Scotch whiskey - glutened??

Hi all,

I have been gluten free for around 2months now after being diagnosed with celiac disease. I think I may have just been glutened - I had a sip of Chevas Regal Blended Scotch Whiskey while catching up with some old friends. For some reason my brain was switched off and I wasn't even thinking about gluten despite being so meticulous when it comes to my food.  I don't normally drink.... 

 

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge on this particular drink?

According to information I was supplied with when I was first diagnosed, the gluten in whiskey is removed in the distilling process, so it shouldn't be a problem.  Is it possible you could have been contaminated from something else?

Distilling removes the gluten.  At least that is what the literature says.  But I know some folks who stick to things like potato vodka to be on the safe side.  I have never had any glutening issues with bourbons.

Any alcohol can be hard on your gut when you are still healing.  Two months into the gluten-free diet might not be long enough for you to handle alcohol.  I do not think you were glutened.  No worries about the about the whiskey, but I would worry about a dirty old bar glass that has been washed and dunked in rinse water by hand.  I ask for a glass ran through the dishwasher or a to-go cup.  A crowded bar on a Saturday night, ugh!  I worked as a bar maid in college.  Corners are cut when it is super busy.  Dunking glasses may get rid of germs, but not gluten from beer.

      I'm not saying that some celiacs won't need it, but it should be done under a doctor's supervision because it can cause lots of problems in some people.

      I also noticed I get debilitating migraines when I smell gluten, wheat and its not taken seriously when it affects one in every way.Im still begging to properly be heard.I also noticed tolerance level is down the drain with age and life changes. I have been told by incompetent medical that im not celiac or that sensitive. Diagnosed in 1994 by gi biopsy gluten-free ever since along with other lovely food allergies. Prayers

      trents:  Why some can tolerate european bread but not american bread.     I take 600 mcg a day.  Right in the middle of the safe range.   Groups at Risk of Iodine Inadequacy Though though the NIH does not specifically list Celiac Disease in this group, they state: "Iodide is quickly and almost completely absorbed in the stomach and duodenum. Iodate is reduced in the gastrointestinal tract and absorbed as iodide [2,5]."  That would certainly include malabsorption of Iodine due to Celiac Disease with resultant Iodine Deficiency.       Wheatwacked, are you speaking of the use of potassium bromide and and azodicarbonamide as dough modifiers being controlling factor for what? Do you refer to celiac reactions to gluten or thyroid disease, kidney disease, GI cancers?
