okay so i know that i have seen posts on here about a bruised feeling in the stomach after being glutened which i definitely experience but does anyone ever get a stinging pain in their chest? i used to get it a lot before going gluten free (like at least 4 times a week) and it would last all day, sometimes for multiple days, with nothin to ease the pain. well its not so much painful as it is uncomfortable and annoying. i have tried a number of different over the counte drugs including gas-x but nothing has helped. i have been gluten free for a month, still not feeling great, but getting there. for almost 3 days now i have had that same pain right by my left breast. i took gas-x 2 days ago which obviously didn't help considering i still have the pain. i am almost 100 percent sure i did not have gluten. could it be lactose? soy? casein? nerves? has anyone else had this before? oh and by the way last night like an idiot i had ice cream and took 2 lactaid with it and im sick as a dog today. what the heck?

Are you absolutely positive that the GasX is gluten-free? There are unfortunately many 'tummy' meds that are not gluten free. Also check all your other meds OTC and Scripts, your druggist can do this for you. It can take a while to heal but if this becomes real troublesome don't be afraid to check with your doctor about it.

well this isn't probably the smartest thing. but i know that teh gas-x softgels are gluten free. i have the targe brand. i was assuming they were okay as they both have the same active ingredients. i guess i need to be more careful!!

I always call the manufacturor for everything. It makes me feel a bit obsessive but it has been months now since I have had a glutening so for me it is worth it. It is actually the inactive ingredients that we need to worry about if possible try to find OTC stuff that is marked gluten-free. I hope you feel better soon.

I know what you're talking about with the sharp chest pain. I used to get it all the time and it would just stay with me the whole day. I think my doctor thought I was crazy when I mentioned it. ;) I'm not sure what causes this, but I'd be interested to find out. The pain has seemed to go away since I went gluten free. I tried cutting out lactose and soy at first and then slowly introducing it back in to see if I had any problems with it. The lactose makes me sick to my stomach but doesn't cause the sharp chest pains. Maybe you could experiment by taking those out of your diet for awhile and see if it helps...

The off-brand or store brand is not exactly the same as the name brand even though the active ingredient is the same. The binders, etc. might be different. It's these other ingredients that might have gluten, as Ravenwoodglass said. I only buy brands I've checked out.

Could the chest pain be acid reflux?

ditto

Please ask your doctor! I really don't think online forums are a good place for medical advice even if it is celiac related. It might be something serious or it might be as simple as reflux. The thing is, we don't know, only a physician can tell you, and I wouldn't automatically assume that it is food intolerance related, possible, but you never know.

thank you everyone. i actually feel some relief. i think dairy and soy give me problems so im just going to leave them out completely. and i even went to a normal supermarket and didn't have a panic attack. i literally said out loud while walking from my car to the store, "i can do this. don't freak out". i pretty much stayed in the vegetable section and got some turkey breast but it was a huge improvement. i feel like i go to the doctor so often already and have a gazillion things already wrong with me, im afraid to hear that there is something else i need to worry about. i think i'll see if it happens again and if so then i'll go to the doctor. when i first went to the GI that was one of the symptoms I had orginally went to him for, aside from the very irregular stomach and indigestion/pain by my sternum. He first said I have IBS and then after tests, Celiac. I guess i need to be even more careful.

There is also something called Costocontritis that is very common. It's the inflamation of the costo region which is around the breast bone. Actually, it's the ligaments between the rib cage and breastbone. It's best to get this kind of thing checked out with your doctor.

I thought I had read on here that gas-x is not gluten free?

:unsure::lol: I've said the exact same thing, whispering it to myself, then thinking, "Now stop talking to yourself!".

About the pain, you don't have arthritis do you? Play alot of tennis/racketball?

I have what Viola mentioned - although mine's got a H and a D in there too :P , costochondritis. I have it from long term rheumatoid but alot of the time they don't really know why or where it comes from. And as long as you don't have a bigger problem causing it, it tends to just go away after awhile.

I used to have similar pains....very similar to what Shirley mentioned. I mentioned it to my OB-GYN and he said I probably have fibrocystic breasts (and affects the surrounding areas in terms of pain) and that reducing caffeine for some women helps. Sure enough, I cut back my caffeine and that has helped dramatically! If you drink any amount of caffeine, it is worth a shot.

Just my two cents! Hope you feel better girl!

It definitely could be Costochondritis...don't know if I spelled that right. Google it...sounds a lot like your symptoms and it's not dangerous.

I agree with @trents that the IgA you listed sounds like a total IgA, not celiac-specific, if 114 is normal.  Were any other antibody tests run?
    • Russ H
What you describe is seronegative villous atrophy (negative antibody tests but positive biopsy). It is uncommon in coeliac disease, and there are other causes, but the most common cause is coeliac disease. I would pursue this with your healthcare provider if possible. Based on clinical history, test results and possible genetic testing for susceptibility to coeliac disease it should be possible to give a diagnosis. There is a bit more here: Seronegative coeliac disease

If you are still eating gluten you could get a celiac disease blood panel done, but I agree with @trents and the gold standard for diagnosing celiac disease would be your endoscopy results. Is it possible they did do a celiac disease panel before your biopsy? This would be the normal chain of events. This article might be helpful. It breaks down each type of test, and what a positive results means in terms of the probability that you might have celiac disease. One test that always needs to be done is the IgA Levels/Deficiency Test (often called "Total IGA") because some people are naturally IGA deficient, and if this is the case, then certain blood tests for celiac disease might be false-negative, and other types of tests need to be done to make an accurate diagnosis. The article includes the "Mayo Clinic Protocol," which is the best overall protocol for results to be ~98% accurate.

Actually, it would be more correct to say that the genetic potential to develop celiac disease is passed down from parents to children. About 40% of the general population has the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% of the general population actually do. But it is also true that the offspring of those who do have active celiac disease are at a considerably higher risk of developing active celiac disease than those of parents who have the genes but don't develop the disease. Some recent, larger studies put the risk at near 50% for the first degree relatives of those who have active celiac disease.

Hello everyone! Been a while since I posted. The past few moths have been the best by for recovery for myself. I have been the least bloated I have ever been, my constant throat clearing is almost gone, I have stopped almost all medication I was prevously taking (was taking vyvanse for adhd, pristiq for anxiety,fomotadine/blexten for histamine blockers and singulair). Only thing I take now is Tecta. I also no longer get any rashes after eating. Things are going very well. Most success came actually once I upped my B12 daily dose to 5,000 mcg. I do have one thing I am un able to figure out and want to see if anyone else has this issue or has experience working around it. Ever since I was born I have always had a issue getting fruits and veggies down. No matter how hard I tried, it would always result in gagging or throwing up. Always just thought I was a picky eater. Now that my stomach and system has healed enough that I can feel when something is off almost istantly, I notice that after eating most fruits (sometimes I am ok with bananas) and veggies, my stomach instantly starts burning and my heart starts to pound and I get really anxious as if my body doesnt know what to do with what just enetered it. So I am thinking now that this is what probably was going on when I was born and my body started rejecting it before which caused this weird sensory issue with it causing the gagging. Hoping someone has some exprience with this as well because I would love to be able to enjoy a nice fruit smoothie once in a while haha. Thanks everyone!
