Celiac In The Toronto Sun Today!

Today's Toronto Sun newspaper has an article about celiac disease in the lifestyle section. It is on the bottom of a page which is dominated by a larger article about nut allergies.

I don't agree with the final sentence which says, "a biopsy of the small intestine is the only definitive way to diagnose it." It is certainly the traditional and most common way, but no longer the only way.

Even though it is excellent that a major paper had an article on Celiac disease, it will serve to further perpetuate the false picture most people have of celiac disease. It only gives the 'typical' picture of celiac disease, as in having diarrhea, weight loss etc., nowhere does it mention anything about anemia, possible weight gain and other autoimmune diseases as a result of celiac disease.

Celiac disease causes the villi -- the hair-like substances that line the small intestine -- to lie flat, thus preventing the absorption of food's essential nutrients.

Also, this paragraph is just plain wrong, and shows that the author of the article didn't bother to find out the facts, but just quoted the woman he interviewed, who obviously didn't understand that the villi atrophy, as in shrinking, rather than lying flat.

The solution I had to drink contained sorbitol and mannitol. I was in the MRI, lying on my back, for about 40 minutes. I was given glucagon partway through, and a gadolinium contrast agent. After I got home there was some diarrhea from the prep solution.
