Sesmark, Other Rice Crackers

Hi Y'all.

It's been a while and I have been doing pretty well which is the good news. But I have a question about rice crackers. I used to eat Crunch Master a lot because it was cheaper than the other ones but now and all of the other ones seem to say that they are made in a facility that also handles wheat. So my husband has been discouraging me from eating any since the new label laws went into effect. About a week ago I got some Sesmark sesame crackers and have eaten them 3-4 times. During that time I have had minor stomach complaints and now today, 15 mins after eating 6, I definitely started feeling that old glutening feeling. It's been 8-9 hours and it's just continuing on and I'm getting that depressed feeling also.

I can't think of another thing I've been eating this past week that would be the problem. I have not been glutened in several, several months.

Does anyone have any info about these crackers or if they've gotten glutened from them? I'm pretty bummed out, this is a big weekend for me (tomorrow is my husband's birthday, our anniversary on Sunday, then my birthday on Monday) and I just don't feel like doing much of anything, let alone get ready for a big party tomorrow (which we are having). Argh!

Thanks!

Stephanie

Hi Stephanie--Nice to see you back--and your pretty kitty! (I even showed the picture of your cat to my husband--so cute!) I'm glad to hear that you've been doing well. Sorry, I don't have experience with those crackers--but it sounds to me like they are affecting you. I would stay away from them for a while--certainly through all of these happy occasions--and maybe try them again. Have a wonderful birthday! :)

Thanks, Patti! I'm getting ready to make the food for the party now and I'm thinking, blech. If it doesn't affect my mood, I'll be ok, because I can deal with stomach pain - just not the emotional roller coaster! :)

Yeah, my kitty got his picture in the paper recently (I used him as a model for an article I was writing about flea treatments) and now he has a big head and lots of people have been commenting on him when I see them now.

OK, one more "famous" picture of Benny the cat. You have to scroll down past the article.

Great article! We've been lucky--our cat is strictly indoors. I've heard the fleas can still get to an indoor cat, but it hasn't happened (knock wood) :D Enjoy the party!

Oh--just saw the second article/picture--so cute!! And the new kitchen is gorgeous :)

Your cat looks just like mine, except that mine has white paws. They could be related.

Steph-

So glad to see you back! I had been thinking about you...but never got around to pming you :( I ate those crackers once, but haven't since. I didn't notice a reaction per se, but every once in a while I just get a vibe from a product, usually from a statement they've made, and I choose not to trust them. Weird maybe...but I've stopped using a few products based on that... Hope you feel better soon...

Ah-Benny is so flippin' adorable ! Patti--I also didn't "recognized" you with the new pic--beautiful sunflower! Maggie is an "indoor" cat, but she had had a flea or two from time to time...She might pick them up on the screened in porch. She wears a lovely purple flea color in the warm months (which she hates) !

Well, I survived my weekend but I am still having stomach reactions. So definitely got a glutening in there. It was fast after eating the crackers, but in retrospect, I ate them several times (at least three times) during the week before, and it was nearly 24 hours after the first time I ate them I started feeling something. But nothing like how I felt 15 mins or so after eating 6 on Friday. Blech.

Fortunately, has not affected my mood. That is a good thing. I can get really depressed. I will give the other crackers a shot in about a month - I bought a 6-pack at Costco so I have a ton. But if they don't work out, then I'm 100% on Mary's Gone Crackers. Those are delicious! Though it would be nice to have variety.

Nice to see you Jen. I'm doing well otherwise and had been enjoying my 4 months of no food reactions/no migraines. Oh well. Had to happen at some point, I guess!

Every time I eat Sesmark or Crunch Master rice crackers I wind up very sorry I did because I get gluten brain fog and the black cloud of doom. I've "tested" this several times and have no other explanation. It is still kind of hard to believe that such a small amount would do that to me.

Hi, I posted before about my son's legs shaking after gluten. I did end up starting him on vit b and happily he actually started sleeping better and longer.  Back to my 4 year old. She had gone back to meltdowns, early wakes, and exhaustion. We tested everything again and her ferritin was lowish again (16) and vit d was low. After a couple weeks on supplements she is cheerful, sleeping better and looks better. The red rimmed eyes and dark circles are much better.   AND her Ttg was a 3!!!!!! So, we are crushing the gluten-free diet which is great. But WHY are her iron and vit d low if she's not getting any gluten????  She's on 30mg of iron per day and also a multivitamin and vit d supplement (per her dr). That helped her feel better quickly. But will she need supplements her whole life?? Or is there some other reason she's not absorbing iron? We eat very healthy with minimal processed food. Beef maybe 1x per week but plenty of other protein including eggs daily.  She also says her tummy hurts every single morning. That was before the iron (do not likely a side effect). Is that common with celiac?

Celiac disease is the most likely cause, but here are articles about the other possible causes:

Hi @Atl222 As @trents points out, there could be many reasons for this biopsy result.  I am interested to know, is your gastroenterologist concerned?  Also, are your blood tests showing steady improvement over the years? I remember when I had my last biopsy, several years after diagnosis, mine came back with with raised lymphocytes but no villous damage, too! In my own case, my consultant wasn't remotely concerned - in fact, he said I might still get this result even if all I ever did was eat nothing but rice and water.   My coeliac blood tests were still steadily improving, albeit slowly, which was reassuring.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Atl222! Yes, your increased lymphocytes could be in response to oats or it could possibly be cross contamination from gluten that is getting into your diet from some unexpected source but not enough to damage the villi. And I'm certain that increased lymphocytes can be caused by other things besides celiac disease or gluten/oats exposure. See attachment. But you might try eliminating oats to start with and possibly dairy for a few months and then seek another endoscopy/biopsy to see if there was a reduction in lymphocyte counts.
