Does Celiac affect our teeth and gums? My sister (undiagnosed and in extreme denial) just went to the dentist and has gum disease, 9 cavities, etc. tc. I told her I thought Celiac contributed to that and she might get less tartar and the like if she quit gluten. I'm trying to convince her to get tested....was I totally lying? Or did I read this someplace?

celiac disease is known to cause tooth enamel defects which can lead to numerous cavities.

I have really bad gums. I've convinced my dentist to give me 6 months gluten free to see if my gums improve. It seems to me that the whole body inflammation that comes along with gluten intolerence could affect a lot of things.

My gum problems cleared right up when I stopped gluten.

Please see the following link to another board topc I started last week - Tooth problems seem to be very common in the Celiac world - good luck! :)

What? My teeth are WORSE. There are molars I can't even touch as I think there is no longer any enamel on them at all....just went to the dentist and he sort of dismissed it. Can anything be done about this? My teeth are killing me! Gums have been receding for years and continue to recede. I think one day my teeth will fall out of my head, when I'm really old, how scary is that.

Am going to confess.....I am a bedtime eater  - for years, after brushing teeth and settling in, I start eating my snack (was pretzels for years *sniff* and then rice cakes, tortilla chips, whatever) and so drift to sleep without brushing my teeth again. ....this CAN'T be good.....

My gum problems cleared up - pre-gingivitis. If you have enamel problems, that is a different issue.

I belive that celiac afffects gums. My gums started receding about eight years ago and I had a very bad dentist so I didn't listen to my gut, anyways that's another story. But, no one in my family has gum recession and I have had dental coverage my whole life. So, I took very good care of my teeth and gums. I'm supposed to have two gum grafts done, but my insurance doesn't cover enough of the large price tag, so sometime in the future I will have it done.

My gums and my son's teeth are terrible. I now think that my grandmother had celiac disease. She had to have all of her teeth pulled in her late 20's because of horrible gum disease and infection. That was over 70 years ago, though. I didn't realize this until recently when I started complaining of my gums to my Dad. Thank goodness for modern dental care! I am very strict about brushing for us and we still have problems.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
