Annatto

I'm very careful with my diet and have had very few gluten problems, but I've found that when I eat ice cream that contains annatto I have a reaction that is exactly what happens when I eat gluten. I never have a problem with ice cream that doesn't contain gluten. I've had this happen with both Breyer's and Edy's (Edy's web site says the flavor I ate is gluten-free).

I've searched the archives and see only a couple of references to problems with annatto. Does anyone know for sure if this is related to celiac disease?

Search the site index and the forbidden/safe food lists. I think that they used to mention gluten may be used in annatto processing......

Good luck with your search!

bluelotus Contributor

Sorry, did the search and didn't see it. Let me check some old files and get back with you.....

I apologize, I may have misspoke. The list I have here says annatto is safe for celiacs, but I swear I remember reading that gluten may be used in its processing. This would have been a year ago that I saw it..... Sorry for all the confusion, but it appears, based on what's listed now, annatto is safe. Let me know if you find any other information. I really don't think I'm going crazy, but I guess its always possible.

Once upon a time somebody, I think it was the CSA, claimed that people with celiac should avoid annatto. This was based on nothing at all. Annatto is without question gluten-free. However, there do seem to be some people who disagree with annatto.

I met with a celiac nurse this week who mentioned steering clear of annatto. She mentioned it can irritate Celiacs who are still healing... That's all I can think of on it....

When I was on the gluten free diet for the first year, I was reacting to annatto! I have since been able to tolerate it.

Thanks for replies. I've only been gluten-free for less than a year, so I hope you're right about getting less sensitive to annatto. I did see some previous posts in the archives and it certainly looks like this isn't a widespread problem among celiacs. I guess I'll just stay away from it for a while and then try it again in a year or so.

When I was first diagnosed they told me to stop annatto before I was 6 and then be able to have it until I was 60, it is something about the way that your body can process it, especially when you are still healing, try staying off it for a year or two, and then when you are completely healed, try going back slowly.

I have trouble with nausea. It often starts when I’m anxious about something (home repairs, sick dog) but continues long after the home is repaired or the dog is healthy again. When it happens I eat less and lose weight.  My gastroenterologist suggested ginger or peppermint tea. I don’t know if that will work or not because I haven't had the problem since she suggested it.

Hello  I'm not sure what to think . Seems no matter what I do I get sick. I had some yogurt with only 2 grams of sugar and is labeled gluten free ...the strawberry version seemed to really set me off My jaw is burning as well as my stomach and my feet.  Horrible pain..plus acid reflux and nausea... sensitivity to touch pain. ..yikes !! I don't know if it's from the lactose in the yogurt or if I'm getting an ulcer  This condition can make you question yourself quite a bit.  Then if you are not sure the anxiety comes 😞 Does any of these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? The neuropathy is quite intense.  What do you eat or drink after this happens  Open to suggestions  Thank you

Of course my son is on a 100% gluten free diet.  I wish his symptoms were not debilitating as there are right now.  He cannot work, even when a miniscule of cross contamination occurs.  It's not just GI distress, but intense fatigue, brain fog, depression, anxiety, insomnia, etc.  It's literally neurological inflammation.  Not to be taken lightly here.  We have sought out many other possible ways to cope during this window of time (8 months!!!!)  without success.   AN-PEP does not help and seems like studies on this are not well researched.  So, we are trying this out because research shows some promising results.  And, all participants showed no cravings afterwards, no signs of addiction.  The patch is different than the oral route such as smoking, vaping, gum, pouch, etc.

Have you tried AN-PEP enzymes, for example, GlutenX (who is a sponsor here)? A lot of research has shown that it can break down small amounts of gluten in the stomach, before it reaches the intestines. It might be a better approach than risking nicotine addiction, and the questionable research around this. I also hope that he’s trying to be 100% Gluten-Free.

Hi all  I was diagnosed Coeliac a few years ago and follow a gluten free diet. The list of foods that I can eat without a problem grows shorter on a weekly basis. [I also have diabetes and asthma also].  BUT the reason I am posting this is because I seem to struggle with nausea quite a lot, which is really quite debilitating, and I was wondering if others suffer from nausea, even if following a gluten free diet.
