Anyone Doing Scd?

I always thought carrots were fairly high in sugar for a veggie...which is why a lot of weight loss diets say don't eat them. OK. if that's true why is the SCD stressing them so much if we are to be careful with sugar???? It seems like we'd be better off eating some other vegetable... And Rachel...exactly how many carrots are you eating each day???

I dont think the diet is stressing sugar so much...I think its mainly stressing dissacharrides and polysacharrides...the sugars that arent predigested. Fruits and any sugar that is a monosaccharride is ok for SCD.

I'm not eating any carrots now because I have a bad sensitivity to salicylates. All of the foods moderate to high in salicylates will give me reaction once they build up in my system. Its nothing to do with sugar...I can actually eat tons of white sugar and not get a reaction at all cuz its got no salicylates.

I'm not eating sugar because I do have candida and dysbiosis and white sugar is a dissacharride. Sugar will feed the candida and keep me feeling crappy but it wont give me the allergic type reaction that salicylates do. I get reactions from all skin products containing salicylates as well.

Yay, I added green beans yesterday (cooked really well) and so far so good. I also had tuna one day. I also had a bit of diluted orange juice this morning. I'm sooooo looking forward to adding some of the stuff in the next phase, lol.

Some friends wanted to go out to lunch yesterday and at first I said no because I didn't want it to be a big problem on deciding where to go for my diet. They convinced me and we went. I ended up having a flat iron steak. That's it, lol. The plate really looked pitiful when it came. Fortunately the steak was good. I asked if they had cooked carrots or green beans but the waitress said the only had broccoli, which I didn't think I wanted to add quite yet. So, now I've had my first dining out experience on SCD.

Dani - keep in mind that the pancakes do not really taste like pancakes...the texture is different because there is no type of flour. It helped me before tasting these to think of them as a banana treat instead of the usual pancakes I've been used to. And, about the egg...I was thinking I would try it with just the banana one day and see how that turned out...I like fried bananas and I think the egg is what makes the texture different in the pancakes.

Donna, thanks for warning me. You're right, I hear pancakes and I drool at the thought of soft spongie buttery syrupy carbs. But I love bananas too, so I'm sure I would like it anyway.

So, I don't know about you guys, but I haven't gone a day without TONS of carrots since a week and a half ago when I started the diet. And they don't bother me at all (knock on wood) unless I eat them raw. I noticed that I can't handle ANYTHING raw. I have to cook everything very very very well for me to eat them. On Saturday, I had a raw apple and raw carrots, both of which I have been eating for a few days. I didn't add anything new in that day, but I got the worst back, stomach, bloating, gas, etc. all over again. Well, the next day I had exactly the same thing except my stuff was cooked, and I was fine. I'm still fine now, and I ate tons of carrots for dinner yesterday. What's really the big difference between raw and well cooked? What does it do to the veggie/fruit?

So, how often are you guys adding foods in? I mess things up a lot (like the raw veggies, because I think it is something else, and then I find out I was right all along), so I take it easy the next few days. So besides the intro. diet food, all I've added yet was apples and mangos, of course, cooked. Am I going to slow?

And I'm so excited because I finally found starch, sugar, yeast, etc. free acidopholis and cal./mag. vitamans. I also got flax oil, so I can start going to the bathroom regularly again. Oh, that's another question. Do any of you know why flax oil is okay, but not flax seeds?

You're welcome! I've been eating TONS of carrots as well. I think I bought 4 or 6 pounds of carrots last week and had used them up by Friday. This week I bought 10 pounds of carrots, lol. I've already used 5 to make chicken soup and to have some to freeze for my lunches this week. I think cooking them just makes them much easier to digest. I do think cooking (or boiling at least) the stuff probably takes a little of the nutrients out, but for now anyway, I think the food actually has to get digested before we'd get those anyway.

I'm trying to wait every couple of days or at least every other day before adding in a new food. But sometimes (like this weekend) I introduced two new foods in one day. I figure the waiting period gives me a chance to figure out if I'll react before I add in another food. If I don't have a reaction then I figure both those foods are okay...if I do react I'll just take both of them out and add back one at a time in a few days to find out which one was the guilty party.

Let's see I've added tomatoe juice, orange juice, green beans, and tuna. Pretty easily digested stuff. I wanted to add mayo, but my attempt at making my own was a disaster, lol. I'm going to try ketchup tonight. :D :D :D

What brand of acidopholis did you buy? I spent so long at Whole Foods Saturday trying to read all the labels...I finally got disgusted and just gave up, lol. Unfortunately I did that AFTER I spent a lot of time trying to read the labels on the Flax Oil capsules, lol. So may of THOSE have carob in the capsule. I even had an employee helping me read labels. I finally did find one without carob. I may have stuck it out on the acidopholis if I hadn't already read so many labels.

danikali Enthusiast

Hi Donna,

I know what you're talking about when you said all of the acidopholis had bad ingrediants in it. I found one, the pearls that said they were free of everything, but it didn't say free of starch. But in the inactive ingrediants, it didn't list anything bad. The brand is Enzymatic Therapy, it's the acidopholis pearls. Also, I didn't know there were flax pills, do you know the difference between the pills and the oil? I buy the oil and just put in on my hamburger meat because I can't taste it there and it works.

So what's everyone eating today? I need to take a look at those recipes. Today, I'm only having carrots and hamburger for both breakfast and lunch, juice in between meals, maybe a cooked apple or two, and the chicken soup for dinner. Now that I know for sure that I MUST cook everything, I'm sure I can get ahead more than I have in this past week considering I keep running back to the safe food after hurting myself with the raw stuff.

Also, I didn't see that whole section on the SCD website where Elaine explains everything a-z. I'm going to go back to it because if I had done that a while ago, I would have read that raw fruits and veggies aggrevate BOTH C AND D, under the C diet. I could have saved myself some time and discomfort. But who would have known? In the book, all it talks about is D! It said, 'don't introduce raw fruit/veggies until the D has stopped for a good period of time.' I have C!

dlp252 Apprentice

I'm taking flax oil because my eye doctor wants me too, lol. I told him I had the oil, but didn't like the taste and he said the pills were fine (they're softgels). Most of the brands at Whole Foods had carob in the soft gel capsule, but we finally found one...I'll have to check the name when I get home because I sure had never heard of it before.

I'll look for the pearls this weekend.

Let's see, what am I eating today:

For breakfast I had the banana pancakes (w/egg) and an extra egg and some diluted orange juice.

I'm having lunch right now, that's chicken thigh and carrots...will have the same for a snack in a couple of hours plus some weak black tea with honey.

For dinner I'll probably have ground beef with green beans and some diluted grape juice, or maybe tomatoe juice.

Snack will be applesauce probably or I may have some chicken soup or both.

Oh yeah, another question. Is anyone loosing or gaining weight on this diet? I seem to stay the same, so far at least. Just curioius.

I've lost a couple of pounds. That's good since I'd gained about 7 pounds from binging on gluten-free junk food. :D I'm one of those gluten-intolerant people who is not underweight, but not heavy either.

I lost 2 pounds over the weekend. But then again, I have had a drop in my appetite because of stomach issues last week.

Rachel--24 Collaborator

I had to trade in my carrots for cabbage and celery since those have 0 salicylates. So far so good with eating those but they dont taste as good as the carrots did. :(

I think I may have lost a pound or two last week but now I'm doing ok. As long as I dont go under 100 I'm cool with it. I'm feeling pretty good and had a good w/end so seems like I'm on the right track.

Once I get too many salicylates in my system it takes a couple weeks to be able to tolerate even tiny amounts. I tried a mango yesterday to test myself and it caused a reaction so I'm sticking to my ripe pears and golden delicious apples for awhile.

Thas basically what I'm eating...chicken, beef, cabbage, celery, lettuce, pears and apples.

Rachel how tall are you? I need a guide because I am fast approaching that weight now. I can't fall below 100 either.

I'm 5'2. Last year I was only 94 lbs. pre-diagnosis and everyone made a point to let me know I was too thin. Nobodys saying anything now so I guess I'm ok. Someone told me I look alot better now that I'm "gaining" but I've actually lost a couple so I guess its not noticeable. :)

Thanks! I should have mentioned that I am also 5'2". Pre-diagnosis I was 112 lbs. I haven't been under a 100 lbs in many years (but I think I am a bit older than you!) :-) But I have lost about 8 lbs in 2 weeks. So that is kind of concerning me. 100-103 lbs is the max I want to drop to as well. But if it goes below that, I don't know how I will be able to stop it. I am not trying to lose!

Could you tell me what the diet is ?

I'm not eating a lot of other things on top of gluten and still having some issues so I'm curious as to what this might be about.

It's, with few exceptions, no sugar (unless from fruit) and no grains, no starch, meaning, not even rice or potatoes or any exotic grains out there that a lot of gluten free foods use instead of gluten. Nada. Look at the legal/illegal list.

Donna -LOL - I did exactly the same thing on F night with the banana pancakes. I made one big pancake in the pan and couldn't flip it over. It was pretty mangled by the time it was all cooked, but it tasted good. I tried again yesterday with much small pancakes and they actually looked like a pancake.

Today I had chicken + carrot soup for breakfast and lunch. Snacks this afternoon will be an egg, canned pears and some carrots with honey + ginger. Tonight for dinner, I have some ribs left over from dinner yesterday and beets. I'll have some banana pancakes for a bedtime snack.

One problem right now is my weight. I'm down to 120 and I'm 5'9". My energy is still good. I'm pretty active (I run, climb, hike and ski a lot) so it's hard to get enough calories on this diet. I'm hoping that the weight loss will slow down soon as I add more foods in. Things finally settled down this weekend after the spinach got rejected last week and I tried avocado. So far so good with the avocado. Avocado has lots of calories so that would be great if I could eat it.

Try getting more fats like butter (or ghee if you can't tolerate dairy), coconut oil, olives, olive oil, nut butters (when your intestines are better), fattier cuts of meat and yes, avocados!

And don't forget to grease the pan. :D

natural peanut butter, butter, CHEESE, meat.... I find it very easy to get too many calories on this diet, so keep working at it. keep snacking all day long.

My adventure last night was ketchup. I wasn't pretty, lol. I am SOOOOOO not a cook. It only has a couple of ingredients, how can anyone mess that up, lol. It tastes pretty good, but it never got thick. I boiled that puppy for hours (okay, really only 2), and it never got thick, so I just threw in come honey and called it a night. :D I did use some on my hamburger patty this morning...it is tastey.

Did I mention my try at mayo. I can't try that again until I buy more oil.:lol::lol:

corinne Apprentice

Good suggestions. I'll starting adding some more fats ie olive oil and ghee and avocados. I can't tolerate dairy at all (no cheese etc.) or nuts (almond butter and peanut butter are so far problems).

So you must be eating the same stuff as me. I can't have nuts and nut butter, and I won't try and add that until waaaaaaaay later in the diet. I can't. And I can't have dairy either, any kind.

Hi everyone on the SCD diet.

Well, if you're out there right now, I have a concern. I had problems with something that I ate on Saturday night. So, for the past four days, I have had nothing but juice/water, homemade chicken soup, carrots, and hamburger pattys, homemade of course. And although the gas has stopped, my stomach is still HUGE. I mean, it's just not going down this time. I don't know if I should add another food in because I don't have pain, or should I stay on the intro. diet until my stomach goes down? Or is this diet not working for me? I'm kind of mad about this. I mean, I look like I'm pregnant, even when I wake up, and I'm not eating anything bad.

Help!

Egads! That's four days already so I think it would be safe to add another food but I think I'd make sure it was really easily digestible. I've been having D again, but I tried pears last night anyway...I poached them (I guess that's what it's called) in a little diluted grape juice. It's so darned hard to know when to add stuff isn't it!? I think in the book she said to give it a month...and in fact I think I remember reading that even after that there will be setbacks. It's hard not to get discouraged though.

Thanks for replying Donna. Can you believe I just wrote about 3 paragraphs and accidently deleted it!!! Ahhh......anyway, I seem a little better today because I took out salt last night (I was having a lot to make up for any other tasty things I can't eat, or add to things like carrots).....and also, I've been drinking, LOTS OF JUICE, ALL DAY......more than water actually. I dilute it, but I always cheat and put a little bit more juice in there.....and I wasn't drinking water alone, if anything, I had to have juice. So maybe that was slowing things down inside of me? Who knows......but I know it's def. just water retention because I don't have gas or anything. Anyway, we'll see how the days progress. And yeah, you're right.....we're supposed to give it a month. I know I'm going to stick to this diet no matter what because 1. it has helped a lot of things so far and 2. this is kind of like my last resort!

Anyway, do you, or anyone know if you can retain water in your legs? Because when I retain water, not only does my stomach pertrude out like 10ft. (haha, okay a little sarcasim), but I feel like my thighs are also very puffy. Maybe it's just in my head, but I just don't feel like myself when I'm bloated. Ugh....

Oh and Donna, I told you about the pearl acidopholis pills. Don't get them. There is pectin in them, an additive that isn't allowed, and I didn't know until yesterday. I was taking them, so I could be having problems from that, too.

But yeah, this diet is hard when we don't have Elaine to call or write like people could do when she was 'around'. I wonder if someone took her place that we could write to.......?

In the study linked above, the little girl switched to a gluten free diet and gained enough weight that that fat pad was replenished and surgery was not needed.   Here's the full article link... Hello, @Jordan Carlson, So glad you're feeling better.   Tecta is a proton pump inhibitor.  PPI's also interfere with the production of the intrinsic factor needed to absorb Vitamin B12.  Increasing the amount of B12 you supplement has helped overcome the lack of intrinsic factor needed to absorb B12. Proton pump inhibitors also reduce the production of digestive juices (stomach acids).  This results in foods not being digested thoroughly.  If foods are not digested sufficiently, the vitamins and other nutrients aren't released from the food, and the body cannot absorb them.  This sets up a vicious cycle. Acid reflux and Gerd are actually symptoms of producing too little stomach acid.  Insufficient stomach acid production is seen with Thiamine and Niacin deficiencies.  PPI's like Tecta also block the transporters that pull Thiamine into cells, preventing absorption of thiamine.  Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are difficulty swallowing, gagging, problems with food texture, dysphagia. Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are symptoms of ADHD and anxiety.  Vyvanse also blocks thiamine transporters contributing further to Thiamine deficiency.  Pristiq has been shown to work better if thiamine is supplemented at the same time because thiamine is needed to make serotonin.  Doctors don't recognize anxiety and depression and adult onset ADHD as early symptoms of Thiamine deficiency. Stomach acid is needed to digest Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in fruits and vegetables.  Ascorbic acid left undigested can cause intestinal upsets, anxiety, and heart palpitations.   Yes, a child can be born with nutritional deficiencies if the parents were deficient.  Parents who are thiamine deficient have offspring with fewer thiamine transporters on cell surfaces, making thiamine deficiency easier to develop in the children.  A person can struggle along for years with subclinical vitamin deficiencies.  Been here, done this.  Please consider supplementing with Thiamine in the form TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) which helps immensely with dysphagia and neurological symptoms like anxiety, depression, and ADHD symptoms.  Benfotiamine helps with improving intestinal health.  A B Complex and NeuroMag (a magnesium supplement), and Vitamin D are needed also.
    • knitty kitty
@pothosqueen, Welcome to the tribe! You'll want to get checked for nutritional deficiencies and start on supplementation of B vitamins, especially Thiamine Vitamin B 1.   There's some scientific evidence that the fat pad that buffers the aorta which disappears in SMA is caused by deficiency in Thiamine.   In Thiamine deficiency, the body burns its stored fat as a source of fuel.  That fat pad between the aorta and digestive system gets used as fuel, too. Ask for an Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test to look for thiamine deficiency.  Correction of thiamine deficiency can help restore that fat pad.   Best wishes for your recovery!   Interesting Reading: Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome in a 6-Year-Old Girl with Final Diagnosis of Celiac Disease https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31089433/#:~:text=Affiliations,tissue and results in SMAS.
    • trents
Wow! You're pretty young to have a diagnosis of SMA syndrome. But youth also has its advantages when it comes to healing, without a doubt. You might be surprised to find out how your health improves and how much better you feel once you eliminate gluten from your diet. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that, when gluten is consumed, triggers an attack on the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestines where all our nutrition is absorbed. It is made up of billions of tiny finger-like projections that create a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the person with celiac disease, unchecked gluten consumption generates inflammation that wears down these fingers and, over time, greatly reduces the nutrient absorbing efficiency of the small bowel lining. This can generate a whole host of other nutrient deficiency related medical problems. We also now know that the autoimmune reaction to gluten is not necessarily limited to the lining of the small bowel such that celiac disease can damage other body systems and organs such as the liver and the joints and cause neurological problems.  It can take around two years for the villous lining to completely heal but most people start feeling better well before then. It's also important to realize that celiac disease can cause intolerance to some other foods whose protein structures are similar to gluten. Chief among them are dairy and oats but also eggs, corn and soy. Just keep that in mind.
