Second opinion on lab results?

Inkandpaper

Recommended Posts

Inkandpaper Newbie

I just got lab results from my daughter’s labs, and the Pediatric gastroenterologist indicated that they show she does not have celiac.  Before I move on to look for other diagnoses, I would like a second opinion on the lab results.

Symptoms:

- Serious constipation

- Stomach pain

- She isn’t growing much at all; in the last 2.5 years she’s gained about 2 lbs.  The only time her growth charts didn’t look alarming was when she was on the gaps diet (which is gluten free, among other things) for two years.

Lab results:

- Iga, serum: 62 mg/dL (standard range 50-250 mg/dL)

- TTG Iga: <2.9 units (standard range <20 units)

Thank you!

Sorry, that should read <1.9 units for TTG Iga.

Welcome to the forum.

How old is your daughter?

Has she had an upper GI with biopsy to check for the condition of the small bowel villi? The blood tests sometimes don't tell the whole story.

Has she had a colonoscopy? Could there be a partial blockage in there?

Gluten sensitivity instead of celiac disease?

Does she get enough fiber in her diet and drink plenty of fluids?

Low magnesium levels?

Has she had a CBC and a CMP?

Thanks for your response.  My daughter is 6.    She has not had a endoscopy or colonoscopy.  In addition to the labs I posted, she also had a basic metabolic panel, TSH, and Free T4 (all in normal range).

She gets plenty of fiber.  Her water intake isn’t great but not terrible either.  I have supplemented with magnesium with no results (even an adult dosage of magnesium sulfate daily still only had her pooping every 3-4 days).

I would explore the option of an upper and lower GI with the doctors. I think docs are reluctant to do those on children but I'm sure it can be done. Maybe she has a kink in the bowel. Something is causing that abdominal pain. At her age I would not suspect Crohn's Disease.

Okay, this is a little personal but how's the atmosphere in your home? Sometimes people, especially children, will manifest stress/anxiety in the gut. Anal retentive?

I am sorry that your daughter is ill.  She did not get the complete celiac disease panel, which includes the DGP tests.  Those are better for younger children (and maybe even really old people, like me).  I test positive to only the DGP IgA and I am endoscopy/biopsy confirmed.  If my GI had not run the complete panel, my diagnosis would have been missed.  To further complicate the process, about 10% of celiacs are seronegative.

Do you have autoimmune running in your family?  Just running a a few thyroid tests does not indicate autoimmune.  My kid has a normal thyroid panel (as did I) but both of us have very elevated thyroid antibodies.  My kid is 19.

I would get a referral to a Ped GI.  At least push for the complete celiac disease panel from her PED or PCP.

do a CT scan of entire abdomen...  simple to do..

then get upper endoscopy...

Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have. It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.

@Martha Mitchell, your reaction to the lens implant with gluten sounds like it could be an allergic reaction rather than a celiac reaction. It is possible for a celiac to be also allergic to gluten as it is a protein component in wheat, barley and rye.

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!
