing, I think, fairly well and being pretty careful after 9 months gluten-free and thinking that actually I do not know how strong a reaction can I get from gluten and maybe I'm one of the lucky who don't get any reactions at all. Then I go out for dinner (normally I eat at home or in carefully selected places) in a very popular place which clearly doesn't have a clue, so I order roast fish to be on the safe side.

And then my friend order pasta with arselle (mussels) but she does not eat her mussels because she likes the taste but not the texture. And, even if it seems incredible to me NOW, I think it is actually OK to eat the dozen or so mussels that have been in the pan with the hot spaghetti and I do not realize they are coated with gluteny oil. So I have them, and 45 minutes later my gut literally explodes - luckily I was back home by then.

The good news: a couple of imodium seem to have taken care of the gut part after I voided everything I had. No throwing up either. And yes, today I'm woozy, very tired and foggy brained, but it could be a lot worse. A LOT.  The bad news: I'm INCREDIBLY stupid. Ok, it all goes to experience, but...

I know everybody's reaction is different, but can anyway tell me if their main reaction is a bout of D followed by a bad hangover feeling? Because I'm 99% sure this was a glutening, but I can't exclude that the mussels weren't quite fresh or something. thank you...

yup - it sounds like you shot yourself in the foot!

i get *hateful* <that's my first sign, yay) then a headache, the big D, fatigue, etc - like i have the flu but no fever.  i think if you had food poisoning, you would know it - i've never had it but i understand it's bad enough to send you to the emergency room.  if you've been doing well this whole time, i would say you've been glutened.

don't beat yourself up too badly - i think we've all been there, done that!   i tend to drink alot of water and take hot showers.  i eat simply (i revert to my good ole turkey sandwiches), stay close to the bed/bathroom and ride it out.

feel better!   :(

Thanks for the post. Though you may be feeling lousy, it is nice to see someone be able to laugh at themselves (and make me giggle too).

Heck, even if I had just stuck to the fish and not eaten the mussles, the cross contamination from the restaurant's kitchen probably would have had similar results for me. But the mussles!?! You didn't! I hope they ate least tasted great.

That sounds exactly like a glutening to me. I hope you didn't get too irritable and that your headache isn't too bad.

But I wouldn't beat yourself up too badly. Yeah, you knew better and you did it anyway, but some lessons have to be learned the hard way. But the next couple days will be bad enough, no need to berate yourself too. Your body is already taking care of the negative reinforcement.

So you you ate wheat products every single day for 50 years without a problem but then in the 90's you discovered that wheat was your problem. That's confusing to me. It seems contradictory. Did you have a problem or not?

I spent my first 50 years eating wheat products every single day with no ill affects. Being a 6’2” Italian you can imagine what my diet was like and believe me I had an appetite that wouldn’t quit. In the 90’s once I discovered the wheat was my problem I avoided it and no longer had IBS.  I seriously doubt I have celiac but I appreciate your input and will let you know if I have a problem with wheat again. I’ve been eating things I’ve longed for for decades and have never felt better.

I would say two things and then I'm done. Many celiacs have been misdiagnosed for years with IBS. Testing for celiac disease requires regular and significant consumption of gluten for weeks/months in order to be valid.

Can the rest of your household eat the food with gluten instead of getting rid of it? Can you create one shelf, or partial shelf, for your new food in the pantry, in the fridge and in the cabinets as a start? My husband is not gluten free so we each have a cabinet, and separate shelves in the fridge. If we have to share space the gluten free foods go on the upper shelves so crumbs with gluten can’t fall onto them. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, if my sensitivity comes back i’ll do that but I am 74, in good health for my age and probably have been sensitive to gluten for over 30 years the beginning of which I didn’t even know or suspect It was gluten. I’m seen by my doctor every three months with fasting labs, he knows I avoid gluten and has never suggested I should be concerned. It is quite possible a doctor did those tests on me 30 years ago, I just don’t remember, if they did and they were negative that’s why I wouldn’t remember. If you are interested I’ll keep you posted, but from what i’ve read there is no cure for genetic celiac disease and right now I’ve never felt worse than diarrhea eating wheat or better than I do now eating wheat. If there is no cure I doubt my episode with an antibiotic is the cure which means I don’t have celiac. This antibiotic may be a cure for sensitivity however….i hope.
