I saw "Supersize Me"!!

Even now...after all I've learned...I watched that movie and all I could think about was how much I missed those freakin Big Macs.

Man...did I want one!!

Just a pop-in, reading along a little bit, but impossibly far behind....just had to respond. I LOVED Supersize Me, watched it a couple of years ago, and I DO think it should be required viewing for HS students and parents of young kids. It's shocking! I did love the barfing scene, about 20 minutes in, did you not love that? :P

and hello to all. :) I can't follow any more, will just pop in to say hi occasionally.

Susan...yeah...Supersize Me was very entertaining.....and of course informative...in a shocking way. :o

This is totally off topic but is anyone else stunned and terribly saddened by the death of Anna Nicole??

OMG...I am just really heartbroken for everything thats occured and for everyone involved. I've always liked her.....no matter what she's just always seemed "likeable" and genuine.

Its all tragic. My heart broke for her when her son died only 3 days after her daughter was born. She is not much older than me.....but her life has been filled with turmoil.....and now she is dead. :(

It might not be shocking to everyone given the way shes led her life...but I'm still stunned by the news.

Rachel -- I was shocked as well, but I have notbeen following the news a lot recently, and was not aware of the baby, nor of all the plastic surgery she had had. SHe did not even look like herself at the end! It was sad for sure.

Wanted to let everyone know what is going on.

Last night I got the number to the hospice my dad is staying in. I called them and had arranged to have my brother and myself call this morning to talk to him since I was told that was his most coherant time of day.

He had slipped into a stage 1 coma yesterday afternoon I think it was.

Got a phone call that he passed this morning about 4:35 am.

I'm doing ok right this minute. Who know what the day will bring. On the one hand is sadness, on the other is thankfulness that he doesn't have to go through the pain of his cancer anymore.

Thanks for being there to talk to everyone.

Andrea,

I'm so sorry. {{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}}

He's in a better place now.....he's not suffering anymore. It seems this is where he wanted to be. He fought the fight but he knew it was time for him to be with God.

Well actually I dont know if he was a religious man but even if these werent his thoughts...God was still waiting for him. :)

I hope you're doing ok. Is Mitch home with you? I will call you sometime today after my appt. with Scott.

Ryan....I didnt know she'd had plastic surgery??

In all of the more recent photos I've seen she wasnt all "done up"...no make-up....so she looked less glamorous but I didnt know she'd had work done. Although in one picture I thought maybe her nose looked different.

She didnt need any work done...she was always pretty....regardless of where her weight was at.

It seems like its been on cable news non-stop since it happened....alot going on with the paternity of her baby girl. The baby is adorable....I feel bad for her...she has lost her brother and her mother in her first 6 months of life. :(

Andrea; Sorry for your loss, but he is free of pain and fought the good fight.

Everyone grieves in their own way but be sure to let yourself grieve. If not it can be bottled up and cause physical problems later. you are such an intelligent person I am sure that will not happen to you. Prayers for you and all! evie

I think that what is most tragic is how she did lead her life. How she handled her daughter's care is an example--what was she (Anna Nicole) doing in Florida when her 5-month-old was in another country? :blink I'm sorry, but what kind of mother does that?

I wouldn't be surprised, though, if both she and her son were murdered, especially as they didn't find evidence of recreational drugs in her system (which surprised me).

Mitch is home. :) He's my physical rock. He lost his dad 21 years ago to Lou Gehrigs disease.

I'll be home.

My comfort is in the fact that dad's not suffering anymore. It's the loss of the ability to call him and say hi, to know he's always there. Since he lived so far away it wasn't as if he was a constant presence physically in my life and he wasn't a big talker. I was always closest to him growing up and I have a lot of fond memories. His side of the family is very long lived. He's the youngest that has died. His wife's oldest daughter (she lives in Washington) was flying in this morning so at least she can help her mother out. Another friend had lost her husband to cancer last year and now dad. It's a very close knit group down there. Everyone down there used to live up here and we've all known each other for probably 30 years or more, although I wasn't close to them.

I have chronic swollen glands as well. Everything has improved over the whole 4 years....all of the dietary changes I've made helps tremendously. I havent needed pain meds at all for the past 2 years. I relied on them daily prior to changing my diet.....in the end I'm sure it wasnt helping my immune system or my gut taking the meds everyday.

I believe in my case that its definately something infectious causing the symptoms. I think its probably always the case when there are multiple food intolerances involved.

For the past year or so I've felt that its not the foods themselves that are problems for me...but more likely stuff *in* the foods....chemicals, molds, etc.

Definately something infectious which took adavantage when my defenses were down....it all happened very quickly. I suppose it could be candida but from what I know candida prefers the mouth, vagina, gut....I'm sure ther sinus as well. I've never had thrush or a "womanly" yeast infection so I'm thinking it might be unlikely candida is the culprit in my sinus.

Aspergillus prefers the lungs and sinus.....its a mold rather than a yeast. I'm thinking it might be Aspergillus. <_<

It would be nice to try out the meds and see if they help but I gotta wait for the bloodwork and the results.

I'm probably in the minority on this board but I'm from the camp that believes autoimmune stuff, leaky gut, food intolerance, Fibromyalgia, even the female problems....are all caused by infectious "invaders" in our bodies.

Last night on the news they announced that they *think* they have discovered the cause of IBS. :o

They were saying that they believe its due to bacteria overgrowth....the bacteria which is found in the colon overgrows into the small intestine and causes IBS symptoms.

Obviously mainstream is WAY behind on this.....but at least they are catching up. :)

Maybe in another 10 years or so they might startt acknowleding Candida overgrowth as well.

Dear Rachel,

I completely agree with you on the autoimmune issues. There is usually some elusive invader no one knows about. Regular doctors have no idea. They often refuse to believe the truth. How can you cure anyone with a closed mind? IBS is miserable. My brother and mom both have it bad. Of course, I told them they may need to give up gluten as well, and naturally giving up pastries is not an option for either of them. They have no idea how much better it could be. If they want gastric cancer, fine! Not me! All you can do is warn people!

I have burning in my nose and it itches on the inside. It can drive you crazy! I am allergic to dogs and we have one. So, that may be the cause instead of fungus, but who knows? However, to my knowledge, the air vents have not been cleaned in nearly an eternity. I would probably feel much better if I got out of this house.

It is so sad that doctors neglect important issues like Candida. I wrote an essay on it for school because I found the pathology so fascinating. Once it gets in its mycelial form, you are in trouble! I have not eaten mushrooms or yeast for months, but am terribly addicted for sugar. I also have difficulty stopping myself from peanut butter. I need to cool that stuff. It makes me sick a lot because it is high in fat. After having a cholecystectomy, you cannot overdo it.

Sincerely,

No, there will be no service. They are having a small get together but nothing official. He is going to be cremated. This summer his wife's brother will be bringing his ashes up to the Oregon coast (I forget where). We'll meet him there at that time.

My brother lives about 3 hours north of us.

Andrea,

So sorry for your loss :( . Be compassionate with yourself in your time of grieving. I'm glad to hear you have so much family near by and that you can support each other.

My personal experience is that people's spirits will hang around shortly after their bodies die. It depends on the person how long it is, but you can still communicate with your Dad at this time. You may not notice him answering back, but if you pay attention (and turn off your mind), you may.

I dont think theres any question as far as her love as a mother. Shes always been a very loving mother even if she didnt make the wisest choices. I'm not clear on all the details but I believe it was her intention to stay in the Bahamas....to live there with her daughter.

I think she might have been in the US because of the legal proceedings regarding paternity of her daughter. I know they were wanting to get DNA samples which she was not willing to provide. For whatever reason, she wanted people to believe her lawyer was the father...which I dont think was the case.

I was also surprised there were no drugs in her system. I thought shed be on them to numb her pain.

I think she might have been poisoned or died from a combination of prescription drugs?? They said she was sick with some stomach illness and very high fever for about 3 days before she died and she was wanting to get back to the Bahamas to be with her daughter. I believe she was a very loving mother...which is why it broke my heart when her son died. She loved that boy to pieces...he was her everything. :(

We've got to run the van in tomorrow for service on Monday and all cram into the metro to come home.

Anytime today or tomorrow morning or evening would be fine. I think we'll go down in the afternoon but that may change. It's always a matter of figuring if we'd be back before nap time. Seth's big nap is in the late morning/early afternoon. If you can, maybe you could call today. That way you know we'll be home. :)

I'm looking forward to hearing about your appointment.

This summer his wife's brother will be bringing his ashes up to the Oregon coast (I forget where). We'll meet him there at that time.

Ah Andrea, I'm so sorry!!! The ashes to Oregon thing is very nice! I love that. I was a mess after my father died...it was horrible, but the neatest thing happened a few weeks later. I had a dream one night. I was standing in my grandfather's workshop (grandfather died many many years ago), and my dad came in and said "Don't worry, I'm happy and I'm okay!" That was all. It was so very real, and I remember it to this day, even more than 10 years later. The other neat thing that I believe was a gift from God was one day I picked up a little microcassette tape I had sitting around. I do that...I record my choir songs sometimes and then listen to them later...well I didn't know what was on this tape, so listened to it. Turned out it was the old tape from an old answering machine, and the first thing on it was me and my dad talking! He had called one night after I had gone to bed, so by the time I picked up the phone the answering machine had come on and since I was upstairs I couldn't turn it off so it recorded our conversation! When I got rid of the machine, I kept the tape (not even knowing what was on it) throwing it in a drawer! You'll have many wonderful memories of your father too!

This is totally off topic but is anyone else stunned and terribly saddened by the death of Anna Nicole??

Well, yes, shockingly, lol. I was surprised at how shocked I was. One of the first things I thought about was that how odd it was for her to die so soon after her son! Stunned is a good word, and yes I was a little sad. Somehow I wanted things to turn out for her...kind of like the underdog thing.

RACHEL!!!! OMG!!! We almost met today, lol. I went in for my bioset appointment, and I got the doctor this time. Since it was my first time with her, she was asking me a bunch of questions and one of them was "how did you hear about us." Okay, so out comes the standard, from my online friend Rachel. So she says, oh, I think she was here today and in fact I think you just missed her! I said, well is that Scott the Better Health Guy walking around (it sure looked like him from his website), and she said yes, and I said is he doing the ART thing today, and she said yes, so we figured out that it was you and I missed you by maybe an hour at most. I was actually there while you were but I went shopping since I got there so flippin early (around 11:30).

Nothing exciting from my BioSET appointment though...we did neurotransmitters today. I never got around to telling her what my biggest issue was. Halfway into the testing she asked me if I had bowel issues, to which I said yes, major, and she said she could tell cuz nearly all the vials she pulled out were for bowels!

AndreaB Contributor

Donna,

I was wondering if you and Rachel would met up there or not. :) Too bad you just missed each other.

The thing I've been struggling with is that I really wanted to be down there for my dad. Somehow I don't think he would have wanted me to see him as sick as he was. I wouldn't have gone down over Thanksgiving had he not granted permission. I'm glad his suffering is over. His wife's brother told me that they knew when he reached a certain point that that would be it. When things started happening Sunday night they knew that was the point.

We took a couple minutes of video when we got down there in November so we do have that. Mitch is recording that little bit for people. Dad didn't seem real comfortable with that so we didn't get anything else, no pictures. I was just focused on spending time with him.

Thank you all for your advice and the dermatitis herpetiformis article. The latter made me realise I had stopped taking my antihistamine, which I will restart today. The Dapsone has cleared the rash entirely but I still get quite a bit itching, absolutely nothing to see though. I know its notoriously hard to clear and its still relatively early days for me.  The iodine issue is very interesting. I do eat quite a bit of salt because I have Addison's disease and sodium retention is an issue. I also have autoimmune hypothyroidism, not sure how a low iodine diet would play into that? Because of my Addison's I am totally steroid dependent, I take steroids 4 x daily and cannot mount any defence against inflammation. I need to increase my meds for that. Now that I know what is wrong I can do just that if Im having a bad day. Life is very sweet, just so damn complicated sometimes! Hey ho, onwards. Thank you again for your advice.

So, essentially all of the nutrition in the food we eat is absorbed through the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestinal track that is damaged by celiac disease. This villous lining is composed of billions of finger-like projections that create a huge amount of surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the celiac person, when gluten is consumed, it triggers an autoimmune reaction in this area which, of course, generates inflammation. The antibodies connected with this inflammation is what the celiac blood tests are designed to detect but this inflammation, over time, wears down the finger-like projections of the villous lining. Of course, when this proceeds for an extended period of time, greatly reduces the absorption efficiency of the villous lining and often results in many and various nutrient deficiency-related health issues. Classic examples would be osteoporosis and iron deficiency. But there are many more. Low D3 levels is a well-known celiac-caused nutritional deficiency. So is low B12. All the B vitamins in fact. Magnesium, zinc, etc.  Celiac disease can also cause liver inflammation. You mention elevated ALP levels. Elevated liver enzymes over a period of 13 years was what led to my celiac diagnosis. Within three months of going gluten free my liver enzymes normalized. I had elevated AST and ALT. The development of sensitivities to other food proteins is very common in the celiac population. Most common cross reactive foods are dairy and oats but eggs, soy and corn are also relatively common offenders. Lactose intolerance is also common in the celiac population because of damage to the SB lining.  Eggs when they are scrambled or fried give me a gut ache. But when I poach them, they do not. The steam and heat of poaching causes a hydrolysis process that alters the protein in the egg. They don't bother me in baked goods either so I assume the same process is at work. I bought a plastic poacher on Amazon to make poaching very easy. All this to say that many of the issues you describe could be caused by celiac disease.

thank you so much for your detailed and extremely helpful reply!! I can say with absolute certainty that the less gluten containing products I've eaten over the past several years, the better I've felt.   I wasn't avoiding gluten, I was avoiding refined grains (and most processed foods) as well as anything that made me feel bad when I ate it. It's the same reason I gave up dairy and eggs- they make me feel ill.  I do have a bit of a sugar addiction lol so a lot of times I wasn't sure if it was the refined grains that I was eating - or the sugar. So from time to time I might have a cookie or something but I've learned how to make wonderful cookies and golden brownies with BEANS!! and no refined sugar - I use date paste instead. Pizza made me so ill- but I thought it was probably the cheese. I gave up pizza and haven't missed it. the one time I tried a slice I felt so bad I knew I'd never touch it again. I stopped eating wheat pasta at least 3 yrs ago- just didn't feel well after eating it. I tried chick pea pasta and a few others and discovered I like the brown rice pasta. I still don't eat a lot of pasta but it's nice for a change when I want something easy. TBH over the years I've wondered sometimes if I might be gluten intolerant but really believed it was not possible for me to have celiac disease. NOW I need to know for sure- because I'm in the middle of a long process of trying to find out why I have a high parathyroid level (NOT the thyroid- but rather the 4 glands that control the calcium balance in your body) I have had a hard time getting my vit D level up, my serum calcium has run on the low side of normal for many years... and now I am losing calcium from my bones and excreting it in my urine (some sort of renal calcium leak) Also have a high ALP since 2014. And now rapidly worsening bone density.  I still do not have a firm diagnosis. Could be secondary HPT (but secondary to what? we need to know) It could be early primary HPT. I am spilling calcium in my urine but is that caused by the high parathyroid hormone or is it the reason my PTH is high>? there are multiple feedback loops for this condition.    so I will keep eating the bread and some wheat germ that does not seem to bother me too much (it hasn't got enough gluten to use just wheat germ)    but I'm curious- if you don't have a strong reaction to a product- like me and wheat germ- does that mean it's ok to eat or is it still causing harm even if you don't have any obvious symptoms? I guess what you are saying about silent celiac makes it likely that you can have no symptoms and still have the harm... but geez! you'd think they'd come up with a way to test for this that didn't require you to consume something that makes you sick! I worry about the complications I've been reading about- different kinds of cancers etc. also wondering- are there degrees of celiac disease?  is there any correlation between symptoms and the amnt of damage to your intestines? I also need a firm diagnosis because I have an identical twin sister ... so if I have celiac, she has it too- or at least the genetic make up for having it. I did have a VERY major stress to my body in 2014-2016 time frame .. lost 50lbs in a short period of time and had severe symptoms from acute protracted withdrawal off an SSRI drug (that I'd been given an unethically high dose of, by a dr who has since lost his license)  Going off the drug was a good thing and in many ways my health improved dramatically- just losing 50lbs was helpful but I also went  off almost a dozen different medications, totally changed my diet and have been doing pretty well except for the past 3-4 yrs when the symptoms related to the parathyroid issue cropped up. It is likely that I had low vit D for some time and that caused me a lot of symptoms. The endo now tells me that low vit D can be caused by celiac disease so I need to know for sure! thank you for all that great and useful information!!!

Welcome, @catnapt! The most recent guidelines are the daily consumption of a minimum of 10g of gluten (about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of two weeks. But if possible stretching that out even more would enhance the chances of getting valid test results. These guidelines are for those who have been eating gluten free for a significant amount of time. It's called the "gluten challenge".  Yes, you can develop celiac disease at any stage of life. There is a genetic component but also a stress trigger that is needed to activate the celiac genes. About 30-40% of the general population possesses the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% of the general population actually develop celiac disease. For most with the potential, the triggering stress event doesn't happen. It can be many things but often it is a viral infection. Having said that, it is also the case that many, many people who eventually are diagnosed with celiac disease probably experienced the actual onset years before. Many celiacs are of the "silent" type, meaning that symptoms are largely missing or very minor and get overlooked until damage to the small bowel lining becomes advanced or they develop iron deficiency anemia or some other medical problem associated with celiac disease. Many, many are never diagnosed or are diagnosed later in life because they did not experience classic symptoms. And many physicians are only looking for classic symptoms. We now know that there are over 200 symptoms/medical problems associated with celiac disease but many docs are only looking for things like boating, gas, diarrhea. I certainly understand your concerns about not wanting to damage your body by taking on a gluten challenge. Your other option is to totally commit to gluten free eating and see if your symptoms improve. It can take two years or more for complete healing of the small bowel lining once going gluten free but usually people experience significant improvement well before then. If their is significant improvement in your symptoms when going seriously gluten free, then you likely have your answer. You would either have celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).

after several years of issues with a para-gland issue, my endo has decided it's a good idea for me to be tested for celiac disease. I am 70 yrs old and stunned to learn that you can get celiac this late in life. I have just gradually stopped eating most foods that contain gluten over the past several years- they just make me feel ill- although I attributed it to other things like bread spiking blood sugar- or to the things I ate *with* the bread or crackers etc   I went to a party in Nov and ate a LOT of a vegan roast made with vital wheat gluten- as well as stuffing, rolls and pie crust... and OMG I was so sick! the pain, the bloating, the gas, the nausea... I didn't think it would ever end (but it did) and I was ready to go the ER but it finally subsided.   I mentioned this to my endo and now she wants me to be tested for celiac after 2 weeks of being on gluten foods. She has kind of flip flopped on how much gluten I should eat, telling me that if the symptoms are severe I can stop. I am eating 2-3 thin slices of bread per day (or english muffins) and wow- it does make me feel awful. But not as bad as when I ate that massive amnt of vital wheat gluten. so I will continue on if I have to... but what bothers me is - if it IS celiac, it seems stupid for lack of a better word, to intentionally cause more damage to my body... but I am also worried, on the other hand, that this is not a long enough challenge to make the blood work results valid.   can you give me any insight into this please?   thank you
