My Sons Doc Visit Yesterday

Yeah....went to his GP and the GP said you know with your history and then

with him never having had a "hard stool" the couple of times he's gotten violently ill eating pasta, the moodiness, the belly, only having grown half an inch to maybe a full inch in a year....I want him right out

at a gastro asap before I order anything else, because while it may not be celiac (although its likely he said) he could have a really bad lactose allergy that has just not made him "sickly"

So the doc did'nt want to put him throuh anything else, because the GI doc would run what ver else he wants and then he wants to talk to him about diet and such. He said for me not to change his diet though at this stage although, regardless of blood test and such being positive or not, it could skew some of the other things the GI doc might want to run.

I don't know, if they suspect celiac, and the blood is negative, or if its positive...I will not consent to a biopsy at this age without trying the diet first. Am I offbase here? I think its silly at this stage, and age to put him out for something potentially dangerous when we could try diet for a couple of months and see if there is improvement.

Can any moms and dads chime in?

He had a celiac panel and sed rate done yesterday but the results are not back....

My children have responded to the diet. One of them has had negative bloodwork in the past and one has never done the blood tests. We are not going to do the biopsy because, like you said, why put them through that when we know what to do. In our case, a negative biopsy wouldn't change anything.

Your doctor was right in saying not to put him on the diet yet if you think you may do a biopsy. The thing about doing a biopsy after being gluten-free for any length of time is that it skews the results. If the damage wasn't bad yet or just patchy, and the fact that he is a young child, the damage would heal fairly quickly and they might not catch it on the biopsy. To have the biopsy done after being on the diet, you would have to put him back on a full gluten diet for 3 months to have a chance at having accurate results.

Now, if his blood results turn up positive, IMO there is no reason to do a biopsy and you might think about going straight to the diet.

I would at least keep him on gluten until his bloods come back and you see the gastro doc. Good luck!

sounds like you have a GP that is on top of things!

I agree with you. I am getting ready to have my son tested and no matter what he will not be biopsied. When they are adults fine. I guess there might be some cases where it would be a good idea to biopsy on a child, but you have to weigh it. JMHO

I just wanted to put my 2 cents in. I agree wait until the lab results come back then go gluten free. We too did not bx and I have never regreted it. The doctors agreed after seeing him grow and gain weight that he was celiac. Mind you it took a few years, but they all agree and my littlest child is now doing the same thing at 5 yrs. so we are doing the gluten free diet without even bothering with a GI. Just my 2 cents.

In my opinion, since you've had the blood drawn, and won't do a biopsy anyway (and I agree with that decision), you might as well put him on the diet right now! I see no good reasons not to.

Also, at the age of three, there are many false negatives, both for the blood work, but especially for a biopsy. The diet test is most valid with little kids anyway.

So I've been dealing with chasing the name celiac because of my body actively dealing with health issues related to celiac though not eating. Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?

I've noticed with my age and menopause my smell for bread gives me severe migraines and I know this. Its alarming that there are all these fabulous bakeries, sandwich places pizza places popping up in confined areas.Just the other day I suffered a migraine after I got done with my mri when a guy with a brown paper bag walk in front of me and I smelled that fresh dough bread with tuna, I got a migraine when we got home.I hate im that sensitive. Its alarming these places are popping up in airports as well.I just saw on the news that the airport ( can't remember which  one)was going to have a fabulous smelling bakery. Not for sensitive celiacs, this can alter their health during their travel which isn't safe. More awareness really NEEDS to be promoted, so much more than just a food consumption!FYI I did write to Stanislaus to let them know my thoughts on the medical field not knowing much about celiac and how it affects one.I also did message my gi the 3 specialist names that was given on previous post on questions on celiac. I pray its not on deaf door.
