Less Symptoms When Pregnant?

I am just starting to figure out this whole Celiac thing, and may have had it for YEARS before now, but I have always felt great during all of my pregnancies. I am wondering if that is normal for a celiac to feel better during pregnancy??? I have always eaten a fairly low gluten diet without even realizing it, and when pregnant I always craved (more than usual) weird things like watermelon or grilled chicken or cucumbers, not your normal prego cravings......(I did like my Wendy's frosty's and snickers bars though too!!!) And I am just wondering if it is all linked somehow?????

I've been diagnosed with some form of RA/AS since my 2nd preg., and all my symptoms seemed to go into "remission" during preg. I did have a very strange rash this last preg which my RA doc and dermatologist couldn't figure out, but now I think it was the celiac rash thing, fits that description perfectly.

I am still waiting for my blood test results, so I am not 100% certain of celiacs, but I feel pretty confident that this is it. SO, anyone else feel better while preg??

Jen

Yep. I felt great pregnant. Gained weight like it was going out of style, without changing my eating habits. If anything I was eating less.

That's the other thing, I always gained a TON of weight, 45 lbs at least and I always watched what I ate while pregnant, could never figure out WHY I was gaining so much. By the time #4 came along, I just told my new OB to leave me alone about the weight gain, I would gain a ton in the 1st and 2nd trimesters and then slack off in the 3rd and I always lost all the weight so I stopped worrying about it.

I am just amazed at all the things in the past that have baffled me and the docs, and are making sense with Celiacs, if my blood tests come back normal I am going to just loose it, this HAS to be it!!!

I was pretty much symptom free with both pregnancies. My experience afterwards was not. My symptoms got a lot worse after last pregnancy, common for us that are undiagnosed. I also gained alot of weight, the only time in my life I could. I gained 45 with the first and 60 with the second. Quite a bit on a 98 lb maximum body but I finally had boobs. I would not have eaten gluten though, even if it caused no symptoms, if I had known I was celiac.

I felt soooooooooo sick for the entire pregnancy with all five children, and gained an enormous amount of weight with each of them (35 to 45 lb), and was never able to lose all of it again. When you add eight miscarriages (doubtlessly caused by Celiac), I was either pregnant, breastfeeding or just had a miscarriage for the first 16 years of marriage (my youngest is 14, and I had the last miscarriage on her third birthday, after which I gave up on having more kids). Since my youngest is six years younger than the next one, I just wanted one kid close to her. But it wasn't possible, because I didn't know about celiac disease. And I've never been able to lose all (or I should say, most ) of the weight (I was a toothpick before my first pregnancy).

I used to be too skinny (sticklegs when a kid, my mother always tried to fatten me up, of course with milk and flour!), and starting with the first pregnancy, I was always overweight. These past five years I kept gaining and gaining, which was very depressing. Now I am finally losing weight! :)

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
