Does Everyone Throw Up When Glutened?

Hi Everyone,

I am very embarrassed to ask this question, but I know this is the best place to ask embarrassing Celiac question, so thanks in advance.

I have read lots of post about people throwing up violently when glutened. Does this happen to everyone?

I have a huge fear about this. The last time I threw up was about 20 years ago from what I believe was alcohol poisoning. Before that, maybe three times that I can remember as a child when I was sick. I spent years nauseous and feeling like I was on the verge of throwing up, but never did. So throwing up is a foreign idea to me and actually quite a scary thought.

I just had my first obvious glutening a week ago. I have been home cooking and feeling great, but was in a hurry and ate a Amy's "gluten free" Cheese Enchilada Meal. I have read about lots of people reacting to Amy's and now I really believe it. I had D and was really nauseous and felt overfull and like I was going to throw up for a few days just from whatever trace amounts were in that meal. I am guessing reactions vary from time to time depending on the amount of contamination. So, does everyone throw up at some point from a accidental glutening?

Thanks! (and sorry for the unpleasant subject matter)

No apologies needed...this is a very valid concern.

The answer to your question is no.  Everyone's reaction is slightly different and each individual's reactions can change over time or depending on type of exposure.  There are simply no set rules.

If you think or know you've accidentally encountered gluten....digestive enzymes, activated charcoal and herbal teas can help.

Always LOTS of water along with as much rest as is needed.

Like Lisa said, it depends on the individual. I have never vomited from gluten - ever. Only pregnancy does that to me. Lol

me too...ugh...and not just morning...7/24 for five months...then I felt great!

I had not reacted by vomiting...until some reaction this past week!  Vomiting (Poisonous items) is actually a good sign that your body is behaving properly!  You know what I mean, it gets rid of the poison?

Thanks so much for the replies and the helpful tips.

I'm glad to hear it doesn't happen to everyone. I'm guessing if it does happen, that it won't be as horrible as I am making it out to be in my head. I understand what you mean about it getting rid of the poison, 1desperateladysaved. There have been so many times before my diagnosis where I probably would have felt much better if I had thrown up. I can see how if I have a bad accidental glutening that it could provide some relief in the long run. Sorry to hear you had that bad reaction this past week.

It sounds like you have emetophobia. It is actually the fifth most common phobia, and I am an emetophobe too!

The sheer thought of vomiting terrifies me because it is, like you said, a pretty foreign concept to me, too. I wasn't very sick as a child, maybe only a handful of times, and as an adult I've only ever thrown up once from, like you said, possible alcohol poisoning (if not, very close to the brink of it...we don't talk about those lost years).

I experience nausea, but never actually throwing up from gluten.  The best advice I can offer is to stay calm, breathe deeply, and know that if you are to experience it, it is a very common, and 100% natural process. The body knows what it's doing! :hugs:

Wow! There is actually a name for the phobia and it's common. I never would have guessed that.

I'm glad to hear you don't throw up from gluten GluFree4Me. I was starting to think it was just part of the process for everyone when they get glutened.

I did learn from my minor glutening last week that I should not eat a regular sized meal for a few days after. I had a decent sized lunch on day two and that was a big mistake. I really came close to getting sick from that. I will definitely eat small meals for a few days after a accidental gluten exposure from now on. Thanks for the advice.

Daura Damm (a sponsor here) uses AN-PEP enzymes and filtering in their brewing process to reduce/remove gluten, and it actually tests below 10ppm (I've see a document where they claim 5ppm).

This topic has come up before on this forum and has been researched. No GMO wheat, barley and rye are commercially available in the USA. Any modifications are from hybridization, not laboratory genetic modification. Better toleration of wheat, barley and rye products in other countries is thought to be due to use of heirloom varieties of these cereal grains as opposed to the hybrids used in the USA which contain much larger amounts of gluten.

Welcome to the forum @Ceekay! If you have celiac disease then you can't eat wheat in other countries because it would still contain gliadin, the harmful part of the grain. Have you been diagnosed with celiac disease?

I can eat wheat products safely and without discomfort when traveling to Mexico, Outer Mongolia, and Japan. I feel that US wheat, barley, and rye are grown from genetically-modified seeds that have had something unhealthy done to them, that causes a bad reaction in many of us.

I think all barley and barley malt  have gluten. I would avoid it. The only gluten-free beer I've tried that tastes good is by Holidaily, a Colorado brewery. Their Fat Randy's IPA is great, except that it's almost impossible to find and grocers won't order it (they're at the mercy of their "food distributors," who seem to hate Holidaily). If you can find any Holidaily, try it--it's great. Never mind Spain -;)
