Finally A Doctor Who Doesn't Think I'm Nuts!

I finally found a doctor who doesn't think that I'm nuts, thanks to Armetta! :D I went to see him on Wednesday, worrying because after my first doctor said that she was running the tests, I went gluten-free. She didn't run the tests, just some general tests.

So Wednesday, I had been gluten-free for about 3 1/2 weeks or so. Initially after I found out that my doctor had not run the tests, I tried to eat gluten again, but got violently ill, and just could not convince myself to make myself feel that bad, for a test that may or may not show a true dx.

I went in, told him my symptoms (past and present) , showed him the dx on my hands (even though it was now beginning to clear up after 10 years), and that I had been gluten-free for 3 1/2 weeks.

He simply said "We could run the tests, but who cares what they say. You've proven that you are at the least gluten intolerant."

He gave me a B12 shot right then to help with fatigue, and scheduled them for the following weeks. Gave me a gluten-free migraine medicine. And is looking for a gluten-free anxiety medication that my insurance will cover.

All in all, he was extremely nice and very helpful!

All I can say is THANK YOU ARMETTA! YOU'VE SAVED MY LIFE! :D

Oh, Melisa, you made me cry. I did not save your life, you did, by trusting an absolute stranger's recommendation. Good luck with the move and may the future hold many wonderful things for you and your family. HUGS

Sorry, I think I got you mixed up with another poster.

I hadn't been eating gluten free before having the antibody test done. I started eating gluten free after having the test done because the gastro PA told me to eat gluten-free for 6 months. I'm now 3 months in.

I tend to agree with RMJ. Your doc took the reasonable and practical approach to diagnosis. All things considered, it was the right way to go. However, if you have first degree relatives that show signs of possible celiac disease, urge them to get formally tested before they start the gluten free diet.

It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.
