Burning pain in stomach - normal biopsy

I just wondered if anyone else suffers from burning pain in their stomach, just to the left of my sternum, when stressed and when hungry.  Normally when I relax the pain goes and I rarely have difficulties with it at night.  I've recently had a normal biopsy with no sign of active celiac disease, gastritis or ulcer.  A normal ultrasound of my abdomen too.

This all started around a year ago when I was being cc'd.  My gastro says I should take zantac or similar as it will help but it doesn't seem to.

It has been a very stressful few months and I'm hoping things will settle when things calm down a bit.  The only thing I can find on line that sounds like what I have is non-ulcer-dyspepsia.   I also have been diagnosed with costochondritis and the two seem to overlap.

If anyone has been through this and can share some tips I'd love to hear from them.

Thanks!

I get that hunger pain in my back, usually between the right shoulder blade and backbone. At first I thought heart disease, because it is very painful and in the right area, but goes away when I eat the right food.

If food doesn't help quick enough I take Alka-Selzer (aspirin and bicarbonate) and that almost always works. Zantac and Pepcid are H pump inhibitors designed to reduce your stomach acid long term, which if not necessary will interfere with your digestive process leading to more malnutrition. And down the rabbit hole you go. They have recently been linked to kidney failure as an underreported side effect. Lawsuits have been initiated.

Thanks, Wheatwacked.  I think you are right to be careful about the long term use of inhibitors for this type of issue.  I think sometimes, when used judiciously in short term, they can nip something in the bud before it gets worse, though.

Interestingly a friend of mine with wheat intolerance and gastritis has recently been told that there is move in mainland Europe to deal with these issues with diet and remedies such as slippery elm and Maalox.

I've had variations of this particular burning pain on and off for four years now.   When I had it in my left lower gut I gave up dairy for a bit and it went.  My celiac doctor called that IBS, on top of celiac.

I wonder if it is possible to get IBS in one's stomach?  It does feel as if my nerves have become over-senstive in that region.  Anything tight across the offending area makes it much worse.   At least the pain levels off once I rest.

I've just had my latest TTG results back and they are at 40.  It has taken me five years to get down to this level.  At least the figures are still going down but why so long..?

I keep thinking if I had this pain and went to my docs and they took blood tests they would blame it on celiac and tell me to give up gluten!  Been there, done that.  Of course I could have gastritis again which has flared since my last endoscopy.

I find all this guessing quite hard work!

The last time I tried to buy Maalox, at several different stores I thought it had been discontinued. I went to the doctor with lower back pain. He ran a lipid panel and my triglycerides were over 10,000. I was admitted to the hospital, Acute Pancreatitis, nothing by mouth, not even ice chips, on IV Dextrose for a week. The plan was to give my guts a total break and hope I survive. Assuming you do not have pancreatitis, try eating only foods that make your tummy happy. Also don't allow yourself to get over hungry, that is one of my triggers for the scapula area pain. Cream of Rice is my good friend. Sometimes I add Hershey's Syrup, but I prefer it plain, around room temperature. Very soothing. Romain lettuce everyday helps.

Ensure has 25% of your daily nutritional need in each bottle. Walgreen's branded value pack was $16 for 16 bottles.

I take 500mg a day of Graviola. After a few days of looseness, it seems to help regulate peristalsis for me.

Some days really suck, other days are getting better. You are undoing the damage caused by eating a poison to your body for most of your life. Make sure you are getting more than the minimum RDA essentials.

Dr. Amy Meyers might be a good resource, she seems to specialize in Lupus but GFD is a core value.

I hope you feel better tomorrow.

Daughter has started gluten free diet this week as per gastroenterologists suggestion. However says she feels more tired and like she’s been hit by a train. I suggested it could be the change to gluten free or just stress from the endoscopy last week catching up with her. Just wondering if feeling more tired is a normal reaction at this stage. I suppose it’s possible some gluten might have been present without realising. Have tried to reassure her it’s not going to resolve symptoms overnight

Looking for help sourcing gluten-free products that do not contain potato or corn derived ingredients. I have other autoimmune conditions (Psoriatic Arthritis and Sjogrens) so I’m looking for prepared foods as I have fatigue and cannot devote a lot of time to baking my own treats.

I am so sorry you're going through this. It's completely understandable to feel frustrated, stressed, and disregarded after such a long and difficult health journey. It's exhausting to constantly advocate for yourself, especially when you're dealing with so many symptoms and positive diagnoses like SIBO, while still feeling unwell. The fact that you have been diligently following the diet without relief is a clear sign that something else is going on, and your doctors should be investigating other causes or complications, not dismissing your very real suffering.

It is just so sad that health care in the United States has come to this.  Health insurance should be available to everyone, not just the healthy or the rich.  My heart goes out to you.  I would not hesitate to have the test and pay for it myself.  My big concern would be how you could keep the results truly private.  I am sure that ultimately, you could not.  A.I. is getting more and more pervasive, and all data is available somewhere.  I don't know if you could give a fake name, or pay for your test with cash.  I certainly would not disclose any positive results on a private insurance application.  As I understand it, for an official diagnosis, an MD needs to review your labs and make the call.  If you end up in the ER, or some other situation, just request a gluten free diet, and say it is because you feel better when you don't eat gluten.      Hang in there, though.  Medicare is not that far away for you, and it will remove a lot of stress from your health care concerns.  You will even be able to "come out of the closet" about being Celiac!

Yes, I've posted a few times about two companies: Request a Test and Ulta Labs. Also, pretty much we can all request any test we want (with the possible exception of the N protein Covid test and I'm sure a couple of others) with Lab Corp (or Pixel by Lab Corp) and Quest. I much prefer Lab Corp for their professionalism, ease of service and having it together administratively, at least in DC. And just so you know, Request a Test uses Lab Corp and Quest anyway, while Ulta Labs uses only Quest. Ulta Labs is cheaper than Request a Test, but I am tired of dealing with Quest, so I don't use them so much.
