It went so well! We went to the fair, and, even though the smell of the bloomin' onions (oh god...) about got me, I wasn't really attempted to eating anything that I shouldn't. My boyfriend is caring and worries about me. It was really nice. One of the few social events were gluten wasn't a major presense.

Congrats! I know my first time eating out after dx was scary :P

Just make sure if your bf eats gluten, that he cleans his mouth before you kiss him :)

My husband will usually chew a piece of gum after he eats and we're not at home. He'll brush sometimes, cuz I'm still not sure how well gum removes food. But that was a weird conversation to have. Just let him know you don't want to get sick from something he ate :)

Good luck on many more gluten-free dates!

That is a very good point! I never even thought about cc that way.....

There is so much to this, I'm finding I learn something new every day.

I'd like to clarify: Is the pain you describe in the area just below your chest constant, or does it only appear when you start moving?

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
