Is it really that bad to go to a quick-y place? I've always had my mother cut my hair, but she's in Florida and I need a haircut. I haven't paid for a haircut in ten years, so I don't really know what the protocol is. Help! Do I need to spend a hundred bucks for a trim?!?!

They really aren't that bad. We used to go to them all the time.....especially if you're only getting a trim. I wouldn't go for a perm, though.

My hubby used to be a body builder when we were dating....hubba hubba. The muscles in his thighs and butt were so big he couldn't get pants to fit......had to wear polyester. Pants weren't made 'loose fit' back then.

'Morning, Gang!

Ah, bargain haircuts. .... .. . ....I go all the time to First Choice (are they in the States? Not sure).. . ......where they charge fourteen bucks for a cut. With tip it's over sixteen, and I go frequently for trims, so I don't even think the price is really cheap, particularly for DH who hasn't much hair left, or The Ripper, whose trim takes ten minutes. I cannot imagine spending sixty, seventy bucks for a cut, as friends do - - nutty!

I've found one woman who is very good there, and I just go to her.

I really do wonder why she works there, and not at a trendy boutique/spa where she would make four times the money. Perhaps she is a great stylist, but stupid. Hell, that would be okay - - she's trimming my hair, not marking my doctoral thesis... . .. . ....

Group babysitting--interesting.....but who's gonna be in charge of the spankings if he's naughty :o

Sorry Em

(((((Hands over ears)))))) LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA. .. .. . ...Can't hear you!!!!

Thank GAWD for spandex. . .........crap, I've entered middle age JUST at the right time.. . . . .....

Wow, all of the worst of the worst must all move down here. My kids and I have been butchered so many times at various quicky places around town, I won't ever do it again. You end up spending twice as much paying someone else to fix it. I take Max to a barber and they charge 12$, My stylist charges me 25$ for Maddie, which is worth it since her hair is long, thick and curly. And I pay 50... But she's soooo worth it!!! And it's only about every 4 months....

Here's my nephew :)

Whoa, and giggle. Don't know why it made me giggle :P

Aw...thanks for the song Karen. Actually, this used to be one of my faves. Brings back VERY happy memories of sitting in a diner with my Auntie Ann, my mom and my sister drinking orange freezes. I ALWAYS picked this song on the little jukebox in our booth

Hmmm....we needs to build us an ark here- it has been raining all month. The major river that runs from Boston into the suburbs hasn't risen this high since 2 hurricanes back in the 1950's! Crazy!

I got nutting! Geoss- I LOVE that song. Cheesy 70's songs=gooooodddd. Bring on the Barry White!

You're old enough some people say

To read the signs and walk away.

It's only time that heals the pain

And makes the sun come out again... . . .......

Understood. And don't beat yourself up about this. Many are in the same boat as you, having experimented with the gluten-free diet before getting formerly tested. It is a logical, common sense approach when you don't have the knowledge about how testing works or you don't have the healthcare resources to afford testing. And some experience such severe reactions to gluten that it is impossible to get through the gluten challenge in order to get tested. So, they must live with the ambiguity of not knowing for sure if they suffer from celiac disease or NCGS. But at the end of the day, the antidote is the same for both. Namely, life-ling abstinence from gluten. Recently there was an article on posted on this forum about the develop of a new testing method for diagnosing celiac disease that do not require a gluten challenge. It is still in the developmental stage and probably years away from becoming main streams even if it pans out. But there is hope at least.

Here is more info about how to do a gluten challenge for a celiac disease blood panel, or for an endoscopy: and this recent study recommends 4-6 slices of wheat bread per day:
    • Scott Adams
Your experience is incredibly common and frustrating for many in the celiac and gluten-sensitive community, and it's especially challenging with the added layer of healthcare disparities for people of African descent. A negative endoscopy and blood panel, while the gold standard, are not infallible and can miss cases, particularly if you weren't consuming a significant amount of gluten leading up to the tests (the "gluten challenge"). Your dramatic improvement on a gluten-free diet is the most critical piece of evidence here—your body is giving you the answer the tests could not. The symptoms you're describing now, especially the dyshidrotic eczema and blister bumps, are huge red flags for a gluten-related disorder, and your GP dismissing the possibility of dermatitis herpetiformis without a biopsy is a significant oversight. Requesting a new dermatologist and specifically asking for a skin biopsy next to an active lesion (not on it) is the absolute best next step. In the meantime, documenting your symptoms with photos and a food/symptom diary will build a powerful case for yourself. While the financial burden of a gluten-free diet is very real, your health is the priority; perhaps focusing on naturally gluten-free whole foods like rice, beans, and vegetables, rather than expensive processed substitutes, could be a more sustainable path forward until you can get a definitive opinion.
