Infirm Parents for Dummies.. ....... . . . . . .. . . :rolleyes::(

Em, I hear you. My parents are both 84, and the decline is noticeable, more so in my mother. Jacquie is also dealing with aging parents. Her mother has Alzheimer's Disease and can not be left alone anymore. It is hard watching those you love become less and less capable.

I heard something once which may be a fit in Sillyville for this:

May you live long enough to be a burden to your children.

Thanks for this, POeter. I needed it - - there are always those who have things tougher. My dad has never grappled with the Alzheimer's demon. .. . .this must be absolutely heart-wrenching, to lose a loved parent in such a way, as he/she slowly becomes a complete stranger. Hugs back to you and Jacquie.

Enuff sadness in Da Ville! Someone start talkin' about penii, er sumphin'. . . . . .. ..

Gaacck. I don't know what it is about pineapple, but I just can't get into it. It is more than just sweet--it is cloying.

For the life of me I cannot fathom why otherwise intelligent people would put pineapple on a pizza, along with ham, and actually eat the thing.

Give me bacon, mushrooms, green olives and green peppers. I'll take some gluten-free pepperoni if available, all on gluten-free crust. Lots of mozzarella and some tomato sauce, too. B):)

Me phave, too--except swap out black olives fer the green. I also like pepperoni much better on pizza than sausage (Mark and I disagree on this). Never tried pineapple on pizza--can't fathom it wif tomato sauce  <yuckphace>

Thanks for this, POeter. I needed it - - there are always those who have things tougher. This might sound a tad macabre, but I'm actually a bit jealous of you guys.

See, my dad was NOT an awesome guy. Not most of my life. He was angry, rather mean and abusive, and very difficult to live/work with. During the year he was sick, a great deal of that changed, and I got to have a year with my dad as my Daddy, as loving and kind and wonderful as I knew he always could be. I know exactly how evil his mother was (a woman with whom I will NOT associate), and how extroardinarily hard he worked to improve himself enough just to be the mean bastard I grew up with.

Part of the reason I grieved so hard when he died was that I didn't want to give up the 'new' & improved Daddy I had. So I find myself (uncharitably) jealous of those of you who've been able to live your whole lives with such special parents. I can only imagine how hard it must be to contemplate losing someone who's so deeply imbedded in everything in your life, who's so well loved. I sincerely hope he gets better.

And hey, so when did I become the traveling chef?!?!?! Who's gonna shell out for all that equipment, huh? Don't I get a vote in this?!?!?

It is unbelievably, ridivculously, egregiously HEINOUS, that kinda heat yer talkin' about. Trust me on this.

For four months every year here (or five), walking outside is just about the worst thing imaginable....a hot, scorching oven smacks you and nearly knocks you down every time you exit a building.

I hate living here

BUNNIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o

OMG - I am a little in shock - you've written something taht is almost identical to my story!!! I had my dad for the last year of his life, only. My grieving was so incredibly complicated when he died. And about three months before he did go, he looked at me one day, tears in his eyes, adn said: "I finally found my daughter." *gulp* and I replied: "I finally found my daddy." We had dropped our lifelong weapons of defense, and in his prolonged illness, he softened so.

Bunnie and Souczie--you both brought tears to me eyes. I sometimes think that this is how it might go with my mom and me. A lot of you know there are issues there--but I'd love for the walls to come down now that we're still both here but she just cares about how things look--not real things like feelings and loyalty. :( So complicated...but then, these things always are.....

Hi Jane: You may want to try the D3 I now take. I have reactions to fillers and many additives. Sports Research, it is based in the USA and I have had no bad reactions with this brand. The D3 does have coconut oil but it is non GMO, it is Gluten free, Soy free, Soybean free and Safflower oil free.  I have a cupboard full of supplements that did not agree with me -  I just keep trying and have finally settled on Sports Research. I take NAKA Women's Multi full spectrum, and have not felt sick after taking 2 capsules per day -  it is a Canadian company. I buy both from Amazon. I wish you well in your searching, I know how discouraging it all is. Florence.

highly unlikely  NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else has ever caused me these kinds of symptoms I have no problem with dates, they are a large part of my diet In fact, I eat a very high fiber, very high vegetable and bean diet and have for many years now. It's considered a whole foods plant based or plant forward diet (I do now eat some lean ground turkey but not much) I was off dairy for years but recently had to add back plain yogurt to meet calcium needs that I am not allowed to get from supplements (I have not had any problem with the yogurt)   I eat almost no processed foods. I don't eat out. almost everything I eat, I cook myself I am going to keep a food diary but to be honest, I already know that it's wheat products and also barley that are the problem, which is why I gradually stopped eating and buying them. When I was eating them, like back in early 2024, when I was in the middle of moving and ate out (always had bread or toast or rolls or a sub or pizza) I felt terrible but at that time was so busy and exhausted that I never stopped to think it was the food. Once I was in my new place, I continued to have bread from time to time and had such horrible joint pain that I was preparing for 2 total knee replacements as well as one hip! The surgery could not go forward as I was (and still am) actively losing calcium from my bones. That problem has yet to be properly diagnosed and treated   anyway over time I realized that I felt better when I stopped eating bread. Back at least 3 yrs ago I noticed that regular pasta made me sick so I switched to brown rice pasta and even though it costs a lot more, I really like it.   so gradually I just stopped buying and eating foods with gluten. I stopped getting raisin bran when I was constipated because it made me bloated and it didn't help the constipation any more (used to be a sure bet that it would in the past)   I made cookies and brownies using beans and rolled oats and dates and tahini and I LOVE them and have zero issues eating those I eat 1 or more cans of beans per day easily can eat a pound of broccoli - no problem! Brussels sprouts the same thing.   so yeh it's bread and related foods that are clearly the problem  there is zero doubt in my mind

Thank you for your post, @nanny marley It is interesting what you say about 'It's OK not to sleep'. Worrying about sleeping only makes it much harder to sleep.  One of my relatives is an insomniac and I am sure that is part of the problem.  Whereas I once had a neighbour who, if she couldn't sleep, would simply get up again, make a cup of tea, read, do a sudoku or some other small task, and then go back to bed when she felt sleepy again.  I can't think it did her any harm - she lived  well into her nineties. Last week I decided to try a Floradix Magnesium supplement which seems to be helping me to sleep better.  It is a liquid magnesium supplement, so easy to take.  It is gluten free (unlike the Floradix iron supplement).  Might be worth a try.

It could be a fructan intolerance? How do you do with dates?  https://www.dietvsdisease.org/sorry-your-gluten-sensitivity-is-actually-a-fructan-intolerance/
    • Lkg5
Thank’s for addressing the issue of mushrooms.  I was under the impression that only wild mushrooms were gluten-free.  Have been avoiding cultivated mushrooms for years. Also, the issue of smoked food was informative.  In France last year, where there is hardly any prepared take-out food that is gluten-free, I tried smoked chicken.  Major mistake!
