Actually, I didn't meet John until about a year and a few months after he got better. We met at the hospital where we both work. He took a job in the lab where I worked. He was on 3rd shift for a long time and eventually went to 2nd shift. That was the shift I worked.

We got to know each other and he asked me out on a date. We went to a bar and then went back to my house and just sat and talked and he told me that night he was going to marry me. I at the time thought nothing of it. All my friends have told me, they knew he was the one.

Amanda - this is disconcerting - he has been sick so much! Um....I'm not sure - is HE gluten-free? Is he Celiac? Before I removed gluten, I was constantly sick, terrible sore throats about every two months that turned into bronchitis or something awful. Two Christmases ago, I was in the emergency room - TWICE - with a severe kidney infection - thought I was DYING. I'm so happy to say that was the LAST time I was sick! :)

Just wondering about John - it does seem like he has a compromised immune system....

At one point before I got diagnosed I was in the ER with what they said was severe gastrtitis....Man was I in pain, I was hunched over....I thought I was going to die too. It was very scary.

Yes, Tom! Open Original Shared Link tastes alot better than it looks :D

John is such a clean person (he loves to clean, when he gets better I will volunteer him to come to your house and clean)

Does he do trans-atlantic volunteering???? ;)

Nikki- he has always wanted to travel across the pond...I will ask :)

:o oh good Lord! That would totally freak me out.......in fact if they say that instantly - I just get rid of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps will re-think that theory

AManda - I also didn't know John had had cancer! good gawd, do you mind telling us what kind?

My own Stinker, as most of you know, is a lymphoma survivor and went through chemo. (I am barking mad) And, she actually has never been the same....goes through periods of what seems like total sickness and exhaustion, each time I think I'll lose her, each time she makes it through (hence the name, Dog Who Will Not Die). Her bowels actually have never quite been the same since her chemo......and she pants, constantly pants, even when it's 45 degrees outside....always hot since then.........

Do you have John on immune-boosting vitamins? When I was teaching and ALWAYS sick, I started a regimen that really helped......lots of C, zinc, and pure garlic capsules, and an anti-oxidant. really helped......

Does he do trans-atlantic volunteering???? ;)

NOOOOOOOOT so fast, you saucy minx.........only AFTER he's finished with MY squalid house! ;)

all right.....now I"M heading out to shop.........zoigs!!!!

John had a germ cell tumor which is a form of testicular cancer but his tumor never made it down to that region. instead he had a grapefruit sized tumor around his lungs and heart. He did 6-months of high dose chemo and then had surgery to remove the tumor. They wanted to kill the tumor and then remove it so there would not be the chance the cancer cells would spread.

He still has a few issues regarding the chemo, he has very bad neuropathy especially in his feet, the nerves are growing back but very slowing so he is taking pain meds (narcotics) for that. He was told they may never grow back fully and he may always have the pain. His dr and he have both said things have gotten better. His fingertips will always be numb. His liver is in ok shape, chemo especially high dose can ruin a liver. He has to be careful with alcohol, and if he was to drink everyday in 10 yrs he would need a liver transplant...scary! John rarely drinks.

He does take vitamins. He usually is pretty well, it just seems since the pneumonia he cannot get back to a good spot. It does seem like there are a lot of people I know sick like him, so he is probably picking up common colds...He works in a hospital and he delivers packages to the floors and offices here, so he comes in contact with more sick people than I do...

Wow Amanda, John's really been through a lot. I will remember him in my prayers that he continue to do well (and stop catching these pesky viruses!) :)

Here's another tidbit of info, John recently quit smoking (cold turkey) yes the boy was dumb and did start smoking after cancer...I always yelled about that but...the girl next to me also quit smoking in the spring and she says since then she catches all the little colds and things she never usually had.

:o Well THIS may be the answer! I have read from several people on here that smoking is an immunosuppresant.....so now that he's quit, he'll catch everything! I think Patti may know something about this...........

Wow, he HAS been through a lot! Good Lord! Praying he gets better and better all the time. At least now he has a really good wife. :)

I am back!!!!!!!!!!! not too bad today. The girls went with me.....they were bored and wanted an outing. So......it really wasn't too exciting for them, they sat in the car for one solid hour while mommy made two stops. *yawn* they really thought it would be more exciting than that.

 Well........it's not a REAL musical, is it? You know, that wretched and quite popular format where SINGING is hideously interjected in the middle of perfectly normal speech patterns

My friend Lauren actually saw the two perform in southern California, she was so taken with it.

I hope everyone had a very happy Christmas! I had a lot of fun. I was undiagnosed last Christmas so this year was about a million times better.

My fiance's sister had a baby boy, Joshua, yesterday. He is beautiful and such a Christmas blessing! Ryan's other nieces and nephew call me Auntie Alex and I can't wait until we're married and I'm officially their aunt.

edit: My post seems a little trivial now that I read the preceding Bhutto conversation

There's a Peter sighting, too! Are things finally slowing down a bit? Did you finally get some rest today?

Yesterday was a total day of rest. The store was closed for Boxing Day. Today we went in together to take down the Christmas merchandise displays and decorations that we have been looking at since Halloween. We made a short day of it, leaving about 1:30. Home by two.

Christmas was good. We had my entire family over for a gluten-free dinner

After we had finished the main course, I said something about the meal being entirely gluten-free. My brothers asked about the stuffing for the turkey, and the garlic toast. They had not noticed anything unusual. I explained how we made gluten-free stuffing and gluten-free garlic toast, and that the shortbread about to be served was also gluten-free. Gluten-free does not mean inedible, and Rob and Alan were the proof. On a subliminal level they knew about my dietary needs, but when they ate "my" food they did not notice that is was different.

And for those who noticed my gravy question, I showed Jacquie the whole thread. I don't know which bits of advice she took, but the gravy was the best we've had in seven years of gluten-free turkey. Thanks to all who contributed.

Oh, yeah, Boxing Day ... here, the 26th is the biggest shopping day of the year, LOL! My kids went to the Mall .... they were there for HOURS ... that was because they had all these gift cards and cash to spend!!! There was no way I was braving the Mall on the 26th! Besides, it was a nice, quiet day at home with only 2 kids and hubby. :)

Hi @JulieRe.  I just found your post.  It seems that I am also experiencing thrush, and my doctor believes that I have fungal overgrowth in my gut, which is most likely candida.  I'm seeing my GI doctor next week, so I'm hoping she can diagnose and confirm this and then give me an antifungal treatment.  In the meantime, I have been working with a functional medicine doctor, doing a candida cleanse and taking vitamins. It's already helping to make me feel better (with some ups and downs, of course), so I do think the yeast is definitely a problem for me on top of my celiac disease and I'm hoping my GI doctor can look into this a bit further.  So, how about you?  Did the candida come back, or is it still gone following your fluconazole treatment?  Also, was it awful to take fluconazole?  I understand that taking an antifungal can cause a reaction that sometimes makes people feel sick while they're taking it.  I hope you're doing better still !

I'm so sorry you're going through this—the "gluten challenge" is notoriously brutal, and it's awful to deliberately make yourself sick when you've already found the answer. For the joint pain, many people find that over-the-counter anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen can help take the edge off, and using heating pads or warm baths can provide some direct relief for the aches. For the digestive misery, stick to simple, easy-to-digest foods (like plain rice, bananas, and bone broth) and drink plenty of water and electrolytes to stay hydrated. It feels like the longest month ever, but you are doing the right thing to get a clear diagnosis, which can be crucial for your long-term health and getting the proper care. Hang in there; you can get through this! This article, and the comments below it, may be helpful:

Daura Damm (a sponsor here) uses AN-PEP enzymes and filtering in their brewing process to reduce/remove gluten, and it actually tests below 10ppm (I've see a document where they claim 5ppm).

This topic has come up before on this forum and has been researched. No GMO wheat, barley and rye are commercially available in the USA. Any modifications are from hybridization, not laboratory genetic modification. Better toleration of wheat, barley and rye products in other countries is thought to be due to use of heirloom varieties of these cereal grains as opposed to the hybrids used in the USA which contain much larger amounts of gluten.
