Hi guys,

I was diagnosed with celiac 4 days ago after months of quite severe symptoms. After 4 days of following a gluten free diet I have noticed dramatic improvement.

however tonight I vomited again , I have ingested zero gluten however I did drink a bottle of apple cider so I’m wondering if it could be alcohol related ? I was also diagnosed with malabsorption and am currently treating that through vit b12 and iron pills.

Healing can take months to years, and you may react to many things that don't contain gluten, but cause issues. I recommend going through this topic:

I will add that celiac disease is autoimmune.  That means gluten is the trigger that sets off a flare up (those with IBD, lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis never really know what triggers their immune system).    Antibodies can take time to ramp up.  So, just because gluten is physically no longer lingering in your gut, does not mean your immune system has turned off (remission).    It takes time.  Most celiacs report needing a year to feel good.  Expect some set backs, but stay the course.  You can heal!

Alcohol?  Avoid it until your gut is not so damaged and raw.   Give it a few weeks and then experiment.

Thank you for the advice. I’ve actually never checked for nutritional deficiencies, but for as long as I can remember, I’ve always taken vitamin and mineral supplements — otherwise my symptoms get worse. This week I stopped eating gluten to confirm whether my symptoms are really caused by it. Starting next week, I’ll reintroduce gluten — it’s sad to go back to how I was before — but at least I’ll be able to take the necessary tests properly. I think the diagnostic process will be long, but at least I’m happy that I finally decided to address this doubt I’ve had for years.

Hey Julie! I was in a similar situation before my biopsy and my gastro said Tylenol was fine. Just avoid ibuprofen or anything anti-inflammatory until you're cleared. Hope your surgery goes smoothly!

I don't see how cornstarch could alter the test results. Where did you read that?

For pain relief I take a combination of Thiamine (Benfotiamine), Pyridoxine B 6, and Cobalamine B12.  The combination of these three vitamins has analgesic effects.  I have back pain and this really works.  The B vitamins are water soluble and easily excreted.   Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your results!
