Really Quick Question....what Is The Strongest

Hi, I am having tons of gastritis problems right now and every strong medicine that I see on the gfdrug list I downloaded from this website is not on there! I usually use pepto, but that doesn't seem to work anymore. What do you use?

My symptoms are not 'D.' They are chest pains, some stomach, rib and back pains. My insides are very acidic right now.

Basically, what do you use when you get glutened and have a lot of gas and stomach issues. Something that really works, all the time.

Thanks for any help!

have you tried baking soda for the acid? some ppl have great luck with DGL

I just started Mastica this week, suppose to help

If you have any chance of an ulcer, DO NOT USE PEPTO!!! Also, DO NOT use asprin, alka seltzer, advil, motrin, or anything with ibuprofen. They will make the stomach upset worse (I learned this the hard way, and now I can't take any of them)

Extra strength tums or rolaids with tylenol are probably your best OTC bet. You might want to call your doctor though and see if he can prescribe you anything. You can take prilosec OTC, but it'll take a couple of days to work. (if it does, it never did on me)

Hope you feel better :)

Hi Dani--I'm having the same type of issues. Lots of upper abdominal gas that just won't budge--belching, chest pressure, etc. My GI told me to use Phazyme and it helps, but only a bit and not for very long. I find using a digestive enzyme as I begin to eat a meal helps more. I've been using the Whole Foods brand--gluten-free right on the label and not expensive at all. Did these problems get worse after you went gluten-free? I ask because mine did.

Thanks!

Well, I could try the baking soda....and also, do tums or rolaids really work?

stay away from peppermint..its the worst thing for ulcers/acid

Thanks Patti. Well, yeah, for the past two weeks I'm having tons of problems. I'm finally seeing the dietician tonight. I'm excited because I really need help with food over here with all of the intolerances.

I wouldn't say this all started going gluten-free because when I eat the right foods, I don't have this problem at all. But my diet has been very messed up and I even tried nuts (dummy me) wondering if they would bother me. Well, of course, they did! Kind of like when I first heard about gluten and would try it because I didn't believe it and then get sicker than anything. This isn't as bad as being glutened, but it's annoying because you can't test for other intolerances like you can for gluten. Except by trying them out, of course.

Anyway, why do you think you're problems are worse since gluten-free? Do you have a lot of other food intolerances? Are you seeing a nutritionist to help coach you on an elimination diet?

I always thought peppermint was really good for indigestion and acid! It's in almost every tea I drink!

Yes--I have many more intolerances since going gluten-free 8 months ago. I believe I am intolerant of all grains--this is the second time I have tried cutting them out, and each time, I feel better. I have an appt. with an allergist on Friday--I'm goint to start there. On the phone the nurse told me they test for food allergies. I explained that I have Celiac and that I seem to be getting increasingly sensitive to other foods and she said to come in for a consult and we'd go from there. If this does not work out (I so hope it does) I plan to go the independant lab route. Be careful of Tums--I have read on here that at least some of them are not gluten-free. For me, antacids never work.

Well Patti, I hope you get some answers soon. It sounds like you're in the same boat as me these days. I have so many intolerances, and I'm starting to worry they will never end! I really hope this dietician can help me. She said she has worked with other Celiacs before, so I'm hoping that she'll know exactly how to go about this so I can really heal my gut. I don't care what it takes these days. Today all I had was 2 bowls of white rice with some cooked baby carrots. If I have to live like this for a few weeks, or whatever, that's fine, as long as it will be sure to heal me!

And thanks for the warning on tums. I need something though, my chest is burning.

Prilosec might help. You could try that.

good luck tonight..I'll be interested to hear what she has to say, I seem to be having the same problems.

peppermint is good for the tummy, bad for ulcers and heartburn...I ended up in the ER because of it, thought I was having a heart attack and the worst burning in my life

The best luck I've had with OTC is Zantac. I think it comes in 75 mg pills. It's gluten-free but I always need to take two. It works pretty fast.

jerseyangel Proficient

Zantac--I'll keep that in mind--thanks. Is that your little neice you've talked about?

Prilosec is gluten free. Works awesome for heartburn, but I am afraid to quit taking it. It isn't instant relief. It actually takes a few days to work. It only took about 24 hours to work for me. I have been taking it a little over two weeks and need to stop, but I haven't been able to quit caffeine and I am afraid the horrible heartburn will come back.

Can't remember if Zantac or Prilosec worked better for me. Know that on one list, it says that Nexium contains gluten -- took it for 90 days prior to my dx. Tums doesn't contain gluten, if you need a quick fix. I don't get the mint ones, either -- they're terrible for your stomach. The fruit ones are pretty yummy, actually. (Sad that you get so used to antacids that they start to taste good, huh?)

No wonder they didn't work for me...

I usually take stomach meds with tylenol, because there is usually pain involved. I've truly never really had anything work. Except the antispasmodics like bentyl (prescription)

Tagamet is good also, and keep in mind that you can take tums as well as one of the other meds if you really need to. Tums is just calcium :)

I was reading your posting on Nexium and was surprised. My daughter was recently diagnosed through a biopsy and she has been on the diet for 3 months now and still having pain. She was given Nexium to take 2x a day. I wonder if that is why she is still having pain. She just had genetic testing to find out 100% if she is or not. I dont know what more to do for the pain. She has pain behind her bellybutton but nothing we do seems to get rid of the pain. I am very careful what to feed her and she still is not responding. Her pain at times is bad and at other times not so but she has pain all the time. She is 18 and not really getting used to this so well. Before, she was taking Nexium and Zantac and then he changed it to just Nexium. How did you find out that Nexium has gluten.

Hi its Karen again, I went on the Nexium website and there is info on the first page that specifically states that Nexium is definitely gluten free.

Phewww, I'm on Nexium and just about had a heart attack when it was posted earlier that it had gluten. My doc told me it was gluten-free, so that's a relief!

I take both Pepcid and Nexium. I take the Nexium at night before bed b/c I have problems with stomach acids during the evening/when I wake up in the morning. I like the Nexium, but it is prescription. I take Pepcid and digestive enzymes as needed, both are OTC.

I have a large hiatal hernia and was prescribed generic prilosec Omeprazole. I take one in the morning and one at night. For the most part it seems to work. Sometimes during the day I may take a Zantac 75 about 4:00 in the afternoon when I start feeling bloated.

I don't thing it has anything to do with celiac, just the hernia issue.

Aleve is the best for your stomach.

If I'm not mistaken, it's either in the Gluten Free Bible, or Gluten-Free Living. Will have to check it out . . . Sorry to scare you :( . . . . Lynne

Sorry if there was any confusion about Tums--I mentioned that I had read here that they were not safe and because I thought I was losing my mind, I checked back and found it--

Open Original Shared Link

Posts #2 & 5 mention it, so at the very least, I'm not nuts! I checked their website and it said although they do not use gluten as a filler, they cannot guarantee ingredients from suppliers. I know from personal experience that they always made me feel sicker, so I stopped using them.

It looks like "mannite" is another name for "mannitol": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mannitol You are correct that it can trigger IBS-like symptoms, as we recently did an article on this: I'm not sure if there is a way around this, as it is likely needed for the test. Perhaps contact your doctor to see if there might be an alternative?

Oral drink: You will be given a solution of mannitol mixed with water to drink over a period of about 30-60 minutes this is what it says it is ,?

Brilliant thankyou for the information I will contact them tomorrow, I was just concerned because I'm already in a bowel flare too , and I didn't want to take anything that would cause me more issues , especially with the way sweeteners make be feel I've had a really bad throat from this type of stuff before , and it upsets my digestive system too and I have a wedding in a week 😳

There is no scientific evidence to suggest that hydrated silica or its relative, silicon dioxide, triggers a celiac-specific immune response or causes intestinal damage in individuals with the condition. The concern you likely encountered online is a common misconception. Here’s the key distinction: the protein in gluten (gliadin) is what causes the autoimmune reaction in celiac disease. Hydrated silica and silicon dioxide are minerals, chemically inert compounds of silicon and oxygen, and are completely unrelated to gluten proteins. They are widely used as abrasives in toothpaste and anti-caking agents in food powders because they are stable and non-reactive. While any individual can have a unique sensitivity to any substance, there is no mechanism by which these silica compounds would mimic gluten or exacerbate celiac disease. Your diligence in using a certified gluten-free toothpaste is the correct and most important step, as it eliminates the risk of cross-contamination with wheat-derived ingredients like starch. Based on current scientific understanding, the hydrated silica in your toothpaste is not an issue for your celiac management.

There is no single "best" probiotic brand universally recommended for celiac disease. The goal of a probiotic in this context is to help support the gut microbiome, which can be disrupted by the damage caused by gluten exposure. The most important factor is not the brand name, but ensuring the product is certified gluten-free, as some probiotics use wheat-derived starches or are produced in facilities that handle gluten, posing a cross-contamination risk. Furthermore, the specific strains of bacteria can matter; some research suggests strains like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium may be beneficial, but individual responses vary greatly. Because the supplement industry is not tightly regulated, choosing a reputable brand that undergoes third-party testing for purity and potency is key.
