Has anyone had a blister type rash with celiac?

Could be dermatitis herpetiformis ("DH") which is a classic expression of celiac disease and which has no other known cause.

Yes!! had it earlier this year (thought it was hives, lasted over 2 weeks) along with numerous other things (stye in my eye, athletes foot) that I had NEVER had before in my life.  Explains a lot.

Have you been tested for DH or celiac disease and have you been confirmed to have either by formal diagnosis?

Natalie youds Newbie

I have been diagnosed with celiac disease yes.

Are you following a strict gluten free diet?

I’ve had that reaction, but it is from sugar for me

I am following a gluten free diet yes.  I was thinking maybe I am lacking in vitamins I was very low on Vitamin d when I got diagnosed.

Vitamin and mineral deficiencies are very common, especially in those who are newly diagnosed. Are you taking supplements that include a B Complex, as well as D? Have you had your levels re-checked?

@Natalie youds,

"Blister rash hands and feet"

Could you describe your rash a little more?

Have you compared your rash to pictures of DH?

Is the rash on the top of your hands and feet or on your plans and soles of your feet?

Does the rash get worse when exposed to the sun?

I used to get blisters on my fingers, that itch, and extremely itchy fingers after exposure to sugar.  Then the skin dries out and breaks open into sores... this part can last up to months, depending on how much sugar or over what period of time. I still get this today if I am inadvertently exposed to sugar.

Yes. Mine was weird though because it did not present itself above the skin. It felt more like I was walking on blistered skin but the blisters were not visible and went away after a day.

Sometimes people with celiac disease (and other diseases) get eye styes and athlete's foot

No offense intended but I wouldn't be so quick to blame eye styes and AF on celiac disease.  Not every medical problem in life is related to celiac disease.  Sometimes "stuff" just happens unrelated to celiac disease.   Esp. styes and AF which happen to so many people ALL. THE. TIME.   Sometimes, things are just a coincidence and happen after diagnosis with celiac disease.

true, and very possible...it's just that all these things happened in the months leading up to diagnosis...had never happened prior and has not happened since I went gluten free

I strongly recommend 2 dedicated gluten free (gluten-free) restaurants in my area (East Bay of San Francisco Bay Area) (2025) -- Life is Sweet Bakery and Café in Danville. I've been a few times with friends and tried multiple entrees and salads. All very good and worth having again. I've also tried a number of their bakery goods. All extremely good (not just "good for gluten-free"). https://lifeissweetbakeryandcafe.com/ -- Kitara Kitchen in Albany (they have additional locations). I've been once and had the "Buritto Bowl". Six individual items plus a sauce. Outstanding. Not just "for gluten-free", but outstanding in its own right. Vibrant flavors, great textures. I can't wait to go back. https://www.kitava.com/location/kitava-albany/

I'm 67 and have been celiac for 17yrs. I had cataract surgery and they put a gluten lens in my eye. Through a lot of research, I found out about MMA acrylic...it contains gluten. It took 6 months for me to find a DR that would remove it and replace it with a gluten-free lens . I have lost some vision in that eye because of it . I also go to a prosthodontist instead of a regular dentist because they are specialized. He has made me a night guard and a few retainers with no issues... where my regular dentist didn't care. I have really bad reactions to gluten and I'm extremely sensitive, even to CC. I have done so much research on gluten-free issues because of these Drs that just don't care. Gluten is in almost everything shampoo, lotion, food, spices, acrylic, medication even communion wafers! All of my Drs know and believe me I remind them often.... welcome to my world!

If this applies geographically, in the U.K., physicians will often declare a diagnosis of celiac disease based on the TTG-IGA antibody blood test alone if the score is 10x normal or greater, which your score is. There is very little chance the endoscopy/biopsy will contradict the antibody blood test.
    • JoJo0611
TTG IgA reference range 0.0 to 14.9 KU/L
    • trents
What was the reference range for that test? Each lab uses different reference ranges so a raw score like that makes it difficult to comment on. But it looks like a rather large number.
