Every Thing Was Gluten Free!

i had an appt. in boise yesterday (2 1/2 hours away) while there, we checked out a new store that has been opened up by a mother of celiac twins that goes to the same ped gi we do. EVERTHING in her store was gluten free----no label reading required. even though the store was small, i have never seen so many different gluten free products in one place. i am so excited about this place----i just wish it wasn't so far away for us. this is also the first time i have talked to anyone else that has twins with celiac. (her husband also has celiac) they are also having a kids celiac support group meeting tonight, but it is too far for us to drive on a school night---i really wish we could go. maybe they will have some this summer that we can attend.

the store is called "Jake's Place"---named after one of her celiac boys (who also is diabetic)

laurie--yes, it's boise idaho----meridian, actually. those towns just all kind of blend together. if you want to stop there, let me know and i will give you the address. where will you be traveling? i thought i was pretty much alone here in idaho.

On State Street and Glenwood in Boise Idaho there is a place that makes gluten free pizza called pizzalchik. Usually they like you to call in advance to make sure they have gluten free dough ready to go. They are very careful about cross contamination and make a good healthy gluten free pizza. They also make gluten free cheesecakes.

thanks!! the girls and i have appts. in boise on june 1st. it is the day after the twins turn 15, so we are hoping to do some birthday shopping. i'm sure they would love to have pizza.

I too will be visiting family in Boise this summer, so if I get the info correctly, it is Jake's Place in Meidian Idhao......? Any possibility of more definitive address? Also, is there a bakery in Boise area or someplace to buy ready made baked goods, ie bread so I don't have to haul stuff with me or buy ingredients and have to bake there. Thanx.

I would be heading to Cedar City Utah, but unfortunatley we had to cancel the trip. But I did get to go to a gluten free store in Vancouver, WA. It was fantastic!

I have heard of a CELIAC SUPPORT GROUP that meets at St Luke's in Meridian, ID. Does anyone have any info on this? Do you attend? When is the next meeting?

This is an old post but I recently found the store too. Its still there right next to the big red barn. Uncle Ron, sorry I can't answer your Q???. There is a store in downtown Nampa for some gluten free foods but I have never been there. Do you ever go to the Boise Co-Op? It has some things. Do you know of any other places in Treasure Valley?? I wish we had a Traders and a Whole Foods. :(

Christine if you are still around lets chat. I have a daughter 17 today :) and a daughter in Boise thats almost 20 and Christina is her name B) . Pizzalchik is in the phone book, 7330 W. State. Thanks for the info, I will be sure to tell my daughter :D She will love the cheesecake and a new place to eat with her college friends! I will for sure take my 17 yr old too!

Something else. I just called them and Pizzalchik has roasted chicken too. A 12" cheese gluten-free pizza is 10 bucks. Call several hours ahead of time to preorder the pizza. Not "fast food" ;) They still have cheesecake.

Wow, another Idahoan on the forum! Thats great, I'm mostly a lurker but have been to Jakes Place numerous times. Its great to have a store that you know everything is safe to eat in. Did you also know that just down the road (going west) is a restaurant that serves gluten free pizza and pasta? Its Louie's Italian Restaurant and its *really* good. They don't have a gluten free kitchen, but they are well aware of cross contamination issues and my mother and I have never had a problem there, they are very careful. Its not exactly cheap, but its yummy and you don't have to call ahead of time.

Wow, that's great. I will tell my daughter. She is only mildly allergic so that's perfect. Thanks :D My husband used to eat at Louie's years ago. I think there is one in Sun Valley but I have never been there. Where are you from?

I live in Emmett, its a small town so I have to do most of my shopping in Meridian/Boise. I guess you could say I'm pretty much asymptomatic when it comes to gluten so unless I eat it every day all day I can't tell I've gotten into something. My mom is very sensitive though and has eaten at Louie's a lot and has never had a problem. They even brought her out a new dessert on the house to try out for them so I know they are trying to enhance their gluten-free menu. Its really good food too, and its right on the menu that they can make almost anything gluten free. Louie's is one of the only places my whole family is able to eat at because we have some picky eaters! Red Robin is the other place we can all go since they make their fries gluten-free. Yum!

Where are you from? Its rare that I see/hear about anyone from Idaho with Celiac.

Born and raised in Caldwell and moved to Garden Valley 7 yrs ago. Been thru Emmett many times. Great info THANKS! I get my gluten-free stuff at the Boise Co-op. Have you ever been there? It is a bit cheaper than Jakes. But you have to look for it where as Jakes its all there right in front of you. My daughter usually eats at Chapala's but its not gluten-free. She just orders carefully. I called Pizzalchik. There web is Pizzalchik.com. They don't list gluten-free items on it though.

I do shop at the Co-Op once in awhile. I haven't lately just because we haven't been down in that area for awhile. Its such a toss up because Jake's is all gluten free but more expensive and the Co-Op is a bit cheaper and I get a discount there with my BSU Student card but the parking is horrible and its always packed inside. I'm not going to complain though, I'm just glad we have a few places to shop around here!

      My understanding, and ex I erience is that we coeliacs are likely to suffer more extreme reactions from viruses. Eg we are more likely to be hospitalised with influenza.       I'm no longer dealing with constipation. I got my liver test last month and it was in normal range. Two years ago I did have a vitamin D deficiency but I'm know taking vitamin D3 pills.       Thank you for your thoughtful contribution, @Tazfromoz. I live in the UK and the National Health Service funds free vaccines for people deemed to be at heightened risk.  I was pleasantly surprised to discover that as a coeliac in my 50s I was eligible for this vaccine, and didn't think twice when it was offered to me.  Soon after diagnosis I suffered mystery symptoms of burning nerve pain, following two separate dermatomes, and one GP said he felt that I had contracted shingles without the rash aka zoster sine herpete.  Of course, without the rash, it's a difficult diagnosis to prove, but looking back I think he was completely spot on.  It was miserable and lasted about a year, which I gather is quite typical. For UK coeliacs reading this, it is worth having a conversation with your GP if you haven't been vaccinated against shingles yet, if you are immunosuppressed or over 50. I have just googled this quickly - it is a helpful summary which I unashamedly took from AI, short for time as I am this morning!   My apologies. In the UK, coeliac patients aren't automatically eligible for the shingles jab unless they're severely immunosuppressed or over the general age for vaccination (currently 50+) but Coeliac UK recommends discussing the vaccine with a GP due to potential splenic dysfunction, which can increase risk, even if not routine for all coeliacs. Eligibility hinges on specific criteria like weakened immunity (chemo, certain meds) or age, with the non-live Shingrix vaccine offered in two doses to those deemed high-risk, often starting from age 18 for the immunocompromised.

She was undiagnosed with coeliac disease until she was 65. Me at 45. I've had the new long lasting vaccine. It knocked me around badly, but worth it to avoid shingles.

I was doing some research and questioned either or not I might have celiac disease (since I didn’t have any gastric symptoms really). My family doctor ran blood screening for celiac. And my results came back: Tissue Transglutaminase Ab IgA HI 66.6 U/mL Immunoglobulin IgA 1.73 g/ My doctor then diagnosed me with celiac and I have now been gluten free for 3 months. In this time I no longer get night sweats my joint pain is gone and I’m still having trouble sleeping but could very much be from anxiety. I was since referred to an endoscopy clinic to get a colonoscopy and they said I should be getting a biopsy done to confirm celiac. In this case I have to return to eating gluten for 4-6 weeks before the procedure. Just wanted some advice on this. I seem to be getting different answers from my family physician and from the GI doctor for a diagnosis.    Thanks,
