Hi Jane, I don’t think my stomach has ever gotten back to normal but I wish you well! I’ve been on a gluten-free diet for over 20 years and I’m very strict no cheating! I eat all meals at home , home cooked and all gluten free, I’m on a low fodmap diet as well! Some Celiacs are whats referred to as hard gainers meaning it’s hard to gain weight or even maintain it and I’m one of those! I also have a high metabolism even at the age of 53 so whatever I eat even high in protein and calories it is a struggle to gain and or maintain weight unfortunately, I also go to the gym regularly and it’s still almost impossible for me to gain weight! I even add in protein shakes at 30grams of protein as well and still I won’t gain! My heaviest was 165lbs. prior to Celiac Diagnosis in 2003 at the time of diagnosis I was down to 117lbs. It took approx 4 yrs to get my Celiac Diagnosis back then! I’m up to 145lbs. now but I normally don’t go higher than 149-150lbs. then I can drop back down to 140lbs. just like that doing nothing different! So I fluctuate between 140-150lbs. I’d like to get up to 185lbs which was my goal prior to falling ill before the Celiacs Diagnosis but trust me when I say I try! I’m just a person that has always found it hard to gain weight/muscle and keep it on! Good Luck☘️I know the feeling! The Struggles Real!🤙

Be careful with the Haagen Dazs. As a recently-diagnosed celiac, you might not realize which foods you're cross-reacting with. I'm much more recently-diagnosed than you, but am already aware of two of my own cross-reactions since I had been on an elimination diet with continual food challenges over the last year or so.

Dairy is an issue for many celiacs, because casein (one of the two main proteins in milk) has a sequence within it that is very similar to gliadin (the component of gluten we react to). What this means is that for some celiacs, the same antibodies that react to gluten react to dairy. I've read studies where the cross-reactivity with casein was as high as 20%.

The non-dairy Haagen Dazs is not without its own issues, despite being gluten-free, because it's oat-based, and oats are similarly a food a subset of celiacs react to directly (as high as 10-15% in some studies).

So if you're eating dairy or oats and are continuing to suffer celiac symptoms including weight loss on a GFD, it may be worth eliminating them and seeing if you notice an improvement.

@Scott Adams Thank you so much for this thoughtful and encouraging reply 💛 It really helps me feel less alone navigating all of this! I’ve definitely been strict gluten-free, but I’ll admit — in the beginning, I honestly knew nothing about cross-contamination 😅 so it’s very possible my gut is still healing from that. I feel very abnormal because I am not a typical celiac or a typical Crohn's, so it makes me feel very stuck.

Hi still the same unfortunately, they had to cancel my colonoscopy due to my trapped nerve , I'm awaiting some kind of scan , it was the nurses who  told me to refuse and asked a docter , and I was told to cancel and go back to my consultant , I think because my sciatic nerve is compressed between my herniated discs , the prep was enough I could handle , but the colonoscopy itself , they advised me to seek something different ,due to the position I had to be in and the movements , so I will update Wen I know more , thankyou for asking appreciated 🤗

It sounds like you're navigating a complex situation with your celiac disease, and it’s understandable to feel confused by the GI world! While celiac disease typically affects the duodenum and proximal small intestine, it’s possible for inflammation to extend to the ileum, especially in cases of more severe or longstanding damage. Since your tTG-IgA remains elevated despite a strict gluten-free diet, this could indicate ongoing healing or subtle gluten exposure. The ileal inflammation might still be related to celiac, though it’s good your doctor is ruling out other conditions like Crohn’s, given the nonspecific biopsy findings. Some people with celiac do report ileal involvement, particularly if they have refractory disease or delayed healing. Keeping close follow-up with your GI and possibly revisiting your diet for hidden gluten sources could help. Hang in there—it’s a journey, and you’re doing great by staying proactive!

hi, how are u now? any answers?
    • mermaidluver22
I have biopsy-confirmed celiac disease and have been strictly gluten-free, but my tTG-IgA is still elevated, so I know I'm still healing. I recently had a capsule endoscopy that showed small erosions and inflammation only in the distal ileum — nothing in the upper small intestine. My GI isn’t calling it Crohn’s yet because biopsies showed only mild, non-specific inflammation with no chronic features. Has anyone experienced celiac impacting their ileum as well? the gi world is so confusing! thank u ❤️
