Celiac and Sinus/ear problems?

Hi All,

I am just wondering if any one has experienced sinus issues and ear problems before being diagnosed?  I had all these symptoms pop up at the beginning of December to do with my sinuses - headaches (had a brutal one last night that about made me vomit on the train home from work), sinus congestion, ear fullness, ETD and Tinnitus - it all started around the time where my GI symptoms started to pop up. I'm just wondering if it could be related.... I am still waiting to see the specialist...(apparently I have to wait 4.5 months which is another story) so, I've been unable to go gluten free and see if the symptoms go away. They are quite annoying, particularly the tinnitus which I am fearful is now permanent... I'm holding out for a glimmer of hope that they are related to the celiac and will go away once I am able to go gluten-free...

Yes, some folks tend to have more sinusitis. I used to get sinus infections and ear infections pretty frequently but haven't had one since going gluten-free. I think it may be that celiac disease is an autoimmune disease so your immune system is all screwed up from the reaction to gluten.

Thanks Fenrir!

At first I thought it was just a cold but it's been like this for 3 months... and since it started at the same time as my other symptoms I figured it was related to the celiac. I suspect the gluten must be causing a bunch of inflammation or something.

Yes, to quote an ENT doc I saw before I was diagnosed with Celiac's..."it's a train wreck in there."  I ended up getting allergy shots for years.  The pin prick test showed I was allergic to everything except the negative saline control one.  I was diagnosed with Celiac's in July and my next re-test for the allergies was in January.  By January, my allergy reactions went down more than they had in all the years I had been taking the shots.  I went for the allergy shots one more year, then it was good enough to stop.

I do still get sinus issues, but nothing like I used to, however I still cannot smell anything some days (but this we have now connected to hiatal hernia and the fumes getting up and causing sinus and asthma issues).  I've tried every herbal thing and prescription thing and nose drop thing there is.  What works best for me is to take Nettle on a daily basis, this is a natural antihistamine.

And what works really really well to keep that swollen feeling down, and especially to prevent colds and if I get stuffy to clear things up is Colloidal Silver.  I would only trust this brand, you have to make sure it is a particular form.  This is the same formula as one you would ingest, but it has a "vertical spray" so that you can spray it up your nose.  I did it for several times a day at first, and now just 1 time a day.

Thanks!

My doc put me on nasal steroids which definitely seem to be helping. I haven't had an allergy test though. I am going to see another ENT in a couple weeks so we will see what he says. I also had a bad bought of acid reflux right around the time this all started. It seems to have settled the last few weeks but perhaps it's some residual effects of that still. I really just can't wait to start gluten-free....still no biopsy date yet.

I could not tolerate the steroid sprays as after awhile they made my blood pressure super high. Be careful, they are steroids and you really don't want to be on those long term.

I had some acid reflux before I knew I had Celiac's and most of it went away after quitting gluten, but I still have symptoms when I lie down, so working on that with a naturopath.

The exercise here of drinking water in the morning and thumping down on your heels has helped me greatly:

https://drjockers.com/hiatal-hernia-natural-treatment/

Be careful also that doc might prescribe something to reduce stomach acid.  We need stomach acid to do its job so that the upper intestines can absorb vitamins, and it may take years to rebuild your vitamins.  You do not want to reduce your stomach acid.  Most acid reflux is NOT from too much stomach acid, but too little, which makes the food ferment and rot instead of digest.  This irritates the sphincter and up the esophagus, and the fumes can irritate the lungs and sinuses.  Stomach acid goes down as we age, and long term, causes vitamin deficiencies.

I have found that a little sip of apple cider vinegar, the type like Braggs, that has live stuff in it, helps a lot.  It adds just enough acid.  (this is also mentioned in the article above).

Work with doctors that do not just prescribe drugs that just reduce symptoms, and make sure they are working with you on the root cause.

Yeah I am having a really bad case of eustachian tube dysfunction so i am hoping the steroids can help clear up that mess a bit. Thats the most annoying thing cause its what's caused my tinnitus. I really dont like taking meds at all so the fact that I am doing the steroids at all is a measure if just how bad it is. They at least lower my tinnitus to a manageable level.

I am thinking I have my reflux under control as the symptoms have seemed to stop. But I certainly will not be taking any meds for it as my b12 is already low and I'm on injections for that.

Thanks for your input!

LJR,

I used to have sinus/ear problems twice a year....like clock work...at the time I didn't know what was happening...but because I study a lot about nutrition today....I can give you some clues on your tinnitus...I was just studying this topic fo ra friend...here a some links that can help you.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22249877

https://www.webmd.com/men/news/20020729/humming-may-help-sinuses-stay-healthy

try you some magnesium glycinate .....magnesium has been shown to help tinnitus. try some humming for your sinuses.... webmd is a summary...the 2nd link is the original resesearch...

https://www.webmd.com/men/news/20020729/humming-may-help-sinuses-stay-healthy

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10366574

Have your doctor check you for EBV....see above link on humming for you sinuses....EBV has been linked to Celiac disease

I hope this is helpful but it is not medical advise.

How is one tested for Celiac Disease? I have had several endoscopes and the lower part too and none of the doctors have said anything about it. I have BIG issues with bloating, severe pain in my upper chest (under the chest bone), at times throwing up and all the time with the running nose and ears stopping up!! I just figures I was getting old, but after reading the "sinus/ear" notes above, now I am wondering.....Jacqueline

Your doctor would run a blood tests (ask for full celiac panel) and then confirm with endoscopy and biopsy :) celiac doesn't always show up on endoscopy and sometimes the biopsy is what confirms.

The doctor did 8 biopsy from the top of my throat to the bottom of my stomach....he thought I had H-Hyploi..but I did not. I am beginning to think they are missing my issues. He gave me some pump inhibitors, that's it. I have an appt. with a different GI on March 9...I really need to figure out what to ask for and not let them tell me what they can do. I feel like I have wasted WAY TOO many years with this gut, sinus, ear and other issues. I put myself on gluten-free and it helps, but not totally.

The biopsy would need to come from your small intestine. That's where the damage is done from celiac. But you need to be on a gluten diet for the tests to be accurate. How long have you been on the PPIs? My hubby had severe acid reflux issues and the ppis helped after a couple months. Hes off them now because you shouldn't be on them too long. Have you seen an ent?

Been on PPI for two weeks..they help a little. Been on gluten-free (not 100 percent) for about 1 month. Hoping IF he can't find anything, he is smart enough to send me to a internalist, but who knows what he will do. I feel like he really don't care since I don't have insurance.

I can understand why you'd be desperate and 'try anything' to find relief, but the FDA warned in 1999 that colloidal silver isn’t safe or effective for treating any disease or condition.  The FDA and the Federal Trade Commission have taken action against a number of companies for making misleading claims about colloidal silver products.

Yes, good call....people should avoid ingesting colloidal silver

Quote

Is Colloidal Silver Safe?

Colloidal silver can cause serious side effects. The most common is argyria, a bluish-gray discoloration of the skin, which is usually permanent.

Colloidal silver can also cause poor absorption of some drugs, such as certain antibiotics and thyroxine (used to treat thyroid deficiency).

The FDA also warned in 1999 that colloidal silver isn’t safe or effective for treating any disease or condition.

The FDA and the Federal Trade Commission have taken action against a number of companies for making misleading claims about colloidal silver products.

More About Argyria

Silver can build up in the body’s tissue, causing a bluish-gray discoloration of large areas of skin, especially those exposed to the sun.

People have developed argyria from using homemade and commercial colloidal silver products.

Is Colloidal Silver Effective?

Scientific evidence doesn’t support the use of colloidal silver dietary supplements for any disease or condition.

Silver has no known function or benefits in the body when taken by mouth.

Silver is not a nutritionally essential mineral or a useful dietary supplement.

I've had tinnitus for as long as I can remember, and always assumed it was because of going to rock concerts and clubs in my misspent youth. ;)

However, my fatigue got worse recently and I started having peripheral neuropathy symptoms, and my tinnitus also got worse at the same time.

My ears always clog up in airplanes and I have to forcibly equalize the pressure, but I always assumed this was from a childhood ear infection.

knitty kitty Grand Master

Fatigue, peripheral neuropathy and tinnitus can all be symptoms of thiamine deficiency.

I finally got my sense of taste and smell back (been gone since before 2015)!!! I started following a flush niacin (nicotinic acid, not niacinamide)  protocol for prevention of covid and overall health.  When l-serine and a few other co-factors were added, BAM!  In a few days, it all came back.  That was late January.  Even when I got covid, I didn't lose smell or taste, in fact, it was extra strong and not distorted like some people get.  It's still good, not great on some days now in Spring when my allergies are kicking up, but still strong as long as I keep taking the flush niacin, l-serine, and a few others.

Interesting. I’ve been trying high dose thiamine for the last couple of weeks. 1200mg right now. My energy levels improved a lot fairly quickly, but the tinnitus has been pretty constant.
the tingling and pins and needles has also improved, but that’s more subtle and harder to quantify.
I got some kind of virus last week with a sore throat and headache, and cold-like fatigue. Negative antigen and pcr tests so not covid (Phew), but even the fatigue from being sick feels different than before. its hard to describe, but now  even  when I’m tired and need a nap, I still feel like I have energy. No longer feeling completely drained and whenever I had energy It felt fleeting.

Some interesting articles regarding the use of Zinc Carnosine to help heal gastric ulcers, gastritis and intestinal permeability. He is. Which makes everything even more difficult. I’m not a believer in “staying for the kids” but I have nowhere to go and it’s not just me, it’s me plus my babies. We live in a beautiful place, lots of land in the country and me and the kids love the place we’ve called home for their entire lives. But Im seeing that he’ll never change, that my kids deserve a happy healthy Momma, and that staying in this as is will be the early death of me. Then I look at the scars covering my entire body…this disease and the chronic stress I’ve been enduring for years that tell me I’m no longer beautiful and no one will ever look at me with interest again. I try self care, try to give myself grace so I can just start loving myself enough to gain strength but the slightest sparkle in my eye and skip in my step attracts his wrath and it all comes crashing ten fold. Life is just absolutely railing me from every single direction leaving me wanting to wave that white flag bc I don’t feel like there’s much hope no matter what happens.

Hi, I was recently diagnosed with Celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis after years of suffering without answers. I lost my mind. I lost my job. I lost so much time. I lost Me. Conventional doctors are opulent come near me and the one who did sat across the room, misdiagnosed me, pumped me full of steroids which collapsed my entire hip for 6 months. So without answers I began my holistic journey. Fast forward a couple of years and still struggling with a mysterious whole body itchy, crawling “skin hell”, perfect teeth now deteriorating, thick hair now thinning rapidly and no more than a day or 2 at most relief….An acquaintance opened up a functional medicine practice. Cash only, I found a way. Within a month tests clearly showing my off the charts gluten allergy/sensitivity as well as the depletion of vital nutrients due to leaky gut and intestinal damage. dermatitis herpetiformis was more than likely what I was experiencing with my skin. I was happy. I thought this is easy, eat healthy Whole Foods, follow the diet restrictions and I finally get to heal and feel confident and like myself again very soon! 😔 Supplements are very pricey but I got them and began my healing. Which leads to the other major issue: not working, stay at home Mom of young kids, entirely financially dependent on my man of 7 plus years. He’s never been supportive of anything I’ve ever done or been thru. He controls everything. I’m not given much money ever at a time and when he does leave money it’s only enough to possibly get gas. His excuse is that I’ll spend it on other things. So my “allowance” is inconsistent and has conditions. He withholds money from me as punishment for anything he wants. Since being diagnosed, he’s gained a new control tactic to use as punishment. He now is in control of when I get to eat. He asked for proof of my diagnosis and diet bc he said I made it up just to be able to eat expensive organic foods. Then after I sent him my file from my doctor he then said she wasn’t a real doctor. 😡. I go days upon days starving, sometimes breaking down and eating things I shouldn’t bc I’m so sick then I pay horribly while he gets annoyed and angry bc I’m not keeping up with all the duties I’m supposed to be doing. His abuse turns full on when I’m down and it’s in these desperate times when I need his support and care the most that I’m punished with silence, being starved, ignored, belittled. He will create more of a mess just bc I’m unable to get up and clean so that when I am better, I’m so overwhelmed with chores to catch up that the stress causes me to go right back into a flare from hell and the cycle repeats. I’m punished for being sick. I’m belittled for starving and asking for healthy clean water. I’m purposely left out of his life. He won’t even tell me he’s going to the grocery or to get dinner bc he doesn’t want me to ask him for anything. I have no one. I have nothing. Im not better. My supplements ran out and I desperately need Vitamin D3 and a methylated B complex at the very minimal just to function….he stares at me blankly…no, a slight smirk, no words. He’s happiest when im miserable and I am miserable.  this is so long and im condensing as much as I can but this situation is so complicated and disgusting. And it’s currently my life. The “IT” girl, the healthy, beautiful, perfect skin, perfect teeth, thick and curly locks for days, creative and talented IT girl….now I won’t even leave this house bc Im ashamed of what this has dont to my body, my skin. Im disgusted. The stress is keeping me from healing and I think he knows that and that’s why he continues to keep me in that state. He doesn’t want me confident or successful. He doesn’t want me healed and healthy bc then how would he put the blame of all his problems on me? This journey has been hell and I’ve been in Hell before. I’ve been killed by an ex, I’ve been raped, robbed, held hostage, abused beyond nightmares but the cruelty I’ve experienced from him bc of this disease is the coldest I’ve ever experienced. I’ve wanted to give up. Starving and in tears, desperate…I found a local food pantry in our small town so I reached out just saying I had Celiac and was on hard times. This woman is blessing me daily with prepared gluten free meals, donations, educational info, people who know this disease and how they manage life and the blessings just keep coming. But it’s overwhelming and I feel like I don’t deserve it at all. He just glared and I know he’s going to sabotage it somehow. I don’t even know what to do anymore. I’m so broken and just want peace and healing.

@Colleen H   I am just curious,  when you were tested for coeliac disease, did the doctors find out if you had any deficiencies? Sometimes muscle pain can be caused by certain deficiencies, for example, magnesium, vitamin D, calcium, and potassium.   Might be worth looking into having some more tests.  Pins and needles can be neuropathy, again caused by deficiencies, such as iron and B12,  which can be reversed if these deficiencies are addressed. In the UK where I live we are usually only tested for iron, B12 and vitamin D deficiencies at diagnosis.   I was very iron anemic and supplementation made a big difference.  B12 was low normal, but in other countries the UK's low normal would be considered a deficiency.  My vitamin D was low normal, and I've been supplementing ever since (when I remember to take it!) My pins and needles definitely started to improve when my known deficiencies were addressed.  My nutritionist also gave me a broad spectrum supplement which really helped, because I suspect I wasn't just deficient in what I mention above but in many other vitamins and minerals.  But a word of warning, don't take iron unless blood tests reveal you actually need it, and if you are taking it your levels must be regularly monitored because too much can make you ill.  (And if you are currently taking iron, that might actually be making your stomach sore - it did mine, so my GP changed my iron supplementation to a gentler form, ferrous gluconate). Lastly, have you been trying to take anything to lessen the pain in your gut?  I get a sore stomach periodically, usually when I've had too much rich food, or when I have had to take an aspirin or certain antibiotics, or after glutening.  When this happens, I take for just a few days a small daily dose of OTC omeprazole.  I also follow a reflux or gastritis diet. There are lots online but the common denominators to these diets is you need to cut out caffeine, alcohol, rich, spicy, acidic food etc and eat small regularly spaced meals.   When I get a sore stomach, I also find it helpful to drink lots of water.  I also find hot water with a few slices of ginger very soothing to sip, or camomile tea.  A wedge pillow at night is good for reflux. Also,  best not to eat a meal 2-3 hours before going to bed. If the stomach pain is getting worse, though, it would be wise to see the doctor again. I hope some of this helps. Cristiana
