No kidding.  The temperature was -11 at 8:30 this morning.  The kids in local areas had school today because there are no snow days left.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed peeps don't end up with frostbite or serious car accidents from this cold and ice.

Not sure where you are mommida but I am in northwestern PA and it  is the same here, -12 * and my grand kids were off to school because  there are no snow days left. My daughter drove them so they would not have to stand at the bus stop in that cold.

I am taking tomorrow off! 7 to 12 inches of snow, a high temperature of minus 4 and windchills of minus 27! If anybody comes out to buy a guitar tomorrow they are nuts!

nvsmom Community Regular

Blah. It's minus 25C without the windchill right now. With the windchills it's in the minus 30's. Blech. Tomorrow's HIGH is minus 26C. The high!! The low is minus 30 something...That's just so very wrong.

I heard that Regina (capital of Sakatchewan) is expected to get to -38C and have a strong wind that could take the windchill down to -67C.  I can't even imagine what that would feel like... that's 30C colder than us!

mommida Enthusiast

Years ago a bought this coat, the polar parka, from Eddie Bauer.  It is rated for -50 C.  It can feel stiff, but I am soo glad I kept it all these years.

I think it would be pretty hard to breathe at -67 wind chill!!?

I'm in Michigan.  A Troll.  (that means I live under the bridge/ lower peninsula.)

More snow coming tonight.  Just spent 1/2 an hour clearing the morning's snow and snowdrifts off the driveway.

Oh, for love of mike...you are all making me feel so bad and depressing the hell out of me.

It's 78 and fabulous here. I have just returned from watching a METS game (the hub's team) and we are sitting on the lanai, having drinks and feeling as if we are the only ones who have discovered this giant freakin secret to everlasting happiness.

It's called the SUN. B) and  27.24  N latitude and 80.23  W longitude

Please, get on a damn plane and come visit  lol

(but not all at once,ok....I only have so much room).

Although, there is a very nice ,reasonably priced clean hotel on the Indian River nearby that I can wholeheartedly recommend to you.

Pics of the spare bedroom, eh? Wellll, as soon as I get some black out drapes, sheets and pillows in there, I'll take a pic too.

I am waiting for the mastercard to flip to the next billing cycle.  -_- lol

Is it? what the heck am I thinking of, then? It's an island near my aunt's place near Sarasota....let me go look at a map.....be right back.

Okay, I looked at the map....hmm, I guess I was thinking of one of the keys over there...my mistake.

Still learning the state. We have spent time in various places down here, but I am still not completely sure where everything is. lol

hey! Jacksonville is only 4 hours away. If you come down here, let me know!

(checked my map again  :D  it's only 3.5 hours away.) Maps are fun.

Family members have been relocating to warmer climates and sending pictures of the beauteous weather too.

I send them back a picture of my glove with the middle finger up straight in the snow.  :P Usually with the mailbox as a height reference to show how high the snow is this year.

I used to do the same thing to my friend who lives down here. I would tell her how cold it is, how much snow we have, blah blah

and she would send me a text with "oooh, so sorry, I am sitting by the pool right now. Don't you wish you were here? "...so, I would just skype call her and just sit with my face all wrapped up in a scarf and my hat pulled down low, with my woolen-mitted hands holding a sign that said "Screw you!  Love ya, Me".

Now, apparently, I am the jerk who lives  "down here".

Now, if you'll all excuse me....the beach awaits. Love ya. Me.

snow day in Delaware!  We were projected to get a lot more snow than we actually did.  Since it's such a tiny state, it tends to be either the whole state shuts down or is open.  Today it's a state of emergency, and everything is closed.

Winter has always been my favorite season, and I love snow.  I love going outside when it's actually snowing and how everything is so still and quiet.   That always makes me think and reflect  :)

GOTTA LOVE PA:

August 15
Moved to a new home in Pennsylvania . It's so beautiful here.
The lake to the north looks so majestic. I can hardly
wait to see it snow covered. I'm going to love it here.

October 14
Pennsylvania is definitely the most beautiful place on earth. The leaves have turned all the colors and
shades of red and orange. Went for a ride through the park and saw
some deer. They are so graceful. Certainly they are the most
wonderful animals on earth. This must be paradise, I LOVE IT HERE.

November 10
Deer season will start soon. I can't imagine anyone wanting to kill such a gorgeous animal, hope it will
snow soon. I love it here. Those red and orange leaves have covered
my yard. Looks like a magnificent multi-colored carpet. HOW BEAUTIFUL.
Raking and cleaning up the yard will be an opportunity for invigorating
exercise in the cool crisp air.

November 15 -
Ah, more leaves and more exercise.

November 18 -
still more leaves. Guess it's best to
wait until they've all fallen before I rake again.

November 25 -
Finally, all of the trees lost their leaves

and today's final raking it's over for this season. Chiropractor
suggested I use a lawn maintenance service next year. Only four blisters
became infected. Should probably remember to use gloves.

November 30 -
What the H***? Where did all of those leaves come from? A little wind last night and the lawn is covered
again. Oh well, they'll just have to wait until spring.

December 12 -
It snowed last night, FINALLY. Woke up to find
everything blanketed in white. It looks like a postcard. We
went outside and cleaned the snow off the steps and shoveled the
driveway. Had a snowball fight (I won) and when the snowplow came
by and we had to shovel the end of the driveway again. What a beautiful
place. I Love Pennsylvania

December 14 -
More snow last night, I love it. The snowplow
did his trick to the driveway again.
I Love it here.

December 19 -
More snow again last night. Can't get out of the
driveway to get to work. I'm
exhausted from shoveling.  D*** snowplow.

December 22 -
More of that white s*** fell again last night. A s if dealing with the leaves weren't bad enough, now
I've got blisters all over my hands from shoveling, must remember to wear
gloves. I think the snowplow hides around the corner and waits until I'm finished
shoveling the driveway. The a******.

December 25 -
Merry Christmas. More frigging snow. If I ever get

my hands on that s**-of-a-b**** who drives the snowplow. I swear
I'll kill the b*******. Don't know why they don't use more salt on the
roads to melt the d****** ice.

December 27 -
More white s*** last night. Have been inside for
three days except for shoveling out the driveway after that plow goes
through every time. D****** gloves got wet and then froze
on my hands. Doctor said it was just a mild case of
frostbite, disfiguration is probably only temporary. Can't go anywhere,
car is stuck in a mountain of white sh-t. The weatherman says to expect
another 10 inches of the s*** tonight. Do you know how many shovels full
of snow 10 inches is?

December 28 -
The d****** weatherman was wrong. We got 34 inches of that white s***. A t this rate it won't melt 'till summer. The
plow got stuck up the road and the b****** came to the door
and asked to borrow a shovel. After I told him I'd already broken
six of them shoveling all the s*** he pushed into the driveway, I
broke my last one on his d*** head.

January 4 -
Finally got out of the house today. Went to the store to get food and on the way back I hit a damned deer that
ran in front of my car. Did about $3000 damage d****** beast should
be killed. Wish the hunters had killed them all last November.

May 3 -
Took the car to the garage in town. The thing is rusting out from all the d****** salt they put all
over the roads.

May 10 -
Moved to The Villages in Florida . I can't imagine why anyone in their right mind would ever live in that
God-forsaken state of Pennsylvania

LOL That was great!  But if it was for Calgary, in October the snow would have started falling and the leaves would have frozen onto the tress only to eventually fall off sometime in November on TOP of the snow. And May? there's no guarantee that the snow would be gone, and there would be gravel all over the roads along with the salt - spring is "fix your windshield chips" season.

It's warming up here!  Today is supposed to get to 1C!  1C!!  Just a week ago we were having highes in the minus twenties with a windchill, today is 1C, and Sunday is supposed to be +16C. That's a difference in temperature of over 40C in just a week's time!!  LOL Crazy!

Our icy potholes will be impressive after this weekend.   ;)

Hmph!

First day of Spring - it snowed. Second day - it snowed. Third day - it snowed. Fourth day - more snow. Sigh.  It's warmed up to -8C now. Hubby and the boys couldn't take it anymore so they went to the indoor pool at the rec centre. LOL

I wouldn't mind the moisture so much if the ground was thawed out and it could actually soak in... and be useful. I swear I've gone through a gallon of windshield wiper fluid in the last couple of weeks... On the bright side, it's too cold to splash all over the car right now.

Only two more months until the last frost....

You must be East of here (the Dakotas). We had snow Sunday night, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. But I'm happy to tell you the SUN is out today!!! And it's supposed to warm up to the 50's by tomorrow!!

So hang on, it's coming. (<- Hopeful words from the Land of Eternal Winter.)

Snowed again last night - this is sickening!  We have had snow on the ground continuously since November 1.  However, it has reached -1C this afternoon and the sun is shining.  It could be worse!  ;)

@Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed. Interesting Reading: Clinical trial: B vitamins improve health in patients with coeliac disease living on a gluten-free diet https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19154566/ Safety and effectiveness of vitamin D mega-dose: A systematic review https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34857184/ High dose dietary vitamin D allocates surplus calories to muscle and growth instead of fat via modulation of myostatin and leptin signaling https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38766160/ Safety of High-Dose Vitamin D Supplementation: Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31746327/ Vitamins and Celiac Disease: Beyond Vitamin D https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11857425/ Investigating the therapeutic potential of tryptophan and vitamin A in modulating immune responses in celiac disease: an experimental study https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40178602/ Investigating the Impact of Vitamin A and Amino Acids on Immune Responses in Celiac Disease Patients https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10814138/

Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!
    • knitty kitty
Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?
    • Scott Adams
I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
