Metamucil Question

Just recently diagnosed with celiac ( 3 days ago) Trying to figure what I can and can"t, but can't find any information related to Metamucil fiber supplement. Have been taking it about 9 months per MD order with good results.

Second question-- I have noticed there is information that you can buy and dowload to your PC about gluten free foods, price from &19 to $118. Anyone familiar with this info. and if so is it worth the investment?

Thanks in advance for any helpfull info.

last I checked, Metamucil was gluten-free. There are also several generic versions that are gluten-free. You are new at this, so my best advice is to make sure you check with the manufacturer on everything. If you are on other meds, talk to your pharmacist and have them make a note on your file to verify every time they fill an order. Most are pretty good about this. Use those 800 numbers on the bottle...they are worth their weight in gold. Just listen carefully not only to what they say, but how they say it. If the person on the other end of the phone sounds unsure, press for more information.

Although Metamucil may be gluten free it causes me pain.

Metamucil is definitely gluten free and works great for me.

Ursa Major Collaborator

Metamucil is sweetened with Aspartame (even though the ingredients list won't tell you that, my pharmacist called).

Konsyl is what my gastro reccommended for me, it's 100% pure psyllium husks (same as metamucil), but it has no sweeteners in it at all. It's also gluten-free.

I have the Clan Thompson list for my palm and I really like it, definitely worth the investment.

I buy psyllium husks and sprinkle a teaspoon full on my breakfast and also add them to some of my cooking. Metamucil is just psyllium husks with additives; I don't need the additives so I just go to the original source. Much cheaper. As with Metamucil, when using psyllium husks you need to drink extra water to help bulk them up.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
