Applebees Help

Calling all my celiac buddies, help help help! My office is having a birthday lunch for one of our coworkers tomorrow they were originally going to Issacs and I had called Issacs and had inquired about their Honey Dijon chicken salad which I was told is gluten-free. After all that the woman changed her mind and they are now going to Applebees, which the only thing I found on their menu that appeared might be gluten-free is the Italian Chicken Caesar Salad. I am going to ask you guys if you have ever had any luck at Applebees? If so with what? I only have gluten allergies so dairy and soy, etc are not a problem. I want to hold off calling Applebees until I hear your suggestions, you guys have been there and done that. Thanks All.

Ps-don't you hate when people change their plans suddenly after you get everything figured out!

I ate at Applebee's recently. The manager first said they couldn't help me. I told them I would eat whatever they found to be safe. I ended up with a piece of chicken and some pineapple slices and strawberries. I don't remember if the chicken was marinated or not. I think they said that the chicken comes marinated and with the ingredients on the box, so I don't know if it was ok, or if they gave me some unmarinated chicken. I was getting take out and they called me back 3 times to confirm that what they were giving me was ok. I felt fine afterwards and it was a healthy lunch.

I ate at Applebee's about a year ago. All the manager could find that was not pre-seasoned was a salmon steak, which I had. He told me the next time to bring my own baked potatoe and they would microwave it for me. I screwed up on the tossed salad and forgot to have them leave off the cheese and I got glutened from that. I figure they use that pre-pkg. shredded cheese with a no name brand and so many of those use gluten to keep them from sticking. Call them now and see if they have more unseasoned options then the salmon steak. I stay away from pre-seasoned items. If you want the Chicken Ceasar Salad, then ask when you call if the chicken is plain or is it seasoned, etc. Don't forget to have them leave off the croutons (& cheese to be safe) and stress that if they forget and put them on, and then take them off, you will still be very sick. The manager at the one we went to - TRIED really hard not to get me sick and the gluten I had was my fault, not theirs. Have a nice lunch and don't panic. Just enjoy.

Sorry, I think I got you mixed up with another poster.

I hadn't been eating gluten free before having the antibody test done. I started eating gluten free after having the test done because the gastro PA told me to eat gluten-free for 6 months. I'm now 3 months in.

I tend to agree with RMJ. Your doc took the reasonable and practical approach to diagnosis. All things considered, it was the right way to go. However, if you have first degree relatives that show signs of possible celiac disease, urge them to get formally tested before they start the gluten free diet.

It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.
