B12 Malabsorption?

When I got all of my bloodwork back, my Vitamin B12 level was very low )48 with normal levels 228-1132. I'm getting weekly B12injections. My iron, calcium were very normal. Folic acid and megnesium, potassium were in the low normal range. I was wondering if anyone had a B12 level markedly low, with normal iron who has been diagnosed Celiac? I do not have pernicious anemia, so the only other possibilities that I think could cause that (I had a negative biopsy) are h. pylori and/or low stomach acid. Also I think B12 is absorbed lower in the small intestine, which wasn't biopsied, so maybe that is where my damage is? If there is damege.

My B12 level falls within the normal ranges and I still do a sublingual 1200 mcg B12 supplement daily. I have peripheral neuropathy now as a result of celiacs and they tell us that normal ranges are not high enough for us. B12 deficiencies open the door for other diseases to come in--try to keep your levels up--ok. Deb

Hey Slpinsd,

I also had low vitamin B levels and my doctor suggested a vitamin B complex. A few of my other levels were also low--vitamin D, magnesium, and calcium. Because we have celiac disease, we haven't been absorbing nutrients properly. Have you had a bone scan done to check for osteoporsis?

On your neuropathy, did your feet (heels, arches) hurt, even in the middle of the night? Or was it mostly tingling, burning? I've been having the foot and muscle pain

My husband also gets B12 injections. His levels were low also (under the normal range) and he had normal iron levels also. He has recently had increased liver enzymes in his last bloodwork. He is getting the injections now once monthly he was getting them biweekly. The doctor said his levels were coming up now but he wants him to continue with the injections monthly.

Can some of you tell me what your symptoms were?

This is a very old thread and it's likely the original posters aren't even active on the forum any more so it's doubtful they will even see your post.

Can some of you tell me what your symptoms were?

The most obvious symptoms for me were parasthesias which are numbness and tingling in my hands and feet and fatigue.

Sublingual B12 helped me a great deal.

"Conclusions: The urinary iodine level was significantly lower in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis, and iodine replacement may be important in preventing osteoporosis"  Body iodine status in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis Low iodine can cause thyroid problems, but Iodine deficiency will not show up in thyroid tests.  Iodine is important for healing, its job is to kill off defective and aging cells (Apoptosis). Skin, brain fog, nails, muscle tone all inproved when I started taking 600 mcg (RDA 150 - 1000 mcg) of Liquid Iodine drops. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis, Iodine exacerbates the rash.  I started at 1 drop (50 mcg) and worked up to 12 drops, but I don't have dermatitis herpetiformis.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I found myself giggling with happiness as I read how your body reached such spring! And I hope that your current journey is also successful!! Definitely starting the food diary! So many amazing advices. And it’s very scary. It really hits all our soft spots as well as our confidence system. Most doctors I went thought I was underage despite being in my late 20s. Right now I look like am I twelve, but is also this body that’s taking so much, so I might as well love it too! Going to make the necessary changes and stay in this path. Thank you again! 🫶

Thank you so much for the information and kind message! Reading this transformed how I’ve been viewing my efforts and progress. Guess there’s still a lot to celebrate and also heal 😌  Yes, I’ve been taking it! Just recently started taking a multivitamin supplement and separated vitamin D! I also took chewable Iron polymaltose for ferritin deficiency 2 months ago but was unable to absorb any of it.  Thank you again! Hearing such gentle words from the community makes my body and heart more patient and excited for the future.
