Your little boy is such a doll! He is so cute! I understand you would not want to subject him to more problematic things. He is probably sensitive to quite a bit, too. You do all you can to protect your children from harm. It is not fair they have to deal with so much at a young age!

According to what you guys have taught me and what I have learned on my own doing research, she is a prime candidate, too! She has a white matter lesion in her brain that they could not determine the cause of. She has to use a walker at only 39 years old. Jacqui also suffers with memory problems, aphasia, migraines, body pain, stiffness, hoarseness, laryngitis, allergies, Celiac, and so much more Lyme-centric issues. I told her she should join this thread.

Salt is good for you. I love salty snacks! Can you get the Himalayan salt over the internet? Can you eat it on food instead of drinking the salt water? I doubt my dad would buy the salt, though. He would be like "We have salt!" "What is the difference?" I cannot even get groceries without him arguing with me about the food I buy! He is always like "What do you need that for?" :angry: It is so annoying! In the slight chance I do obtain the salt, what is the salt to water ratio if I need to take it that way only?

Thank you for the compliments on my smile! My teeth are going to rot out if I do not do something! I need to go to a TMJ specialist. Otherwise, that dentist is going to have to deal with the fact I do not have any teeth to fill cavities in! I have migraines from my wisdom teeth, I believe. The sinus pill I took finally knocked it for now. It will probably return, though. My situation is complex.

What you said about soy was interesting. I think people get soy happy. According to something I read, you should not overdo it. The best thing is to stay under 35 - 45 mg of Isoflavones per day. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. The carageenan is definitely not out of the question. I should get some soymilk with only the filtered water and and soy again. If I do a rotation diet, that can rule out the culprit.

The sauna story is so funny! I would have been crying and panicking probably. That is a situation I think I would freak out about. If no one was around especially, that would be a problem. I am pretty calm and collected with most situations, but my fear of enclosed spaces would make this one difficult.

Soy seems to mess up a lot of people. I do not know if it is the carageenan or what. However, all I can do is eliminate things and see how it goes! That should clear some of that up. At least I know it is gluten and dairy free.

What you said about the grains is not too surprising. I am a fan of "The Zone". I felt pretty good when I was on it. I thought about doing it again. It naturally balances blood sugar. Mine is always low.

As far as cookware is concerned, I am glad I can afford to buy a few things with my money. I will be able to get the cookware set of 4 and 3 frying pans! Yay! Who would have thought craft supplies would have helped me buy cookware? It is coated non-stick cookware, but at least it is not aluminim. I am scared to death of aluminum poisoning since I heard it is linked to Alzheimer's.

I have had stomach issues all of my life! I was probably born with Celiac, but was not diagnosed until recently. I spit up every formula they put me on as an infant. Finally, they had to switch me to 2% milk. I suffered nausea and constant stomach aches as a child. Then, as I got into my teens, it continued to worsen, with bowel problems. I ended up with anemia, Thyroid disease, and gallbladder disease. Little did I know, Celiacs typically have these issues. I have a very violent reaction to gluten. I cannot handle even a microscopic speck of the stuff. I avoid it like the plague! Welcome to the forum! It is nice to have another gluten-free buddy!

Rachel- We like your geekiness and scientificness. I think I'm going to invest in some new cookware too. have to go to Macy's today anyway. Hmmm...a little red Le Creuset perhaps. I always but red stuff for my dedicated cookware (except fot the two pans I have that look like spotted cows :P ). Red means "Stop. Gluten-free!" So far it's worked. Just hope I can hold the Le Creuset. I have a VERY VERY bad case of the dropsies right now (and the walking into walls-ies and the forgetting words-ies :rolleyes:) LYME brain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's how you do the initial seasoning. Don't wash with soap!! It takes off the seasoning! Just rinse and dry with paper towels.

When I cook, I put the skillet on the burner and put some oil in it, real oil, not spray stuff. I let the skillet heat up so it expands and absorbs the oil, but not too hot so you don't burn the oil. Then I cook whatever I'm cooking. When I'm finished, I leave the pan on the stove, but turn off the stove ... I scrape the pan while it's still hot. There's usually oil still in it, so it also absorbs the oil while it cools. When it's cool, I just rinse and dry out with a paper towel.

If I make something that needs scrubbing, then I rub some oil onto it after I dry it, but it doesn't need that if I didn't scrub it.

The more you use it, the better it gets. If it gets stuck on food, you're actually supposed to use coarse ground salt for scrubbing. But using soap, undoes it all. I don't even use soap if I scrub it.

I don't believe any of this would cause a mold issue ... I don't see how it would.

Anna was having me take 1 tsp twice a day. I'm going to try taking it again, but taking much less each time and see if I can handle it.

Dear Lisa,

Mold is naturally present in a lot of things, including nuts. It may be the fat. Many Celiacs do not tolerate fats either until their gut heals. Leaky-Gut can trigger all kinds of problems. IBS and IBD are only a couple of things it can cause. Charcoal may be irritating it. Rancid almond butter, however, could cause irritation as well. If you suspect something, eliminate it and see how you feel. Then, add it back in after a week. That should give you your answer.

Jin...I think this member contacted me awhile back (maybe about candida) and I did think she could have Lyme or mercury problems. If I remember correctly her kids may have been sick too?? Anyways...I answered her questions and suggested Lyme testing and also looking into candida/mercury.

I never heard back from her....which is usually the case when people contact me and I respond with this info. :P

Yeah...I dont think people wanna hear about Lyme. :ph34r:

Are you sure the milk of magnesia isnt causing you problems?? I would reccomend not taking anything at all for maybe 5 days or so...then add only one thing in...and dont add anything else for 3 days. If there are no problems add something else and wait again for 3 days before anything else.

You wont know whats bothering you if there are alot of variables....theres no way to figure out whats causing the pain.

Yes...rancid nut butters are moldy. Stay away from anything moldy...this could be causing your pain since you have a high sensitivity to molds....and it could be causing your "bubbly guts".

Nuts and seeds are generally good for you...but NOT when you're sensitive to molds. I cant eat any nuts, seeds, or butters made from them. They are all too moldy for me...and yes...they do make me sick. :(

But maybe the most important moment came during acupuncture, the sessions were close to an hour of just lying still with the various needles in, it was a time I came to welcome, the pain was minimal in that position and I could just relax into my body and listen to it.

I think if our bodies want salt we should give it to them, there are people on the Lyme board who started out with high blood pressure, went on the salt/c treatment and had their blood pressure normalize.

I had that same experience with accupuncture. After the needles were in, he would lower the lights, put on soft music, and leave me alone for quite a while. I would feel at times peaceful, sleepy and emotional. The rest of the day, I would be very tired but calm.

Interesting about the salt/c normalizing blood pressure. I'd love to not have to take meds for it.

Leaky gut can trigger IBS when you eat a food that you're intolerant to. I have many food intolerances in addition to Celiac.

I would suggest stopping your suppliments for a while and focusing on whole, naturally gluten free foods. Things like chicken, rice, gluten free chicken broth (Pacific Brand is good), well-cooked veggies, potatoes, bananas, avocados and spring water.

Almond butter must be kept refregerated or it will become rancid. Right now, you may want to lay off nuts until your digestion improves.

With a leaky gut, you should avoid things like corn, soy and dairy until you feel well enough to test them and see if they are a problem.

In my opinion, you need to begin to heal your intestine so you can start to absorb the much-needed nutrients.

I know alot of people react to it....including me. I've read enough bad stuff about it to make me believe its not too good for us. I believe MSG can cause weight gain and I dont think carrageenan is much different.

Carrageenan is a commonly used food additive that is

extracted from red seaweed by using powerful alkali

solvents. These solvents would remove the tissues

and skin from your hands as readily as would any acid.

Carrageenan is a thickening agent. It's the vegetarian

equivalent of casein, the same protein that is isolated

from milk and used to thicken foods. Casein is also

used to produce paints, and is the glue used to hold

a label to a bottle of beer. Carrageenan is the magic

ingredient used to de-ice frozen airplanes sitting on

tarmacs during winter storms.

IS CARRAGEENAN REALLY NATURAL?

Carrageenan is about as wholesome as monosodium glutamate

(MSG), which is extracted from rice, and can equally be

considered natural. Aspartame (NutraPoison) is also natural,

as it is extracted from decayed plant matter that has been

underground for millions of years (oil). So too are many

other substances such as carrageenan that can also be

classified by FDA and USDA as wholesome and natural

food additives.

Carrageenan is a gel. It coats the insides of a stomach,

like gooey honey or massage oil. Digestive problems often

ensue. Quite often, soy eaters or soymilk drinkers react

negatively to carrageenen, and blame their discomforting

stomachaches on the soy.

High weight molecular carrageenans are considered to be safe,

and were given GRAS status (safe for human consumption) by

the FDA. Low weight carrageenans are considered to be

dangerous. Even SILK admits this

Do a little experiment. Drink a quart of SILK.

Pay careful attention to your carrageenen-induced

tummy ache and intestinal discomfort. Many consumers

unfairly blame that on soy. Now you know the truth.

Drink a quart of VitaSoy, 8th Continent, Soy Dream,

or Eden Soy, and you will not get the garrageenan-blues.

Carrageenan causes MSG-reactions in great numbers of MSG-sensitive people. There are various forms of carrageenan. We don't know whether carrageenan contains MSG or creates MSG during processing.

Thanks Rachel--Probably another gooey protein that my body can do without!

I've incorporated almond milk and have gained over 5 pounds in the last 6 weeks. I lost some weight after my surgery last winter and was holding steady at a pretty good weight for me and then this! :(

I wonder if it stimulates my appetite. I think MSG does that....

Yeah...its one of those rare "dress-up" occassions. This one was at a Safeway banquet.....I always dress up for those. :)

      @catnapt, Wheat germ has very little gluten in it.  Gluten is  the carbohydrate storage protein, what the flour is made from, the fluffy part.  Just like with beans, there's the baby plant that will germinate  ("germ"-inate) if sprouted, and the bean part is the carbohydrate storage protein.   Wheat germ is the baby plant inside a kernel of wheat, and bran is the protective covering of the kernel.   Little to no gluten there.   Large amounts of lectins are in wheat germ and can cause digestive upsets, but not enough Gluten to provoke antibody production in the small intestines. Luckily you still have time to do a proper gluten challenge (10 grams of gluten per day for a minimum of two weeks) before your next appointment when you can be retested.

      Hello, @asaT, I'm curious to know whether you are taking other B vitamins like Thiamine B1 and Niacin B3.  Malabsorption in Celiac disease affects all the water soluble B vitamins and Vitamin C.  Thiamine and Niacin are required to produce energy for all the homocysteine lowering reactions provided by Folate, Cobalamine and Pyridoxine.   Weight gain with a voracious appetite is something I experienced while malnourished.  It's symptomatic of Thiamine B1 deficiency.   Conversely, some people with thiamine deficiency lose their appetite altogether, and suffer from anorexia.  At different periods on my lifelong journey, I suffered this, too.   When the body doesn't have sufficient thiamine to turn food, especially carbohydrates, into energy (for growth and repair), the body rations what little thiamine it has available, and turns the carbs into fat, and stores it mostly in the abdomen.  Consuming a high carbohydrate diet requires additional thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  Simple carbohydrates (sugar, white rice, etc.) don't contain thiamine, so the body easily depletes its stores of Thiamine processing the carbs into fat.  The digestive system communicates with the brain to keep eating in order to consume more thiamine and other nutrients it's not absorbing.   One can have a subclinical thiamine insufficiency for years.  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so the symptoms can wax and wane mysteriously.  Symptoms of Thiamine insufficiency include stunted growth, chronic fatigue, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi (diarrhea, abdominal pain), heart attack, Alzheimer's, stroke, and cancer.   Thiamine improves bone turnover.  Thiamine insufficiency can also affect the thyroid.  The thyroid is important in bone metabolism.  The thyroid also influences hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, and menopause.  Vitamin D, at optimal levels, can act as a hormone and can influence the thyroid, as well as being important to bone health, and regulating the immune system.  Vitamin A is important to bone health, too, and is necessary for intestinal health, as well.   I don't do dairy because I react to Casein, the protein in dairy that resembles gluten and causes a reaction the same as if I'd been exposed to gluten, including high tTg IgA.  I found adding mineral water containing calcium and other minerals helpful in increasing my calcium intake.   Malabsorption of Celiac affects all the vitamins and minerals.  I do hope you'll talk to your doctor and dietician about supplementing all eight B vitamins and the four fat soluble vitamins because they all work together interconnectedly.

      Hi Jane: You may want to try the D3 I now take. I have reactions to fillers and many additives. Sports Research, it is based in the USA and I have had no bad reactions with this brand. The D3 does have coconut oil but it is non GMO, it is Gluten free, Soy free, Soybean free and Safflower oil free.  I have a cupboard full of supplements that did not agree with me -  I just keep trying and have finally settled on Sports Research. I take NAKA Women's Multi full spectrum, and have not felt sick after taking 2 capsules per day -  it is a Canadian company. I buy both from Amazon. I wish you well in your searching, I know how discouraging it all is. Florence.

      highly unlikely  NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else has ever caused me these kinds of symptoms I have no problem with dates, they are a large part of my diet In fact, I eat a very high fiber, very high vegetable and bean diet and have for many years now. It's considered a whole foods plant based or plant forward diet (I do now eat some lean ground turkey but not much) I was off dairy for years but recently had to add back plain yogurt to meet calcium needs that I am not allowed to get from supplements (I have not had any problem with the yogurt)   I eat almost no processed foods. I don't eat out. almost everything I eat, I cook myself I am going to keep a food diary but to be honest, I already know that it's wheat products and also barley that are the problem, which is why I gradually stopped eating and buying them. When I was eating them, like back in early 2024, when I was in the middle of moving and ate out (always had bread or toast or rolls or a sub or pizza) I felt terrible but at that time was so busy and exhausted that I never stopped to think it was the food. Once I was in my new place, I continued to have bread from time to time and had such horrible joint pain that I was preparing for 2 total knee replacements as well as one hip! The surgery could not go forward as I was (and still am) actively losing calcium from my bones. That problem has yet to be properly diagnosed and treated   anyway over time I realized that I felt better when I stopped eating bread. Back at least 3 yrs ago I noticed that regular pasta made me sick so I switched to brown rice pasta and even though it costs a lot more, I really like it.   so gradually I just stopped buying and eating foods with gluten. I stopped getting raisin bran when I was constipated because it made me bloated and it didn't help the constipation any more (used to be a sure bet that it would in the past)   I made cookies and brownies using beans and rolled oats and dates and tahini and I LOVE them and have zero issues eating those I eat 1 or more cans of beans per day easily can eat a pound of broccoli - no problem! Brussels sprouts the same thing.   so yeh it's bread and related foods that are clearly the problem  there is zero doubt in my mind

      Thank you for your post, @nanny marley It is interesting what you say about 'It's OK not to sleep'. Worrying about sleeping only makes it much harder to sleep.  One of my relatives is an insomniac and I am sure that is part of the problem.  Whereas I once had a neighbour who, if she couldn't sleep, would simply get up again, make a cup of tea, read, do a sudoku or some other small task, and then go back to bed when she felt sleepy again.  I can't think it did her any harm - she lived  well into her nineties. Last week I decided to try a Floradix Magnesium supplement which seems to be helping me to sleep better.  It is a liquid magnesium supplement, so easy to take.  It is gluten free (unlike the Floradix iron supplement).  Might be worth a try.
