Today was the last day of school and our staff went out to lunch to the Filling Station restaurant (I'm in the Seattle area). Our PTA president told me she called ahead and assured me there would be lots of salads and choices for me to eat. Well, there was one appetizer, a chicken skewer, that was great and I had no problems with it (I'd know by now - 9 hours later). I ordered a Mexican style chicken salad, AFTER asking the waitress about wheat, seasonings, cross-contamination, etc. She was sure it would be fine. I knew there was a big problem when my salad came with a big white roll on it. I took it off and decided to just not eat that part of the salad. Two bites into the chicken I discovered that there were croutons mixed in with the lettuce. So I stopped eating. My friends wanted me to get a new one, but by this time I didn't trust the waitress or the kitchen staff and didn't want to throw 2 whole salads away. When I told the waitress that there were croutons in my salad, reminding her that I'd told her that I was "extremely allergic to wheat" (I find that easier than explaining) and that I would have become very sick if I'd accidentally eaten a bite of one, she shrugged her shoulders and said "Oh, I didn't know there were croutons in that" and then walked away. I'm thinking of writing a letter to the management, just to let them know of the problem, but I have no interest in a free meal there - our family will never go there. Our PTA paid a flat rate for all the meals, so there was no way to get a refund and I didn't want to make a scene. Arrgghh... just venting.

I wouldn't write a letter. I would call to complain.

I'd call to complain, too. Your family won't go there again, of course, but complaining might help the next person with celiac disease that tries to eat there...I hope you're feeling better this morning...

Liz--weren't you the one who told me to write and call the Red Robbin company when i was refused dinner on Easter...I think you were. I f not please look at my thread and call.

Well ck the Red Robbin Thread and see what happen...i've been really sick so not finding the thread but please look it up..vp of east coast called me on the phone. esp about attitude and they would like to know the attitude's of server's this was inexcusiable.

That is awful. I'm so sorry this happened. You can only hope that maybe one day karma will have this snotty waitress in a similar situation. But I definately think you should let them know what happened. Her behavoir was not at all acceptable. Just think if that was your attitude to a parent if one of your kids at school fell down and broke their leg. Your reaction would not be to say oh well and walk away, and you should not allow this waitress to get away with that behavior either.

      Hello everyone. I am Elena and am 38 years old. I suspect I have a gluten intolerance even if my celiac panel is ok. I have the following symptoms : facial flushing, Red dots not bumps în face, bloating abdominal distension, hair loss, depression anxiety even with meds and even bipolar. Fatigue extreme to the point of not being able to work. All of these after I eat gluten. Could I have non celiac gluten sensitivity? Thanks anyone else with these symptoms?

      Hi Everyone,  I do appreciate your replies to my original post.   Here is where I am now in this journey.  I am currently seeing a Naturopath.  One thing I did not post before is that I take Esomeprazole for GERD.  My Naturopath believes that the decrease in the gastric acid has allowed the yeast to grow.    She has put me on some digestive enzymes.  She also put me on Zinc, Selenium, B 12, as she felt that I was not absorbing my vitamins. I am about 5 weeks into this treatment, and I am feeling better. I did not have any trouble taking the Fluconazole.

      I'm sure it's chemically perfect. Most of them taste lousy!

      Hi @JulieRe.  I just found your post.  It seems that I am also experiencing thrush, and my doctor believes that I have fungal overgrowth in my gut, which is most likely candida.  I'm seeing my GI doctor next week, so I'm hoping she can diagnose and confirm this and then give me an antifungal treatment.  In the meantime, I have been working with a functional medicine doctor, doing a candida cleanse and taking vitamins. It's already helping to make me feel better (with some ups and downs, of course), so I do think the yeast is definitely a problem for me on top of my celiac disease and I'm hoping my GI doctor can look into this a bit further.  So, how about you?  Did the candida come back, or is it still gone following your fluconazole treatment?  Also, was it awful to take fluconazole?  I understand that taking an antifungal can cause a reaction that sometimes makes people feel sick while they're taking it.  I hope you're doing better still !

It feels like the longest month ever, but you are doing the right thing to get a clear diagnosis, which can be crucial for your long-term health and getting the proper care.
