Eye Problems?

So, I've been gluten free for many years and I am very strict about it.

Recently--for the past month I'm guessing--I've been having trouble with blurry vision, eye pain, and strain headaches.

This was a pre-celiac symptom every single night that went away slowly when my diet changed. I used to have this problem every night, but now I only have it like once a month or so.

My last known glutening was a minor exposure about two weeks ago. We aren't sure what it was exactly, but I had, about 12-24 hrs later, crushing depression that lasted a single day, and then vision troubles, headaches, and acid reflux that's still lingering.

Does anyone else have this eye problem? Yesterday I was fine; day before yesterday I had to leave work early because I couldn't read anymore. I don't want to have to leave work early today by losing my vision!!

Is this a symptom of glutening for anyone else? is it a sign of another sensitivity? vitamin deficiency? why would it happen some days and not others? my computer usage, amount of time spent on my cell phone, and amount of time spent reading small print & books remains unchanged between days where I have blurry vision and days where I don't.

Hi Strawberry!  It's been awhile since we have heard from you.  I hope things are going well but for this eye problem.......

Do your eyes feel overly dry?  Do you have mouth dryness?  I ask because Sjogren's Syndrome is common with Celiac and it can cause vision problems and eye pain.  I have Sjogren's myself so thought I would start there.  I don't mean a little dryness......Sjogren's will give you extreme dryness.  Do you have more dental problems than usual?  That's another symptom of Sjogren's, as it applies to your mouth.

How is your thyroid? Feeling hot, muscle fatigue? Wacky vision, muscles aching around eyes, were an indication that I was running hyper. Then I would run hypo and the vision issues would go away and hypo symptoms would emerge.

I got diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome recently.  The reason I went to the eye doctor was that I had blurred vision and I was afraid that I was losing my eyesight.  She said that we tear up more with dry eyes and that was what caused the blurring.  At that time I was suffering from a relatively long term accidental gluten ingestion period.  Later, when I got my diet under control again, the symptoms went away.  I hadn't started taking the prescribed medication yet because I was waiting to get over the glutening first.  I don't like adding anything when I am glutened because then I might not notice if it causes problems.  I ended up not taking it since the symptoms went away on their own.  Since then I do notice them coming back again if I have a long accidental gluten ingestion period.

Things are actually going really well, otherwise!

My mouth and eyes don't feel *dry* really. And my mouth is fine, other than the occasional canker sore (which I cure with probiotics, and sensitive teeth.

I've had my thyroid tested in the past, and it was always normal, altho' I couldn't tell you any more than that. I do have muscle fatigue but my general fatigue levels have gone way, way down since I got my diagnosis of dysthymia (chronic, low-grade depression) and have been treating that. I will have muscle fatigue and pain on occasion, however. It seems a little random. It used to be daily.

I didn't know you could go back and forth between hyper- and hypothyroid. I should look into that.

Wheatwacked, are you speaking of the use of potassium bromide and and azodicarbonamide as dough modifiers being controlling factor for what? Do you refer to celiac reactions to gluten or thyroid disease, kidney disease, GI cancers?

Excess iodine supplements can cause significant health issues, primarily disrupting thyroid function. My daughter has issues with even small amounts of dietary iodine. While iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production, consistently consuming amounts far above the tolerable upper limit (1,100 mcg/day for adults) from high-dose supplements can trigger both hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, worsen autoimmune thyroid diseases like Hashimoto's, and lead to goiter. Other side effects include gastrointestinal distress. The risk is highest for individuals with pre-existing thyroid conditions, and while dietary iodine rarely reaches toxic levels, unsupervised high-dose supplementation is dangerous and should only be undertaken with medical guidance to avoid serious complications. It's best to check with your doctor before supplementing iodine.

In Europe they have banned several dough modifiers potassium bromide and and azodicarbonamide.  Both linked to cancers.  Studies have linked potassium bromide to kidney, thyroid, and gastrointestinal cancers.  A ban on it in goes into effect in California in 2027. I suspect this, more than a specific strain of wheat to be controlling factor.  Sourdough natural fermentation conditions the dough without chemicals. Iodine was used in the US as a dough modifier until the 1970s. Since then iodine intake in the US dropped 50%.  Iodine is essential for thyroid hormones.  Thyroid hormone use for hypothyroidism has doubled in the United States from 1997 to 2016.   Clinical Thyroidology® for the Public In the UK, incidently, prescriptions for the thyroid hormone levothyroxine have increased by more than 12 million in a decade.  The Royal Pharmaceutical Society's official journal Standard thyroid tests will not show insufficient iodine intake.  Iodine 24 Hour Urine Test measures iodine excretion over a full day to evaluate iodine status and thyroid health. 75 year old male.  I tried adding seaweed into my diet and did get improvement in healing, muscle tone, skin; but in was not enough and I could not sustain it in my diet at the level intake I needed.  So I supplement 600 mcg Liquid Iodine (RDA 150 to 1000 mcg) per day.  It has turbocharged my recovery from 63 years of undiagnosed celiac disease.  Improvement in healing a non-healing sebaceous cyst. brain fog, vision, hair, skin, nails. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis celiac disease experience exacerbation of the rash with iodine. The Wolff-Chaikoff Effect Crying Wolf?

same! how amazing you have a friend who has celiac disease. i find myself wishing i had someone to talk about it with other than my partner (who has been so supportive regardless)

They don’t give a sample size (serving size is different from sample size) so it is hard to tell just what the result means.  However, the way the result is presented  does look like it is below the limit of what their test can measure, so that is good.
