Thyroid Medictaions? Levoxyl?

Hi everyone!

It's been a while since I've been on here. Just a little background info on me..I've been strictly gluten-free for 6 years now and feeling really great on the diet, but now all the sudden my celiac symptoms have returned in the last six weeks. I have a gluten free kitchen.. but the only gluten I have is the cat and fish food, but I wash my hands right after all the time.. I have acid reflux, feeling tired, brain fog, sore throat, having a pain on my left side under my rib cage and I lost 10 pounds in the last month. I am really slender and now I'm down to 103, so the weight loss is a little scary for me. I now started Boost to try to gain some weight back and I'm only maintaining.. The only thing I changed in my diet is I added Almonds by the company Wonderful. I started them about 6 weeks ago. I eat mostly whole foods, too. I am really sensitive so I know my limits on gluten free processed foods. I don't eat many at all. I did call the Almond company, Wonderful, and they said there is no chance of CC. I'm not sure if I believe them though.. I did stop eating them about 2 weeks ago. I feel a little better but still not 100%. I feel like I just got glutened again two days ago on steak that I make all the time.. ugh..  I stopped all my vitamins about two weeks ago too just in case. I take Kirkman Labs and I've been taking them for the last four years without issues. So I have a lot of trust in that company.

So now the only thing I'm questioning is my thyroid medication. I am currently taking Levothyroxine by Lannett and I've been taking them for two years without issues. They say they are gluten free, but of course don't test for gluten. I know it seems highly unlikely since I've been taking them for two years without a reaction, but this is the only thing I can think of that I may be getting CC. I eat mostly whole foods and I stopped everything else.

So my question is what thyroid medications are everyone taking? I called my endo doctor and told them the situation and they're going to call in Levoxyl made by Pfizer for me just to try and see if my gluten reactions go away. I was on Levoxyl before and didn't have problems with it, but it's always a little nerve racking to change these meds, especially when you have to take them everyday. Is anyone currently taking Levoxyl without any problems?

Thanks so much for your help everyone!

P.S. Sorry about my typo in Medication.. This is my brain fog kicking in... LOL..

Hi Lisa,

I've been on Levoxyl since March. My Dr wanted to put me on a name brand since the pharmacies switch up generics and there are sometimes variations in the amount of medication between name brand and generic. Interestingly I was on 100 mcg of the generic and then switched to Levoxyl 100. Ended up hypo. It was awful. Switched me to Levoxyl 112 and ended up hyper. Urgh. So now I'm on 112 Monday thru Saturday and half a pill on Sunday which I guess is about 104 mcg. I do feel better. Have only been on this dose for about 2 weeks though. I have not had any gluten type reactions.

Thanks Mamaw! :) I know that list isn't always up to date, so that's why I'm asking here.. I actually got glutened from a couple meds on that list. :(

My sister (who at least as far as we know does not have Celiac) was on a thyroid med and was doing fine on it, and then out of the blue she started having all kinds of horrible reactions to dairy. Two docs have told her that they think the manufacturer changed something in the formulation that damaged her gut and caused her problems. She got off of it, and has been gradually recovering.

I am on Levoxyl and Cytomel cuz King Pharm sent me letters in 2010 declaring that neither of them uses gluten fillers. (King is now owned by Pfizer.). Have never been glutened by these meds so far as I can tell.

Hi Tigercat.  Have you considered it is not a food or medication issue at all?  Have you had your thyroid blood test done recently to see if it's the thyroid and not the medication?  Have you told your Doctor about your symptoms without putting a Celiac slant on it?  Look at the symptoms as a whole and take Celiac out of the question.  You may be ill with something else entirely.

Hi Colleen,

Thanks for responding. Yes, I did role out hypo and hyperthyroidism. I just got my blood work done last week and my thyroid levels are right where the doctors want them to be. I did just call my GI doctor and they are going to order me blood work to get my antibodies checked. My antibodies have been at 11 for the last five years so if they are back up then I know for sure I'm getting gluten in my system, but really... I don't even need the blood work. I've been gluten free for almost seven years and feeling great on a very strict gluten-free diet. I know these are my gluten reactions. :(

Thanks for responding everyone! Well it looks like I'll be changing to Levoxly today. So we'll see if my reactions go away ... I'll keep you all posted. ..

Thanks. Since the back and forth and promises of review and general stalling went on for more than six months, the credit company will no longer investigate. They have a cutoff of maybe six months.

Is this the same restaurant? https://www.facebook.com/TheHappyTartFallsChurch/ Is it too late to take this up with your credit card company? Normally you have a few months to do a chargeback with them. It seems very odd that they are taking this approach with someone who is likely to be a regular customer--not a good business-minded way of handling things!

Many people with celiac disease, especially those who are in the 0-2 year range of their recovery, have additional food intolerance issues which could be temporary. To figure this out you may need to keep a food diary and do an elimination diet over a few months. Some common food intolerance issues are dairy/casein, eggs, corn, oats, and soy. The good news is that after your gut heals (for most people who are 100% gluten-free this will take several months to two years) you may be able to slowly add some these items back into your diet after the damaged villi heal. This article may be helpful: The most common nutrient deficiencies associated with celiac disease that may lead to testing for the condition include iron, vitamin D, folate (vitamin B9), vitamin B12, calcium, zinc, and magnesium.  Unfortunately many doctors, including my own doctor at the time, don't do extensive follow up testing for a broad range of nutrient deficiencies, nor recommend that those just diagnosed with celiac disease take a broad spectrum vitamin/mineral supplement, which would greatly benefit most, if not all, newly diagnosed celiacs. Because of this it took me decades to overcome a few long-standing issues I had that were associated with gluten ataxia, for example numbness and tingling in my feet, and muscle knots--especially in my shoulders an neck. Only long term extensive supplementation has helped me to resolve these issues.

Welcome to the forum. Is the nausea associated with eating certain foods, or anything else in particular?  Many people with celiac disease, especially those who are in the 0-2 year range of their recovery, have additional food intolerance issues which could be temporary. To figure this out you may need to keep a food diary and do an elimination diet over a few months. Absolutely my point with Kerrigan, the owner. She stood to secure many years of faithful patronage by simply inviting us in for a pastry or lunch. Or by simply producing another $50 e-card based on trust. We would have been highly satisfied. We are limited to a few restaurants in the area, and that would have been one. It was very disappointing, esp to my wife, to realize we can't patronize the place anymore.
