Night before last I ate some tortilla chips(Archer Farms from Target) and some salsa from Cosco. Yesterday I could tell one of them caused D. Last night I took 3 capsules of Glucomannan Fiber with water before bed and this morning 2 came out. I just ordered these capsules and they are gluten-free from bionutrients. Has anyone experienced this. Is it because I was glutened?

Most likely it was because you had been glutened. They didn't remain in your intestines long enouh to dissolve. In addition some time release products have capsules that have microscopic holes through which the medication is delivered at a slower rate. The capsules themselves are designed to dissolve slowly and if something like a glutening speeds up their transit rate you will see them.

sometimes coatings on pills don't breakdown...even in non celiacs. a simple test is to put pill in glass of regular water and see how long it takes breakdown (a pharamacist told me to do this when a no frills vitamin didnt' breakdown..he said that some coatings are too tough)

I have eaten brown rice lately. Maybe that is it. I ate some yesterday and the day before . Rice isn't on the healing diet - I was getting bored with it.

thanks, I'll try that. This dr. supposedly coats them so they do break down easily. the other ingredient is gelatin capsule(vegetable source) that is gluten-free right?

I have the capsule in water and it is floating. I'll let you know. How long should it take?

For me undigested food is because I eat something that didn't agree with me.

I read many posts here saying "I'VE BEEN GLUTENED"...

Please don't take this the wrong wasy but -- I think many people when the get DX'ed with celiac disease think oh, I just have to go gluten-free. It's more then that, believe me! Well, over the last 5-6 years and being a member here, having several loved oned died of celiac disease, and read everything I can get my hands on about this God awful disease and everything else assoiciated with it. s

Saying I've been glutened it a broad statement... And it's something more for us as time passes.

I went gluten-free & DF for all these years. I read every label and question authority. What I have learned is as time passes we develop secondary/multiple food senstivities or allergies. The doctors are now finding this out to be a fact. They don't stress to us the importance of rotation diet... But that is for another thread.

In researching Archer Farms they make 2000 type of food that could have cross contaminted your chips. Or you mmight have a problem with CORN like many of us do. Or hidden SOY.. Or something else you don't know... Open Original Shared Link Are you trying to loose weight?

Costco Salsa? What are the ingredients on the label?

If a label reads (vegetable source) -- It could be anything hidden in it. Beware it might be soy.

Thanks for your help. What is DF? No I am not trying to loose weight I'm about 5'4" and weigh 115 but I am trying to get more fiber and Dr. Becker said this one is easy to digest. I was taking Psyllium 100% natural fiber in my smoothies. I just thought this might be better. I do eat a lot of raw fruits and vegetables. I was staying away from corn but love tostidas and popcorn so was having that some. I've also been staying away from night shades but thought I would just try a little of this salsa that I have been eating from costco for years. I called them but they won't be in until tomorrow. It is Santa Barbara Salsa -Deli style-ingredients are tomatoes, onions, cilantro, SPICES,salt, assorted peppers, garlic, phosphoric acid, calcium chloride, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, sodium bisulfite, xanthan gum. What do you think? Bad stuff? I've been on a healing diet but I have had some rice(brown) and some chips and this and some popcorn. Thanks, LindaLee

Is rice not on your diet because all grains are out? You've said "healing diet" a couple times, but I'm not sure what that means.

I like to do little things to increase my fiber intake: figs - my goodness figs have a lot of fiber, and if you don't have sugar issues, a dried fig is phenomenal for fiber intake. I also eat prunes. Plus, I love veggies, so I get a lot through those, and I eat some beans (though am considering taking those out to test), and those are chock-full.

DF is dairy free I'm pretty sure, that's how I would abbreviate it. I'm dairy free and potato free, but do ocassionally eat tomatoes - mostly in homemade salsa and on sandwiches. I think nightshades are tough for lots of folks, and they make getting enough calcium difficult.

Anyway, good luck in figuring this out. I'm on the C side of things, so D aint my thing. Take care.

I am cracking up! You are so funny. The healing diet I am on is from the book "Foundations for Healing"by Richard Becker,D.0. , no grains of any kind are allowed until I guess the C's and D's get straighted out. No beans either. The only fruits and berries are tart ones. No night shades for autoimmune problems. No sugar. No potatoes, yams, or beets. No dairy except pure butter, 100% cream, sour cream, cream cheese, cow and goat milk plain yogurt, cottage cheese and buttermilk. No light or fat reduced dairy allowed. No carbonated drinks except mineral water. No alcohol. Stevia is allowed and raw nuts and seeds .Meats, Poultry and Fish are all good. Crustaceans and Mollusks and eggs are ok. The main thing I miss is the corn, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers , rice and my dirty martini. I love figs but not now on this plan. I watch his program on Family Net called Your Health. He is very good. He's into natural-holistic plans.

sorry to say, but the no frills vitamin never broke down in the water test. we threw them out because they went thru both of us whole, not just my husband the celiac.

the gelatin should melt in body temperature water at the least - you could even add vinegar to mimick stomach acid, I suppose.

This expensive capsule is floating in the water glass. It looks bigger and fuzzy - there are some particles floating around. I'd say this capsule has doubled in size. What is it suppose to be doing?

If it is a pill, you can crush it. If it is a capsule, you can open it and dump out the contents. Mix them with applesauce, as though you were giving the pill to a child.

I heard that the human waste that gets collected here and there is chock full of vitamins that have never been digested at all - whole. Yuck.

The cleansning diet sounds interesting. I'm not ready to try dairy again myself; if I have the smallest amount I get C. But I am struggling with why I'm still bloated and have C problems, even though I'm gluten free for nearly two months. Well, there have been moments like when I figured out my pumpkin seeds might be cc'd (the bag says made at a facility that processes gluten), but for the most part, I'm good.

So I'm considering cutting out grains altogether, and beans altogether...but that makes it tougher to get the fiber I need.

Maybe I'll check out that book Dangerous Grains and see what they say.

Have you tried magnesium? That can help and also an epson salt bath. It has magnesium and I used to do the e.s. bath everynight for tired muscles/stress. Mag. is good for the heart. and circulation. It helped me to get some sleep. I just started reading "I was poisoned by my body" by Gloria Gilbere. She practiced natural medicine and got Leaky Gut. One of the conditions associated with Leaky Gut Syndrome is Celiac. It is real good and she explains things so we can understand it. It was at my library. I haven't started "Dangerous Grains" yet. I plan to read that next. LindaLee

Slightly OT, but I never buy Target brand anymore. I've had trouble with their vitamins and I thought their mouthwash for a while (although I now believe it is ok). Their customer service is awful - you have to call Target who will give you the number of their suppliers who aren't set up to do customer service calls for consumers. I'd much rather give my business to a company who can tell me right away if their products are gluten-free.

Don't put anything in your mouth or on your body you haven't researched and know what every ingredient means. And then you have to watch out that it hasn't been cross contaminated with something else.

GRAINS ARE POISON! JUST LIKE SOY. There is plenty of fiber in ther gluten free gluten-free dairy free DF soy free SF food we eat.

ON CNN LAST WEEK THERE WERE ABOUT 8 OF THE ALTERNATIVE MED DOCS ON. THEY ALL AGREED NEW RESEARCH IS COMING OUT it's this simple...

HIGH FIBER = COLON CANCER

DANGEROUS GRAINS IS A MUST READ. I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THE WHOLE CONCEPT UNTIL I READ IT. I HAVE THE BOOK "I was poisoned by my body" ON ORDER.

AS TIME PASSES AND WE ARE REACTIVE - we learn you can NOT TRUST big business they lie. Look at Mc Donalds. Look at IMODIUM liquid has gluten, corn, and everything that will kill us Celiac's. I have been taking Imodium for 10 years now, not knowing it was making my celiac disease worse.

Walmart brand is the same was every thing - I mean everything is cross contaminated. BEWARE!

Thank you Sillyyak. It is so much to do just to eat! And I'm one of those that stays hungry ALL the time. I am beginning to think about semi-retiring. Between research, eating and liking my bathroom best ...are you retired? You know alot!!! I wish I had seen that about the fiber. I know when I take it I feel better and things turn out more normal, if you know what I mean. LindaLee

First, that study did not say HIGH FIBER = COLON CANCER, it said HIGH FIBER doesn't affect ones chances of getting COLON CANCER. It was also only a three year study, and even the researchers said that's not necessarily long enough to come to a conclusion. Here's the link to the CNN story: Open Original Shared Link

Also, all grains are not poison. Are some people intolerant of them? Absolutely. Are many celiacs sensitive to all grains? Sure. Are they bad for the general population? In their natural form, not really.

Same thing with soy and corn. In their highly overprocessed state, no, they are not healthy for anyone. Are they in and of themselves poison? No. And sure, some people react to them both, but again, most don't.

And I'm glad drug companies use corn as a binder, it's a lot better than gluten for us! It's cheap and widely available, and safe for the VAST MAJORITY of people that consume it. What would you rather they use? Remember it has to be both cheap and stable for drug delivery. I'm sorry you have so many intolerances, but remember that businesses are out there to appeal to as many people as possible. They can't please everyone.

Actually, drug delivery is moving in the direction of polymers, so cornstarch may become obsolete in drugs.

Immodium is not poison. The company made a business decision to reformulate their immodium liquid to make it more marketable, and that reformulation included gluten. Up until that reformulation, it was gluten-free. Businesses are out to make money and to market to the general population, which we are not a part of! Even if celiac disease does occur in 1 in every 133 people, that is still less than one percent of the population. We live in a capitalist freemarket society, we have to deal with big companies, liars or not.

By the way, fiber does not just come from grains. It comes from many fruits and vegetables also. Psyllium is from a plant. You can have a high fiber diet without grains of any kind, which is probably healthy to do anyway. There have been strong links to fiber and the reduction of cholesterol.

BRUMI1968 Collaborator

I find it interesting that the study looked at "cereal fiber" and not fiber in general. Also, the whole idea that a study like this really says anything at all is ridiculous. What about all the other facets of life for these participants. My word, you can't factor in that stuff. Medical study/science cracks me up -- that's why we get such see-saw: coffee's good for you, coffee's bad for you...bla bla bla. When I told my sister soy turns out to be kindof nasty stuff (at least processed soy), she flipped. What the heck should I believe then, she said. My idea is that if you follow the money, your likely to find the fibs, exaggerations, truth stretching, and sometimes outright lies and malice.

Anyway, I'm going to read dangerous grains and the body poisoning me book. I like having info. I have a good bulls**t detector, plus I like to read all sides of things and research the daylights out of them...so that way I can use my own brains, and I know they have my best in mind.

That is what I was taking-Psyllium. Fiber does lower cholesterol. Soluable fiber is well tolerated and is suppose to promote healthy flora. Disease and good health starts in the intestinal track . Fiber promotes regularity, increases bone mass and helps digestion. The glucomannan fiber is suppose to be well tolerated. Celiac 's I think have a tendency towards high cholesterol. I am going to start a thread and see who has high cholesterol. LL

The Santa barbara Company called today and all their salsa is glutten free. Talked to target and the chips are gluten-free but may have cc. What a shame. They were good. I also ate a Hershey dark chocolate bar. It was either the chips or the milk in the chocolate. I haven't been consuming milk but I have been eating hard boiled eggs. I am looking forward to that chocolate you recommended. When I go back to Wallmart I am going to get some more of their pirax (sp)containers. I am using those now instead of tupperware.

Welcome to the forum, @Judy M! Yes, he definitely needs to continue eating gluten until the day of the endoscopy. Not sure why the GI doc advised otherwise but it was a bum steer.  Celiac disease has a genetic component but also an "epigenetic" component. Let me explain. There are two main genes that have been identified as providing the "potential" to develop "active" celiac disease. We know them as HLA-DQ 2.5 (aka, HLA-DQ 2) and HLA-DQ8. Without one or both of these genes it is highly unlikely that a person will develop celiac disease at some point in their life. About 40% of the general population carry one or both of these two genes but only about 1% of the population develops active celiac disease. Thus, possessing the genetic potential for celiac disease is far less than deterministic. Most who have the potential never develop the disease. In order for the potential to develop celiac disease to turn into active celiac disease, some triggering stress event or events must "turn on" the latent genes. This triggering stress event can be a viral infection, some other medical event, or even prolonged psychological/emotional trauma. This part of the equation is difficult to quantify but this is the epigenetic dimension of the disease. Epigenetics has to do with the influence that environmental factors and things not coded into the DNA itself have to do in "turning on" susceptible genes. And this is why celiac disease can develop at any stage of life. Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition (not a food allergy) that causes inflammation in the lining of the small bowel. The ingestion of gluten causes the body to attack the cells of this lining which, over time, damages and destroys them, impairing the body's ability to absorb nutrients since this is the part of the intestinal track responsible for nutrient absorption and also causing numerous other food sensitivities such as dairy/lactose intolerance. There is another gluten-related disorder known as NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity or just, "gluten sensitivity") that is not autoimmune in nature and which does not damage the small bowel lining. However, NCGS shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease such as gas, bloating, and diarrhea. It is also much more common than celiac disease. There is no test for NCGS so, because they share common symptoms, celiac disease must first be ruled out through formal testing for celiac disease. This is where your husband is right now. It should also be said that some experts believe NCGS can transition into celiac disease. I hope this helps.

My husband has had lactose intolerance for his entire life (he's 68 yo).  So, he's used to gastro issues. But for the past year he's been experiencing bouts of diarrhea that last for hours.  He finally went to his gastroenterologist ... several blood tests ruled out other maladies, but his celiac results are suspect.  He is scheduled for an endoscopy and colonoscopy in 2 weeks.  He was told to eat "gluten free" until the tests!!!  I, and he know nothing about this "diet" much less how to navigate his in daily life!! The more I read, the more my head is spinning.  So I guess I have 2 questions.  First, I read on this website that prior to testing, eat gluten so as not to compromise the testing!  Is that true? His primary care doctor told him to eat gluten free prior to testing!  I'm so confused.  Second, I read that celiac disease is genetic or caused by other ways such as surgery.  No family history but Gall bladder removal 7 years ago, maybe?  But how in God's name does something like this crop up and now is so awful he can't go a day without worrying.  He still works in Manhattan and considers himself lucky if he gets there without incident!  Advice from those who know would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!
    • Scott Adams
You've done an excellent job of meticulously tracking the rash's unpredictable behavior, from its symmetrical spread and stubborn scabbing to the potential triggers you've identified, like the asthma medication and dietary changes. It's particularly telling that the rash seems to flare with wheat consumption, even though your initial blood test was negative—as you've noted, being off wheat before a test can sometimes lead to a false negative, and your description of the other symptoms—joint pain, brain fog, stomach issues—is very compelling. The symmetry of the rash is a crucial detail that often points toward an internal cause, such as an autoimmune response or a systemic reaction, rather than just an external irritant like a plant or mites. I hope your doctor tomorrow takes the time to listen carefully to all of this evidence you've gathered and works with you to find some real answers and effective relief. Don't be discouraged if the rash fluctuates; your detailed history is the most valuable tool you have for getting an accurate diagnosis.
    • Scott Adams
In this case the beer is excellent, but for those who are super sensitive it is likely better to go the full gluten-free beer route. Lakefront Brewery (another sponsor!) has good gluten-free beer made without any gluten ingredients.
    • trents
Welcome to the forum, @catsrlife! Celiac disease can be diagnosed without committing to a full-blown "gluten challenge" if you get a skin biopsy done during an active outbreak of dermatitis herpetiformis, assuming that is what is causing the rash. There is no other known cause for dermatitis herpetiformis so it is definitive for celiac disease. You would need to find a dermatologist who is familiar with doing the biopsy correctly, however. The samples need to be taken next to the pustules, not on them . . . a mistake many dermatologists make when biopsying for dermatitis herpetiformis.
