I’m still trying to get to the bottom of what’s causing my gastritis... my medical team doesn’t even Know, it could be stress or gluten or both.. I’ve been gluten free three weeks now and just now getting some relief from my gastritis pain.. I’ve had all sorts of tests done, all negative of other things that cause gastritis..and another thing is only the antrum(lower stomach near small intestine is affected by it). They only saw it here as they took biopsies from my whole stomach. Anyone else had the same experience ? Does this ever get better?

@Lyns5201,

Yes, I've had gastritis.  Endoscopy revealed small irritated spots in my stomach.  My spots healed.

I found that taking 1000 mg of Tryptophan helps me.  Tryptophan heals the stomach lining and intestines.  Our bodies can turn Tryptophan into other chemicals, serotonin and melatonin that also heal the digestive tract.

Tryptophan is available over the counter and on line.  This is the kind I order.  I take with meals and at bedtime.

Did the doctor verify you had gastritis ?do they know what caused it and have you also been diagnosed with celiacs ?do you think untreated celiacs and gastritis have a link ? I’m just trying to figure this out tired of being in pain... also how long did it take yours to heal up and did you take anything else for it?

Yes, I was given a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) but that only made my symptoms worse.  PPI's can cause continuing inflammation and damage.  Have your doctors prescribed you any medications?

Yes, I think Celiac (no "s" on the end) and gastritis are linked.  Yes, I have two genes for Celiac.

In addition to the tryptophan, I  take Allithiamine, a form of Vitamin B1.  This is the brand I take...

Allithiamine helps the digestive tract heal and function better.

I’m eating and drinking very plain,no dairy or gluten or soy. Things like potatoes, broth, chicken.cooked carrots, water,gluten-free bread and honey peanut butter so there’s not a lot of added sugar in it,almond milk, almond yogurt , sweet potatoes, ground Turkey, rice

And yes, they have me on protonix, but I quit taking it a few days ago in fear it’s making my symptoms even worse I’m scared acid rebound will come any minute now...also on a meds for nerves, they think my nerves in my stomach are too sensitive...and I’m on carafate before every meal and before bed as it’s supposed to heal the stomach..

Lysine is used to treat stomach ulcers.  It promotes healing of the stomach lining.

Have you been tested for a B12 deficiency?

The intrinsic factor needed for B12 absorption is made in the stomach.  B12 helps reduce that stomach lining inflammation.  You may want to try a sublingual B12 supplement that dissolves in the mouth and is absorbed into the bloodstream without needing that intrinsic factor.

Yes it does I drink Camile tea and that help with the pain and lemon balm . It's because you have eaten gluten for so long that it's going take some time but it gradually get better.

@Lyns5201

You may try removing potatoes from your diet for a while.  Potatoes contain chemicals called solanines that cause leaky gut syndrome.

Have you been checked for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth?

Yes I have, they said it was normal.and my b12 is ok too. Also I have been on a ppi quite some time though,I know these can effect the amount of vitamin absorption...

Do you have celiacs and have also been confirmed to have gastritis through scope ?and what kind if so ?? How did you heal yours ?

Have you Googled the side effects of Carafate?

constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting,

upset stomach,

stomach pain,

indigestion,

gas, dry mouth,

sleep problems (insomnia),

dizziness,

drowsiness,

spinning sensation,

headache, back pain

Aren't these symptoms similar to what you have been experiencing?

You may need to discuss these symptoms with your doctor.  Perhaps discuss tryptophan, lysine and thiamine supplementation instead.

Best of luck.

I just got the results from my endoscopy and it said I had inactive chronic gastritis. I have become sensitive to almost every food I usually eat. I have been gluten free for several months now.  I firmly believe that my confirmed celiac and gluten intake caused the gastritis.  I am taking liquid Gaviscon (OTC) and Bentyl (prescription) for the pain.  I have lost 9 pounds this month because all I can eat is Chicken and peas.  Stress is also very prevalent in my life.  I am praying this new treatment will work.  You are not alone, just wanted to let you know that.

Make sure the Gaviscon, Bentyl and any ofther meds/supplements you are taking are gluten free.

Hang in there.  I am now 5 months gluten-free.  I am completely off all my gastro-intestinal medications and my diabetes is reversing.  From 3 medications for diabetes, I am now down to one (metformin) and I have to reduce my dose because of blood sugar lows.  I had my first normal glucose reading in a blood test even though I had eaten.  The first time in 11 years.  I was 69 when I was diagnosed as celiac and eliminating gluten is making all my misdiagnosed symptoms go away.  Find an integrative physician.  They will treat you as a whole person and believe you.  It made a huge positive change in my life.

Thank you for the good advice. Gaviscon and all forms of Bentley are gluten free, that was a good idea to check those.

Did you personally experience gastritis and feel it was related to celiac and got better on a gluten free diet?

I am not really doing any better.  The gastroenterologist told me to take antacids if I need to for my stomach but did not give me anything specific, I have tried Tums and Gaviscon but then found out Gaviscon interacts with one of my medicines so I had to stop taking it.  I have lost another 3 pounds in the last couple weeks, fortunately I have plenty of extra!  My main diet is still chicken & peas and I will not give up my m&ms since I cannot eat much of anything else.  I am trying to drink more water too.  I am at a point where I just take it day by day.  Thanks for checking in with me, it is nice to know that people care!

Regular M&Ms have no gluten containing ingredients but that doesn't rule out cross contamination in processing and handling as they may be produced on machinery that processes other products with gluten. Also, there may be other ingredients in M&Ms that aggravate your tummy such as emulsifiers.

I had esophagitis, gastritis, colitis, diverticulitis, Barrett's esophagus, and a hiatal hernia with gall bladder polyps and gallstones.  I spent over 10 years going to a gastroenterologist and taking tons of medicine and undergoing regular endo-colonoscopies.  I switched to an integrative physician who spent a year and a half helping me and who finally noted my malabsorption problems, which lead to the positive celiac test.   Since going gluten-free all my symptoms have ceased and I've been able to stop taking all my gastro-intestinal medicines.  No more reflux and gall bladder pain!  I am hopeful that my next endo-colonoscopy will document the improvement.  I believe the gluten intolerance and my continued eating of gluten all my life caused my celiac disease and diabetes (which is also improving and hopefully will continue to go away).  So yes is the answer,  I think all kids need to be screened for gluten intolerance early in life.  I wish I had.  It would have eliminated all the arguments I had with my parents as a kid over foods that I refused to eat because they made me sick (literally).  They just thought I was a brat.

Is the gastritis pain Completely gone ?if so how long did it take for you to find relief from it on a gluten free diet?mine will hurt so bad and burn and feels raw almost but I’m only a month gluten free.

Maybe you just have gastritis? I've been taking antacids for years for gastritis, since before my celiac diagnosis. Nothing I eat makes it worse or better. I'm an anxious person so that could be a factor.

Oh I take pepcid in the morning and at night, every day. I had been taking ranitidine but something happened with that the other year. I really preferred it. Tums is just a bandaid sort of antacid, it isn't very strong.

I started getting relief the first month I was gluten-free, which was about 6 weeks prior to my celiac diagnosis and yes, my blood antigen tests were positive even with the gluten-free diet.  Once I was diagnosed, I tapered off the gastro meds.  I've taken them all and was taking prescription level doses of both lansoprazol and pepcid (which is basically twice the dose recommended on the bottle) with tums for the break throughs every night.  I got off them all with no ill affect.  I have had two reflux episodes in the last 6 months, both following suspected gluten intake (I just had to eat those french fries, not thinking the oil was contaminated by the gluten from the breading on the fried chicken, and forgetting to tell the waiter I couldn't handle the gravy).  I can now tell when I have gluten because I get gall bladder type pain and a headache, luckily no reflux. I am now able to eat tomato sauce and drink red wine, which used to be triggers for reflux,   I even got rid of the wedge I was sleeping on.  I used to have headaches every day, but they are rare now.  But you really need to look for a gastroenterologist who treats celiac patients.  They understand, while other gastro specialists are focused on ulcers and cancer and surgical solutions.  You need one who understands the role of nutrition and one who knows how to do small intestine endoscopy with biopsies.  My old gastro treated me for over 10 years with pills and never tested me for celiac and I didn't get any better.  My new gastro says it may take up to 2 years to eliminate the effects of gluten on your system, but my symptoms seem to have resolved much sooner.

Good point about the M&Ms, I didn’t think about anything else theY might come in contact with.

They contain emulsifiers and food coloring as well and who knows what else.

Ferritin levels.  And see what your hemoglobin looks like too, that will tell you if you are anemic?  You can have 'low normal' levels that will not be flagged by blood tests.  I had 'low normal' levels, my lab reading was. c12, just over what was considered normal, but I had small benign lesion on my tongue, and sometimes a sore mouth, and a consultant maxillofacial ordered an iron infusion for me as he felt my levels were too low and if he  raised them to 40, it would help.   Because you are not feeling 100% it might be worth looking at your levels, then discussing with your doctor if they are low normal.  But I stress, don't supplement iron without your levels being monitored, too much is dangerous.

Hi Katht -  I sympathize with your struggles in following a gluten-free diet and lifestyle. I found out that I had Celiac Disease a few months before I turned 70. I just turned 89 and it has taken me almost 20 years to attain a fairly normal intestinal  function. I also lost a lot of weight, down to 100 lb. down from about 140 lb. What Trents wrote you was very true for me. I am still elimination foods from my diet. One person suggested you keep a food diary and that is a good idea but it is probably best just to do an elimination diet. There are several ne and maybe one for celiacs. I used one for a while and started with plain rice and zucchini and then added back other foods to see if I reacted or not. That helped a great deal but what I did not realise that it would only very small amounts of some foods to cause inflammation in my intestine. Within the last few years I have stopped eating any trace amounts of hot peppers, corn and soy(mostly in supplements) and nuts, (the corn in Tylenol was giving me stomach aches and the nuts were causing foot pains). Starting an elimination diet with white rice is better than brown rice that has some natural toxins. In addition it is very important to drink sufficient plain water. You can find out how much to drink for your height and weight online. I do have difficulty drinking 48 ounces of water but just recently have found an electrolyte supplement that helps me stay well hydrated, Adding the water and electrolytes may reduce muscle cramps and gag spams you wrote about. . Also buy some anti-gluten enzyme capsules to take with meals. I use GliadinX advertised here. These are a lot of things to do at one time as they reflect my 20 years of experience. I hope you do what you can manage to do over time. Good luck and take care.

Hi all !! Did anyone ever get prescribed methylprednisone steroids for inflammation of stomach and intestines?  Did it work ??  Thank you !!
    • cristiana
Hi Colleen Are you supplementing B12/having injections? I have learned recently that sometimes when you start addressing a B12 deficiency, it can temporarily make your symptoms worse.  But it is important not to stop the treatment.  Regarding your problems with anxiety, again that is another symptom of a B12 deficiency.   I didn't know what anxiety was until it hit me like a train several months before gastrointestinal issues began, so I can certainly relate.   Two books which helped me hugely were At Last A Life by Paul David (there is a website you can look up) and The Depression Cure: The Six-Step Programme to Beat Depression Without Drugs by Dr Steve Llardi.  Although his book is aimed at people who have depression, following the principals he sets out was so helpful in lessening my anxiety.  Llardi suggests we need to focus on getting enough: - physical exercise - omega-3 fatty acids - natural sunlight exposure - restorative sleep - social connectedness - meaningful, engaging activity   ... and we should feel a lot better. That is not to stay you must stop taking medication for depression or anxiety if you have been prescribed it, but adopting the changes Dr Llardi sets out in the book should really help. Can I just ask two more questions:  1) you say that you are B12 deficient, did they test your iron levels too?  If not, you really ought to be checked for deficiency and, 2) did they check your thyroid function, as an overactive thyroid can be cause rapid heartbeat and a lot of coeliacs have thyroid issues?
