caution: good belly juice NOT gluten-free.

I just stopped eating gluten about 6 weeks ago and I'm still having some odd symptoms. One being that I have difficulty taking deep breaths although my oxygen level is fine. I believe this has to do with my system being backed up from the change in diet.  so this morning I decide to go on a liquid diet for a couple of days and made myself a juice smoothie with my boyfriend's ingredients in the house. I mixed two different kinds of juices, a little bit of gluten free Whey protein mix, and some blackberries.  it was a different kind of protein mix than he normally has so I carefully reviewed the package to find the words gluten free. It was quite good and I felt healthy. Until I started to feel slightly dizzy and weird.

Wouldn't you freaking know that good belly probiotic juice has barley malt in it?

The only reason I added it to the pomegranate juice was I was thinking "Oh good it's a probiotic, how helpful"!

Just a thought, but maybe the mixture was high in sugar. If you have a lot of sugar, no matter what the source of it was, it can make your blood glucose skyrocket. You said you only added a little whey protein mix, maybe by adding a bit more or just adding some yogurt to the mix, it would have slowed down how quickly your body processed the juice.

If you can't/don't eat gluten for what ever reason, your body processes your foods at a different speed to those who can/do eat gluten.  Also, have you ever had a glucose tolerance test? (This is how they find out if you have diabetes).

Do we process slower than the gluten eaters?  Just wondering and learning from you all.

Yes. My glucose test was normal. I did however, 4 hours later, ask my boss about FMLA (as a joke) because I look pregnant.

Any suggestions on how to get the bloat down? Or what to eat to make it not bloat more?

Yes!   When I was being diagnosed the traditional "clean out" time  for a colonoscopy prep did not work for me due to small intestinal damage.   I originally just went in for a routine colonoscopy and during the consult the GI suggested an endoscopy and celiac testing due to anemia.   Now, I will be required to do twice the clean out procedures!  I am dreading it. I will starve!  But that will not occur  for 7 more years.   Plus, my intestines should be healed ....but ya never know, so I will have to play it safe.  Look out jello and chicken broth!  By the way, my colon was just fine.

Was that certified gluten-free whey protein?  Did you contact the manufacturer and inquire about their manufacturing practices (e.g. Dedicated line?)  I am confused.  Did the label actually say gluten free and yet it barley in it?

ironictruth Proficient

No. The irony, and I laughed at myself, is that the whey protein mix was fine. I checked the packaging more then once.

When I started to feel funny I then checked the probiotic juice (go figure, I put it in my smoothie for the gut healing effects) and THAT had barley malt in it. Juice out of all things...yummy stuff. Called Good Belly. But watch out!

I think it is more likely to be the opposite.  I have diabetes as well as coeliac disease and due to my diet I find that I get glucose lows quite a bit and need to test my glucose before driving, to make sure it doesn't go too low.  However, this might not be the same for everyone, but it is something to take into consideration,  for exampleI personally cannot tolerate dairy produce, and dairy can slow down the rate of absorption.

I'm confused. You had barley malt in your probiotic juice? You must not have barley malt on a gluten free diet, this would not make it a gluten free diet. Sorry if I've misunderstood you.

Yes, I know. I am new to this. It was my boyfriend's juice, not something I buy.

In a million years I would not have expected the damn juice.

Ha!  I was thinking digestive time -- not blood sugar!

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.
