My Risotteria Story

Only you guys will appreciate this:

Last week, I chaperoned a trip from my son's high school to NYC. While the kids were otherwise occupied, a group of us took a taxi to a restaurant recommended by another friend -- some Italian place. I'm getting out of the cab, turned around to face the rest of the group, and over their heads read the sign about two doors down:

"Risotteria"

and I yell

"OHMYGOD IT"S RISOTTERIA!" and then I bolt down the street to gawk. I get out my camera, to take pictures for my celiacs (they stayed home for this trip). It starts to pour. A guy comes OUT of Risotteria with an umbrella and holds it over my head. I am actually crying. He says

"yeah, we get this a lot"

:)

Was this last Friday by chance? Mookie and I ate there for lunch and left only a few minutes before it started pouring.

Wow that is so neat. I was planning on going into the city on Thursday (the past Thursday) that is the day when all the trains shut down b/c of something with the electric. Seems that there was some reason I fell and hurt my ankle! But my trip to Risoterria will happen!! I am determined!

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
