Maybe we'll just send this book all over the world, to all the sillies? Except Emily, of course.......who now also has two copies......... <twilightzone, indeed! put one atop yer car, Em, and see what happens.......>

Well, I'll tell ya for certain what would not happen....DH would not be racing out, checking my parking space, accosting the store cashiers, retracing my route back home.....uh, nope.<_<

'Tis hard to decipher these moods, I must say. Is it all the Nuggets? Lack of Effexor? The new melatonin I"m taking? the imminent menstrual cycle? So hard to say what causes these things.

Susie, I would strongly suspect that it's all of those things in combination. I was on melatonin briefly to help with jetlag when we went to Europe, and the days that I was on it I certainly felt....different. Not depressed, exactly, but I remember thinking, "why am I not a lot more excited, and happy, about heading overseas? I should be thrilled...." so it certainly affected my mood. Eliminated the spaced-out jetlag feeling, however, so a trade-off I endured....

I LOVE Ativan.

Yes, it's good stuff. It certainly kept my dad quiet and not caring that he was lying in the hospital, alone and bored, for much of the time. He really needed to rest, and I suppose if this kind of drug makes it easier for someone to just lie in bed and do that, well, it should be prescribed. But it sure made him a different man. Not unpleasant or completely unrecognisable....not a sumo wrestler or Lucille Ball or an NBA player, as we all know he has been before.

Tom - is that an Absinthian Chubacabra in your av?:lol:

Yes! I meant to comment on your av, Ptaum...cannot make out details....a monkey holding a cowbell? Mygawd.....is that a rendering of ME while away in the Laurentians??! :o<_<

So, on Saturday I decide to buy some plain Dove shampoo--I've been having a fair amount of bloating, anxious thoughts and my stomach's been off. I'm thinking it's the fragrance in the shampoo/conditioner because, frankly there was no other way it could have been sneaking in.

Here comes the phunny phart--I washed and conditioned my hair with it Sunday morning, and AGAIN Monday before it dawned on me that both bottles were shampoo--I coulda sworn I got shampoo and conditioner <_<

Good news--I think I found the culprit....bad news--I think I need glasses B)

But last night they took him off the ATIVAN they'd been feeding him.....and now my dad's back. :)

:D

OMG - can I please share another Dingo Moment?

Gawd, Susie--see above for my most recent Dingo moment

And PMS, well, I'm just not going there. ;)

Very wise, Peter! :P

Good Morning Sillies!!!!

How us everyone this morning! Its back to work again, the nights are never long enough, but after a 3 weeks hiatus I went back to the gym....Hurrah! Now if only I can keep with it....I was trying on my spring and summer clothes and they were a little tight....sad!

Keep up the good work, Amanda! I've done my Pilates now two days in a row!!!!

Susie, I would strongly suspect that it's all of those things in combination.

I agree....I haven't trusted Hershey's in quite some time. ;)

Janet! You're brilliant....That is absolutely the reason I had only a quarter of my emoticons show up yesterday. Like our government employees, Canadian emoticons (and most European ones, as well, I should think) did not appear due to our official holiday status.

Canadian emoticons?!!

Do you have an :eh?: I don't get to use?

Mygawd.....this is NOT occurring with me. In fact....I cannot GET a slash to appear. I'm getting a blank space for the slashes. There's something international afoot...I bet it's a free trade issue. Anyone in Mexico on here? We can see what's happening down there...:lol:

Yes!! Where is GFinGuadalajara when we need her??

Are these transnationally relocated slashes due to NAPHTA? (North American Punctuational Hiding/Trading Agreement)

"That's me before the surgery"

Sounds like ChickLit to me. :P

It's not subtitled "Diary of the Exhibitionist Princess" is it?

'Tis hard to decipher these moods, I must say. Is it all the Nuggets? Lack of Effexor? The new melatonin I"m taking?

I had great results w/ melatonin in the 90s.

Suddenly sleeping so well, my mood and brain function increased so much that during a re-org at work, 3 potential bosses were fighting over me

And I loved the vivid wackl dreams that were a bonus.

OMG - what have the boys done to that chocolate egg thingy in your av?

 yes Nikki! Why am I thinking of Mr. Potato Head!??

And speaking of avs......

Tom - is that an Absinthian Chubacabra in your av?:lol:

Another question for GFinGuadalajara!!

Yes! I meant to comment on your av, Ptaum...cannot make out details....a monkey holding a cowbell? Mygawd.....is that a rendering of ME while away in the Laurentians??! :o<_<

Didja see that his "stick-thingy" looks like a femur?

It's the label on my <ahem> THIRD brand of Absinthe!!!!!

Went to the store of Mo'BevThanYouCanHandle for Redbridge but they were OUT!!!!! da NOIV!!!

Disappointment quickly morphed into excitement at the discovery of the elusive St George Absinthe Verte.

It's the only one made in the U.S., and is thus far made in small batches.

Only had a small taste last night. No summoning of the Phaerie yet.

Ok, now here is a chuckle today....We had a fire alarm today in the hospital....these things are sooo loud! Anyway, I was on the pot piddling when it went off...almost fell right off....Horrible!

Had to share, sorry!

The bathroom alarms should be a little less loud, they could really scare the $hit out of you

The Canadian emoticons are now at par with your American ones. Seems like yesterday that I had to post two smileys to have one appear...

My favorite Cemoticon, and one to which you yanks haven't access, is the little polite face that appears very self-conscious and niave....true Canadiana. A cross between  and  and  .....

All Canada does is import rules...we never export a thing!

Actually, DH was reading it at the same time as DD and me (it got very ridiculous...all of us picking up a copy, unfolding the marked page, moving the bookmark)... When Sophie went to bed, DH and I would each have our own copy, so we'd be lying in bed reading the same book. Would have made a terrific photo for something.....:lol:

janet- Glad the tonsils came out obediently- they can be quite fresh!!!!!!!! Ice cream?

Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cuz we all love him. Emily- Ggotta tell you that EVERY time I see a standard poodle I cackle cuz all I can think is SUBstandard poodle

No, not everyone knows about this place, I suspect. But when you go, stop at Big Sur Bakery - it's called Loma Linda and there is the kookiest store there, a kooky but fabulous outdoor garden/gallery/performance area, and many local nuts. I stop in there every time. They told us to climb in this newly-built tree-house thingy, and we did.

That is SUCH a cool picture. I love the local nuts- Bolinas has EXCELLENT ones!

BUT YOU'RE BOTH SMOKING THOSE VILE THINGS????????

Screw that SUSAN JANE!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not quittin' 'til you pledge to also!!!!!!!

Ohhh...you are in TROUBLE!!!!!!! Ptaum- we gotta talk about this smoking thing!!!

Susie . . . my totally unsolicited advice . . . give up the nutmeg cinnamon clove cigarettes and keep the chocolate.

   Or try smoking the Green faerie....I hear it's quite wonderful. i grew some in my backyard last summer (just a type of salvia) but kept finding all these hippie dudes out back every night playing drums and well, frankly, it gt embarassing when they set up a nudist colony so I burned it.

Whoa......Don't think I know too many guys who'd start turning up at the mention of menstruation. Think we should stick with tassel-twirling....

I do miss King Richard- hang on- let me let out the mating call of the founder:

Send me your extra Castle copy, toot sweet. I'm heading out on spring break in about two weeks and will need something to read on the long ride to Bev's Boston.

It's one of my favorite books EVER, and I'm not even finished. I find it absolutely fascinating, the way these rather feral parents raised their kids. Quite a dichotomy - a compelling and wonderful free-spirited, adventuresome rebelliousness and TOTAL non-coddling of the kids....but it borders on - or is distinctly, sometimes - child abuse. I think the kids all turned out to be quite resilient....still looking into that. The author herself paid for her own college education at Barnard.

I REALLY want more books that are this riveting....I have about, oh, say, 20 or 30 I'm reading here that I can't even bother to finish, and probably never will.

OMG--for me there was never a question--absolute, blatant abuse, continually. A wonderful read, more so due to the fact that it is autobiographical...but certainly not a laugh a minute. I thought much of what the children were forced to live through was quite horrific....demoralizing...dangerous....

I was quite surprised to see DD reading it for school. Gad, we never had any books like this on our reading list in grade nine, I tell ya. Pure Canadiana (yawn)...Who Has Seen the Wind, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz.....

Times have indeed changed..... <_<

If Bev can fit me into her busy schedule . . . we will be in Boxford from the 5th through the 11th or 12th. We will have some mandatory Bostonian sight-seeing to perform, but we're flexible at this point.

And next year, we are talking about heading out to Washington to see my brother (West Richland) and spend a little time in Seattle . . . Jess's neck of the woods but apparently (based on her profile) she lives in the middle of Puget Sound so we might have to rent a boat.

Thanks again for the detailed explanation. Just to clarify, I actually did have my initial tests done while I was still consuming gluten. I stopped eating gluten only after those tests were completed, and it has now been about 70 days since I went gluten-free. I understand the limitations around diagnosing NCGS and the importance of antibody testing and biopsy for celiac disease. Unfortunately, where I live, access to comprehensive testing (including total IgA and endoscopy with biopsy) is limited, which makes things more complicated. Your explanation about small-bowel damage, nutrient absorption, and iron-deficiency anemia still aligns closely with my history, and it’s been very helpful in understanding what may be going on. I don't wanna get Endoscopy and I can't start eating Gluten again because it's hurt really with severe diarrhea.  I appreciate you taking the time to share such detailed and informative guidance. Thank you so much for this detailed and thoughtful response. I really appreciate you pointing out the relationship between anemia and antibody patterns, and how the high DGP IgG still supports celiac disease in my case. A gluten challenge isn’t something I feel safe attempting due to how severe my reactions were, so your suggestion about genetic testing makes a lot of sense. I’ll look into whether HLA testing is available where I live and discuss it with my doctor. I also appreciate you mentioning gastrointestinal beriberi and thiamine deficiency. This isn’t something any of my doctors have discussed with me, and given my symptoms and nutritional history, it’s definitely worth raising with them. I’ll also ask about correcting deficiencies more comprehensively, including B vitamins alongside iron. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to help. I’ll update the forum as I make progress.
    • knitty kitty
Blood tests for thiamine are unreliable.  The nutrients from your food get absorbed into the bloodstream and travel around the body.  So, a steak dinner can falsely raise thiamine blood levels in the following days.  Besides, thiamine is utilized inside cells where stores of thiamine are impossible to measure. A better test to ask for is the Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test.  But even that test has been questioned as to accuracy.  It is expensive and takes time to do.   Because of the discrepancies with thiamine tests and urgency with correcting thiamine deficiency, the World Health Organization recommends giving thiamine for several weeks and looking for health improvement.  Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   Many doctors are not given sufficient education in nutrition and deficiency symptoms, and may not be familiar with how often they occur in Celiac disease.  B12 and Vitamin D can be stored for as long as a year in the liver, so not having deficiencies in these two vitamins is not a good indicator of the status of the other seven water soluble B vitamins.  It is possible to have deficiency symptoms BEFORE there's changes in the blood levels.   Ask your doctor about Benfotiamine, a form of thiamine that is better absorbed than Thiamine Mononitrate.  Thiamine Mononitrate is used in many vitamins because it is shelf-stable, a form of thiamine that won't break down sitting around on a store shelf.  This form is difficult for the body to turn into a usable form.  Only thirty percent is absorbed in the intestine, and less is actually used.   Thiamine interacts with all of the other B vitamins, so they should all be supplemented together.  Magnesium is needed to make life sustaining enzymes with thiamine, so a magnesium supplement should be added if magnesium levels are low.   Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  There's no harm in trying.
    • lizzie42
Neither of them were anemic 6 months after the Celiac diagnosis. His other vitamin levels (d, B12) were never low. My daughters levels were normal after the first 6 months. Is the thiamine test just called thiamine?
    • knitty kitty
Yes, I do think they need a Thiamine supplement at least. Especially since they eat red meat only occasionally. Most fruits and vegetables are not good sources of Thiamine.  Legumes (beans) do contain thiamine.  Fruits and veggies do have some of the other B vitamins, but thiamine B 1 and  Cobalamine B12 are mostly found in meats.  Meat, especially organ meats like liver, are the best sources of Thiamine, B12, and the six other B vitamins and important minerals like iron.   Thiamine has antibacterial and antiviral properties.  Thiamine is important to our immune systems.  We need more thiamine when we're physically ill or injured, when we're under stress emotionally, and when we exercise, especially outside in hot weather.  We need thiamine and other B vitamins like Niacin B 3 to keep our gastrointestinal tract healthy.  We can't store thiamine for very long.  We can get low in thiamine within three days.  Symptoms can appear suddenly when a high carbohydrate diet is consumed.  (Rice and beans are high in carbohydrates.)  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so symptoms can wax and wane depending on what one eats.  The earliest symptoms like fatigue and anxiety are easily contributed to other things or life events and dismissed.   Correcting nutritional deficiencies needs to be done quickly, especially in children, so their growth isn't stunted.  Nutritional deficiencies can affect intelligence.  Vitamin D deficiency can cause short stature and poor bone formation.   Is your son taking anything for the anemia?  Is the anemia caused by B12 or iron deficiency?
    • lizzie42
Thank you! That's helpful. My kids eat very little processed food. Tons of fruit, vegetables, cheese, eggs and occasional red meat. We do a lot of rice and bean bowls, stir fry, etc.  Do you think with all the fruits and vegetables they need a vitamin supplement? I feel like their diet is pretty healthy and balanced with very limited processed food. The only processed food they eat regularly is a bowl of Cheerios here and there.  Could shaking legs be a symptom of just a one-time gluten exposure? I guess there's no way to know for sure if they're getting absolutely zero exposure because they do go to school a couple times a week. We do homeschool but my son does a shared school 2x a week and my daughter does a morning Pre-K 3 x a week.  At home our entire house is strictly gluten free and it is extremely rare for us to eat out. If we eat at someone else's house I usually just bring their food. When we have play dates we bring all the snacks, etc. I try to be really careful since they're still growing. They also, of course, catch kids viruses all the time so I  want to make sure I know whether they're just sick or they've had gluten. It can be pretty confusing when they're pretty young to even be explaining their symptoms!
