Elderberry Syrup. Can we take it?

Hi all! The flu has hit our family and our daughter’s pediatrician suggested elderberry syrup as a wonderful remedy. Tons of people swear by it and I figure it can’t hurt to try it. But then on an FAQ on a health site I read that people with autoimmune disorders should contact their doctor before taking it. I wonder if that’s because it boosts the immune system so much, which could be a negative for some with AI issues. I assume we are fine though, but I wanted to ask your opinions before I take it. My son also has celiac disease so I want to make sure it’s ok before giving it to him.

I would ask our doctors but I suspect you all can answer this question for me.

I bought Sambucol brand, which is gluten free. Just FYI.

Wow!

Imhave never used this.  I did read the warning specifically about side effects and autoimmune disorders.  I would pass just based on that.

But isn’t it the case that, unless we eat gluten, our AI disorder isn’t active. The article lists MS, RA, lupus, but those disorders are different than celiac disease in that they are usually managed with medication and there are lots of different triggers.

If your pediatrician recommended it, it should be safe for you as long as it does not contain gluten.  If you would like, confirm with your GI.

I am sorry.   I just gave you my personal opinion and I have more than one autoimmune condition  and I am trying to avoid more.

You don’t need to apologize. I was just asking because I find this all really confusing.

I know people with Celiac who use it.

I agree with @trents and wiping down the spot you eat your lunch, and eating the food your brought from home should be safe for even sensitive celiacs. Gluten can jump on your food, so it would likely better better for you to continue eating where you prefer.

I would think that as long as you keep your food on a wrapper or on a paper plate you would not be at risk for cross contamination. You may be overthinking it all which is common for those in the first year of the celiac journey. But let me ask you. Are you feeling self-conscious about having a celiac diagnosis? I notice the term "isolated" in your thread title. Do you fear being shunned? I offer this video clip for your consideration:

I’m worried about cross contamination, as people don’t clear up properly. I take my own lunch in a packed lunch box with my own cutlery, plate etc and wash it all at home everyday rather than using the schools communal options. There is always crumbs or food left out for us to share on tables etc.

Welcome to the forum, @Tanya177! Help us understand why you don't eat with the other staff members at the present time. I'm assuming you already pack your own lunch rather than eating school cafeteria food. Surely there are other staffers who bring their own lunches. How would this be different if you did not have celiac disease?
