First time here and im trying to find a solution to my problems. I was diagnosed with Celiacs 2 years ago and the doctor gave me Acid folic and a med called belladonna.

6 months ago i got divorced and my belly started to act up. now i have lost the house, car all my assets and my job , health insurance and so on due to an evil ex wife. It feels like the celiacs has become so much worse to the point where i have lost over 80 lbs and now eat one banana a day.

I have been to the ER and they told me everything was in my head so i did not get any help. Have been there 2 times and the same story.

What can i do to settle down the stomach ? Anytips.. I cant visit my Dr because of the insurance so the only way is to try to do it with out the healthcare.

Oh i forgot.. im starting to have a hard time keeping stuff down and nasuated most of the days. diareea and pain out of this world... Its from the stomach where i always have problems when i eat gluten.

I know all my problems otherwise will be ok... but this is freaking me out...

Hi, Sorry about your dilema! Sounds like stress caused a serious flair up. Wondering if you have considered anything like ProBiotics or Sam-E? Maybe something that quells the intestine and your mind may keep you from further flair ups while you begin to heal in both ways. I have also heard ginger is a good remedy for the belly. Somewhere in that horror story there has to be light! Maybe the fact that your actively seeking answers shows your will to overcome and thats a bright light for all of us. Everyday you get through it despite the bricks on your back, is one more day you should be proud of yourself. Among the thorns will come a rose and you'll be able to use that to guide another. I'm sure more than one of us can say our life is far from perfect, welcome! You share good company....

Take care,

Ok been a while since i posted here. I have been in court and lost since i did not have a lawyer and she did. Bunch of other stuff is going on also but i can keep that from you.

Health wise im about the same. Weight is falling of me and im trying to stay away from the gluten. Not easy since i dont have a kitchen and need to go buy most of the food from resturants.

Well.. short update but i would like to let know how i am.

Uh, you lost? Are you free from her legally? Then consider it a win. I hope you don't have to pay alimony or have to deal with her in any way after all this. But you've gained a lot of support here, if that's any consolation. Keep us posted! Have you made a dr's appt yet? Have you written down your medical history and problems and everything in detail for him/her? It really does help them come to an understanding of your situation quicker.

How's the job coming? Inquiring (and nosey) minds want to know. And yes we do have our own lives, but we're pulling for you to come through this.

Couldn't have said it better myself :D .

MS--I had been wondering how you were making out. I hope the job is going good and that your insurance goes into effect soon so you can get to the dr. Are you able to get any more food down? There are so many of us here pulling for you--

Are you maintaining a completely gluten free diet? In your post you stated that "when you eat gluten I always have problems". I say this because my aunt was diagnosed by a doctor who is unknowlegeable about the disease and told it was okay at eat gluten once a week.

The problem is that the damages caused by gluten affect you for more than a day or so. The damage can cause intermittant symptoms (IBS, Lactose Intolerance, Vomiting, etc) but in the BIG scope of things you are damaging the part of your body that absorbs nutrients and you are also damaging your immune system. You must stop eating gluten. I know you are going through hard times, but you need to make it a point to adhere to this becasue unless you do you cannot fix your current situation.

Belladonna is for your upset stomoch. If your doctor gave you a "magic mouthwash" blend, usually belladonna with mylanta and possibly another medicated liquid (benadryl is common), which may or may not contain gluten. Also, as another poster reccommended your hygiene products and vitamins may have it as well. You need to start emailing manufacturers to find out. In the meantime you need to get a b12 injection. Try eating plain rice as well as banannas and applesauce, that might help. Walgreens.com has a list of gluten free products at their stores. Ensure is also gluten free you can try that, but might upset your stomach because it is made with milk.

Have you tried ensure? It's good if you don't have a kitchen and want to put some weight on, unless of course milk bothers you. I have to say it is gentler than milk, I was very lactose intolerant when I first started gluten-free and it didn't bother me.

BERNESES i found pedialyte and im taking that. Seems to stay down. Also got me some multivitamins with non gluten in them so i will see how that work. Trying to drink some more.

Thank you so much for the kind words. I have tried cream of rice a long time ago but i will try this again.

Karen. I have tried potatoes and had the same result , meaning running to the bathroom right away. When i posted here first i had to describe the level of stress in my life to try to see if someone knew how much stress affect celiacs ? Now i understand also that it might be a combination of two diffrent things, and it might not just be what i eat.

Being at the hospital the last time i was so insulted by the Dr. he pretty much told me unless you are dying right now he cant help me. So. What else can i do.. ....

Now for the good news. Currently i'm in a hotel room outside tampa. How??. well i work as an software developer and have a good reputation for making a good job for the poeple i work for, and today the manager of IT could see i did not feel right and started to talk to me. So i told him what was going on and he whent to HR. HR called me in and said "We like you and dont like you to stop working. We have all had hard times in our life and we will help you out" So they put me up in the hotel for 2 nights and gave me a check for $500 that i can cash tommorow. They know my skills as an developer and i preciate that they will keep me around even if the private life is a mess currently.

I can understand why some people think this is a tale from someone. I wish it was, because mentaly it starts to eat me up . The first thingi will do when im back on my feet is to volunteer at the homeless shelter and give them donations. I have had a taste of this and still do and i dont wish this upon any of my enemies.

Back home in Sweden i would have been more "prepared". I think someone mentioned that her husband was Swedish. Well if you ask him what Social kontoret is he will let you know all the help they could have given me. Unfortnelly I dont have the same rights as an citizen then it is not easy. Not much help i can reach for.

Someone asked about health insurance. yes i will get BCBS on 1 st of feb.

Well i will check the forums from work tommorow again and try to let you know whats going on.

YOU NEED TO FIND THE DOCTOR THAT DIAGNOSED YOU. YOU NEED TO FIRST GO TO YOUR HR DEPARTMENT AT WORK AND TELL THEM THAT YOU HAVE AN AUTOIMMUNE ILLNESS AND ASK IF THERE IS A FORM THAT YOU NEED TO FILL OUT TO DOCUMENT IT. GET THE FORM, IF THERE IS NO FORM PROCEED TO THE DOCTOR. HAVE THE DOCTOR FILL OUT DOCUMENTATION THAT YOU HAVE AN AUTOIMMUNE ILLNESS KNOWN AS CELAIC DISEASE. THAT YOU MAY MISS WORK AND THAT YOUR SYMPTOMS ARE INTERMITTANT, SO YOU MIGHT HAVE TO BE LATE AT TIMES OR LEAVE EARLY DUE TO THESE SYMPTOMS.

AUTOIMMUNE ILLNESS FALLS UNDER THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT AS A DISABILITY. YOU MUST KNOW THIS INCASE YOU HAVE PROBLEMS IN THE FUTURE. YOUR BOSS IS A VERY COMPASSIONATE PERSON AND SHOULD BE COMMENDED FOR HELPING YOU.

MSFL- Hang in there. we're all rooting for you! Pamela- thank you for posting that an autoimmune disorder falls under the Americans with Disabilities act. Tthat is good to know (for all of us!). MSFL- do you have citizenship or a green card?

Legally im not free from her. I have to pay almony to her and then all the child support. I have been paying her 2000 a month but with the court order im down to 980 a month.

My work comes along great. I work hard and they are very pleased with my skills and knowledge.

Many people do not know that, before being diagnosed I wished for ADD or something because my friend got a lot of help about missing school because she has that. Well, she's a resturant major, so she was telling me about "gluten guy" at her hospitality school dinners. When I said "HEY! I GOT THAT BE NICE!" She's the one who told me that I'd qualify for disability assistance. Speaking of which, the school was giving me a hard time about the documentation process so I've gotta fax a form to my doctor as well!

My insurance kicks in 1st of feburary. Tommorow... (finally something good)

gang...

Here is an update before i go in to a meeting i have.

What a diffrence an insurance can do. Tuesday the 31th i developed extremly high fever and took my self to the ER. I had 103.5 when i arrived and after that i dont remember much. They placed me in ICU for two days with 104 in fever and really bad stomach pains. First when i was in the ward i started to grasp where i was and so on.

After almost 2 weeks in the hospital they came to conclusion that i have chrons also.. next week i go back to see if i need surgery.

Back at work today and doing pretty fine. Ofcourse everything else is still there and i need to fix all of that. But atleast i dont vomit everything i eat... The hospital keept me gluthen free and the dietist gave me really good info on the food....... they actually whent out and bought a bread for me that i liked ... had to have it toasted but it was defently better than nothing... I will write more later....

Oh and I meant to let you know, I believe Nexium contains gluten. Do NOT take it.

Nexium is just fine.

I was starting to wonder where you'd been. I'm glad that they took good care of you! And that you finally know what else (Crohn's) is going on too. That's probably why you couldn't eat anything. Crohn's on top of Celiac's would definitely do that to you! I don't know if you will have to have surgery or not, but my friend's son did about a year ago and he is doing SO much better. Hang in there, you've been through soooo much. Beverly

MS--Glad you checked in! Sounds like the job is going well? Hope so, and that you are happy there. Sorry you got so ill, but your trip to the hospital at least resulted in your Chron's dx. Make sure you eat as well as you can, and stay healthy in case you have to have the surgery. You've made such progress since we first heard from you--I just know everything's going to get better and better :)

I'm so glad to hear from you....!

MSFL2, I hope now that they have a diagnosis of what is causing so many problems they can get busy making you feel better. I hope that soon you will have a good place to live with a kitchen to prepare safe foods and that you can gain back a little of the weight you lost.

Take care and feel better.

No coincidence. Recent revisions to gluten challenge guidelines call for the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten (about the amount in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of 3 weeks. If possible, I would extend that two weeks to ensure valid testing.
    • SilkieFairy
Thank you both for the replies. I decided to bring back gluten so I can do the blood test. Today is Day #2 of the Challenge. Yesterday I had about 3 slices of whole wheat bread and I woke up with urgent diarrhea this morning. It was orange, sandy and had the distinctive smell that I did not have when I was briefly gluten free. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but the brain fog is back and I feel very tired.

@Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed. Interesting Reading: Clinical trial: B vitamins improve health in patients with coeliac disease living on a gluten-free diet https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19154566/ Safety and effectiveness of vitamin D mega-dose: A systematic review https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34857184/ High dose dietary vitamin D allocates surplus calories to muscle and growth instead of fat via modulation of myostatin and leptin signaling https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38766160/ Safety of High-Dose Vitamin D Supplementation: Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31746327/ Vitamins and Celiac Disease: Beyond Vitamin D https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11857425/ Investigating the therapeutic potential of tryptophan and vitamin A in modulating immune responses in celiac disease: an experimental study https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40178602/ Investigating the Impact of Vitamin A and Amino Acids on Immune Responses in Celiac Disease Patients https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10814138/

Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!
    • knitty kitty
Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?
