LISA!!!!!!!!!! Loved yer day...........and methinks that it's quite a money-saving technique, to go garage-saleing on motorcycle - - much harder to carry the furniture home, eh?

So - Lisa's not meant to live in the midwest and I am most SOITANTLY not meant to live in this gawd-forsaken Valley of Hell  How can we escape? WE must formulate a plan..........

My hubby says that's the whole point.........he'll go anywhere if it means riding his bike, and I can't buy anything I can't carry! :P

Yes.........must escape.........we need a beach, hot tub, sun porch, not too cold, not too hot, no snow............what else?

:lol: - Lisa, you have found yer calling!!! Now we must figure out how you can get a job and get paid for this stuff!!

Obviously back from book club . . . it was an interesting night. I wouldn't say it was "fun" as I felt a little anxious like she was going to give us a pop quiz or sumptin'. Also, the hostess and I enjoyed the book the most and there was some pressure there to carry the conversation. One of the fellow clubbers who ALWAYS has a lot to say didn't say a word . . . she liked the book the least out of the seven of us there.

Anyway, the book is Queen of the Road by Doreen Orion. At the back of the book, she says that she is interested in participating in book club discussions by speaker phone unless she is actually in the area and then she will attend in person. You contact her through her website. She asked us to send a photo of our group and she will post it in her blog. All in all, pretty cool.

Morning Sillies---

I love Lisa's summaries!!!! Adore them!!!!

Another morning and this Silly is feel very-un well. Nasty sore throat, sleepy, stuffy....ugh!!!! Even Allegra is not helping.....all I want to do is climb back into bed.

I did see the most wonderful fall picture today--pretty tree with the brightest red leaves and some mixed in on very green grass....Very Fotogenic if ya ask me.

Let's hear it for Hump Day!!!!!

I guess thats all for now--be back in a bit!!!

Good morning, Sillies!

Well, we have another minority Conservative government, lead again by my conspicuously short-thumbed prime minister. Interesting, I've been able to find not a single photo of the opposition leader, who could possibly have stolen the election away from Stephen Harper, showing his thumbs.

Now, either he has conspicuously tiny thumbs.. . . . ....or has no idea of the anatomical. . .. relationship. . . . ...that exists with the male thumb, and therefore didn't capitalize. Must continue looking for pic of this. . . . ....

POeter, have you noticed the length of Stephen Dion's thumbs?:rolleyes:

Michael Ignatieff, who may well take over as leader of the opposition after this abysmal result for the Liberals, seems privy to the rule . .. . . ....

http://www.andykeller.com/ignatieff-thumbs.webp

Ho hum. .. . .methinks this will be a thumb-noticing day .. . ...... <_<

Janet! I will go take a look at Doreen Orion's blog to catch you and your bookies!

Now, you are certain, are you, that it was not Suzanne Somers disguising her voice? Did she keep asking if there was a Julie there, again and again?

Lei-sah's summaries are hee-laree-us!!!

I had never heard of it until now.......had to google it. Looks like it's mostly a British thing, although I saw it mentioned that it can be adapted to other regional signs.

What little I viewed, some signs were similar to ASL.

Some very basic signs Open Original Shared Link....was v.useful for my son AND between Tel and I.....e.g at a school meeting...I would (discretely) sign to him 'bored'.....he would sign back 'sleepy'

May-jah drool face!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How did it turn out?!?!?!

Would love this recipe too ;)

Hold fire!!!...the toffee apple cake has been unavoidably delayed until this evening's dinner........a critique will follow.....

You need 1 mango, heavy whipping cream, strawberries, or any other fruit you like (i.e. banana, pineapple, raspberries)

I whip the cream in one bowl and set aside. Then peel and cut up the mango and puree it (in a blender, food processor, or with one of those hand held mixers) and set that aside. Then slice the strawberries. If you want to add banana and pineapple, slice them too.

Then I get a tall parfait glass and layer everything. I start with a couple spoonfulls of whipped cream and spread it out on the bottom of the glass, then carefully spoon in a layer of pureed mango on top of that, then I drop in a layer of sliced strawberries (add the banana and pinapple after this if using) then repeat starting with another layer of cream. I keep layering until I get all the way to the top of the glass.

AND...

The spice cake teamed with sauteed apples sounds absolutely devine--and fer the "whip", I could do a "custard" made with almond milk......I'm going to run wif this truffle (or is it trifle? )idea of yours :lol:

I'm still thinking about this dessert..... how about cake, sauteed apples (or the bananas sound good, too) and a hard sauce?

:P:P:P

Okay, everybody. Yesterday afternoon, I get home from work and Elsie's OTHER eye is running with lovely mucous. Time to put $ointment in it, as well.

This morning, I gave Gus a big hug and noticed that his left eye is glued shut.

Crrrrrraaaaap. It would seem we got a misdiagnosis - -there ain't no way this is being caused by trauma/object hitting the eye....it's bloody contagious conjunctivitus, as I had suspected!!

Anyways, this cream is clearing it up - -Elsie's first affected eye is almost completely better.

Blood tests for thiamine are unreliable.  The nutrients from your food get absorbed into the bloodstream and travel around the body.  So, a steak dinner can falsely raise thiamine blood levels in the following days.  Besides, thiamine is utilized inside cells where stores of thiamine are impossible to measure. A better test to ask for is the Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test.  But even that test has been questioned as to accuracy.  It is expensive and takes time to do.   Because of the discrepancies with thiamine tests and urgency with correcting thiamine deficiency, the World Health Organization recommends giving thiamine for several weeks and looking for health improvement.  Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   Many doctors are not given sufficient education in nutrition and deficiency symptoms, and may not be familiar with how often they occur in Celiac disease.  B12 and Vitamin D can be stored for as long as a year in the liver, so not having deficiencies in these two vitamins is not a good indicator of the status of the other seven water soluble B vitamins.  It is possible to have deficiency symptoms BEFORE there's changes in the blood levels.   Ask your doctor about Benfotiamine, a form of thiamine that is better absorbed than Thiamine Mononitrate.  Thiamine Mononitrate is used in many vitamins because it is shelf-stable, a form of thiamine that won't break down sitting around on a store shelf.  This form is difficult for the body to turn into a usable form.  Only thirty percent is absorbed in the intestine, and less is actually used.   Thiamine interacts with all of the other B vitamins, so they should all be supplemented together.  Magnesium is needed to make life sustaining enzymes with thiamine, so a magnesium supplement should be added if magnesium levels are low.   Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  There's no harm in trying.
    • lizzie42
Neither of them were anemic 6 months after the Celiac diagnosis. His other vitamin levels (d, B12) were never low. My daughters levels were normal after the first 6 months. Is the thiamine test just called thiamine?
    • knitty kitty
Yes, I do think they need a Thiamine supplement at least. Especially since they eat red meat only occasionally. Most fruits and vegetables are not good sources of Thiamine.  Legumes (beans) do contain thiamine.  Fruits and veggies do have some of the other B vitamins, but thiamine B 1 and  Cobalamine B12 are mostly found in meats.  Meat, especially organ meats like liver, are the best sources of Thiamine, B12, and the six other B vitamins and important minerals like iron.   Thiamine has antibacterial and antiviral properties.  Thiamine is important to our immune systems.  We need more thiamine when we're physically ill or injured, when we're under stress emotionally, and when we exercise, especially outside in hot weather.  We need thiamine and other B vitamins like Niacin B 3 to keep our gastrointestinal tract healthy.  We can't store thiamine for very long.  We can get low in thiamine within three days.  Symptoms can appear suddenly when a high carbohydrate diet is consumed.  (Rice and beans are high in carbohydrates.)  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so symptoms can wax and wane depending on what one eats.  The earliest symptoms like fatigue and anxiety are easily contributed to other things or life events and dismissed.   Correcting nutritional deficiencies needs to be done quickly, especially in children, so their growth isn't stunted.  Nutritional deficiencies can affect intelligence.  Vitamin D deficiency can cause short stature and poor bone formation.   Is your son taking anything for the anemia?  Is the anemia caused by B12 or iron deficiency?
    • lizzie42
Thank you! That's helpful. My kids eat very little processed food. Tons of fruit, vegetables, cheese, eggs and occasional red meat. We do a lot of rice and bean bowls, stir fry, etc.  Do you think with all the fruits and vegetables they need a vitamin supplement? I feel like their diet is pretty healthy and balanced with very limited processed food. The only processed food they eat regularly is a bowl of Cheerios here and there.  Could shaking legs be a symptom of just a one-time gluten exposure? I guess there's no way to know for sure if they're getting absolutely zero exposure because they do go to school a couple times a week. We do homeschool but my son does a shared school 2x a week and my daughter does a morning Pre-K 3 x a week.  At home our entire house is strictly gluten free and it is extremely rare for us to eat out. If we eat at someone else's house I usually just bring their food. When we have play dates we bring all the snacks, etc. I try to be really careful since they're still growing. They also, of course, catch kids viruses all the time so I  want to make sure I know whether they're just sick or they've had gluten. It can be pretty confusing when they're pretty young to even be explaining their symptoms!

That is interesting, and it's the first time I heard about the umbilical cord beings used for that test. Thanks for sharing!
