L-glutamine/stomach Pain & Gylcemic Index

Unwisely I tried 2 things at once.

I took L-glutamine with Florajen 3 probiotics, & I increased my fats to slow digestion to keep my bloodsugar from spiking. I think the fevers are related to bloodsugar and will get a meter to check.

No fevers yesterday! But stomach pain, not nausea. Like I did a couple hundred sit ups.

Trying to decide if I should ignore the pain and take the l-glutamine?

I am also looking for a good glycemic index? One that lists many fruits and veggies. The ones I found so far focus on grains and recommend low fat.

Personally, I wouldn't continue taking anything that caused me stomach pain. I would consider that a sign that the supplement doesn't agree with my body for whatever reason.

If you're looking for good blood sugar control, protein is the way to go. I'm hypoglycemic myself and have been dealing with it for about 20 years now. I've found that eating protein first thing in the morning sets the stage (in a good way) for the day. I also eat protein with every major meal. Protein takes longer for the body to break down, therefore you don't get the crazy blood sugar spikes & falls. Your metabolism will do a more even, controlled burn of the energy. Protein doesn't have to come from red meat, either. I know that many people have issues with red meat. Then I balance out my meals with vegetables, and oftentimes I'll do fruit for dessert. Potatoes are pretty high on the glycemic index and should be avoided if you're sensitive. Also, I like using Stevia rather than artificial sweeteners or sugar. It's natural, has little/no glycemic impact, and is something like 500 times sweeter than sugar. It's also important to eat frequently. I generally have 3 meals and 2 snacks a day, though it's really recommended that you have 3 snacks and 3 meals.

I've also found that since going gluten-free, my hypoglycemia has improved A LOT. I would have low blood sugar episodes as many as 3 or 4 times a day. Now I can't remember the last episode I've had - and I've only been gluten-free for about two weeks or so now. I bet as you get further along, you'll feel this way too.

Thanks for commenting.

I get this, I am from a diabetic family.

I don't eat "starch" from the old diabetic lists.

I am vegetarian, I have some trouble with dairy. I suspect soy/corn is also a problem too.

My problem is what protien, what fats. Where do they fall on the glycemic index.

Do you have a good table of things we eat. Many are loaded with info on grains and omit products with fat.

Today due to lack of input I guessed on the enzymes. I made sure my tummy was empty 2 hours before and after the l-glutamine/probiotic. When I did eat I ate sharp cheddar first and used plenty of marg. in preperation.

So far so good. No fevers no pain, but 30mg hydrocodone.

I take 30 mg daily, support in doing this is mixed. Without it I hurt all over, enough to cry, sob. So I take it.

Is this okay? No one seems to mention being prescribed narcotics to cope.

My doc. never commits to refill. I try now and then to see what it is like to reduce and eliminate hydro. I suffer so much I could become suicidal if I knew I had to endure the pain without help.

Does this touch a cord with anyone else?

Well, the high protein vegetable based foods just aren't going to help you out if you're allergic to them. Could you soften on the vegetarian stance a bit and eat fish and eggs? If you're not getting enough B vitamins that could certainly compound your problems.

I would recommend the books by Jennie Brand-Miller for the glycemic index. She has several great books including a list of the glycemic index of hundreds of foods - even gluten-free pasta. Can't help with the other issues other than to say trust your body and if you tried something new and got pain, stop it. If you tried two things and don't know which caused the pain I would stop them both and then add one at a time back and see what happens. Any good something is doing is not enough good to overcome whatever it is doing that is causing you pain.

Thanks, I will get the book.

I think that blood sugar is causing some of the problems. 2 days balancing protien& fat/ carbs

and no real fevers, slight temp changes only

I decided to take the l-glutamine on a very empty stomach. Nothing 2 hours before or after....it worked no pain

I even ate a real meal for dinner, I've only been able to graze the past few weeks.

Usually after having dinner, morning brings a painful tour to and from the bathroom, sometimes hours....today 1 trip and I'm fine.

I can hardly believe this is really working!

OMG.....r u still livng that kind of pain? sounds so much like what my dh lived with for 3 years. he coulnt find a dr that would prescribe narcotics....which is BS...they had no concept of the intense mind-blowing pain he lived in everyday.

We tried soooo many things. we thought miracle cures were just myth.

i sent you an email about IMS....that is what worked for him. back to work w no sick days for almost 3 months now!! we both just feel like kicking up our heels and jumping for joy cause he (and we) has (have) his (our) life (lives) back now!!!!!!!!!!

good luck to you and everyone living w debilitating chronic pain. if anyone wants more info on what worked for my dh see: www.istop.org

Hello,

Just wanted to share with you that I have been gluten-free for a year and I have had hypoglycemic issues. My endocrinologist says that it may be all the rice I am eating now. I eat rice noodles, rice cakes, puffed rice cereal (without malt of course). Just letting you know that rice will cause your sugar to drop suddenly and just as someone said before your entry, you need plenty of protein to balance it.

Glad you are feeling better though.

YOU BET!

Intense chronic pain was a serious battle for my dh before he started IMS treatments. if anyone reading this is living in near constant mind-blowing pain go to

Open Original Shared Link

and check out IMS treatments pioneered by dr chan gunn. spread the word!!!! barely anyone we talk to knows about it and neither do the doctors. This is great for severe fibromyalgia, CMP / MPS, and undiagnosed chronic pain syndromes.

IMS gave my husband back his life. he can now work, go to the gym, and play w our girls in the yard. we are living a dream now that he is pain free. this is a must try treatment if you are like he was and have tried everything else.

I know, this sounds like a commercial...but its our story and i am not selling anything!!

if anyone wants to know more about our experiences please feel free to email me anytime: celena12@shaw.ca

No, I've not been diagnosed as celiac.  Despite Entero Labs being relocated to Switzerland/Greece, I'll be doing another test. After eating wheat products in Greece for 4 weeks, there wasn't any reaction.  However, avoiding it here in the states.   Thanks everyone for your responses.

Thank you @JulieRe so much for sharing this extra information. I'm so glad to hear you're feeling better and I hope it keeps moving in that direction. I feel I'm having so many lightbulb moments on this forum just interacting with others who have this condition. I also was diagnosed with gastric reflux maybe about 10 years ago. I was prescribed ranitidine for it several years back, which was working to reduce my gastric reflux symptoms but then the FDA took ranitidine off the shelves so I stopped taking it. I had a lot of ups and downs healthwise in and around that time (I suddenly gained 20 pounds, blood pressure went up, depression got worse, and I was diagnosed with OSA). At the time I attributed my change in symptoms to me taking on a new stressful job and didn't think much else about it. They did give me a replacement gastric reflux drug since ranitidine was off the shelves, but when I went on the CPAP for my OSA, the CPAP seemed to correct the gastric reflux problem so I haven't been on any gastric reflux drug treatment for years although I still do have to use a CPAP for my OSA. Anyway that's a long story but just to say… I always feel like I've had a sensitive stomach and had migraines my whole life (which I'm now attributing to having celiac and not knowing it) but I feel my health took a turn for much worse around 2019-2020 (and this decline started before I caught covid for the first time). So I am now wondering based on what you said, if that ranitidine i took could have contributed to the yeast overgrowth, and that the problem has just been worsening ever since. I have distinctly felt that I am dealing with something more than just stress and battling a more fundamental disease process here. I've basically been in and out of different doctor specialties for the past 5 years trying to figure out what's wrong with me. Finally being diagnosed with celiac one year ago, I thought I finally had THE answer but now as I'm still sick, I think it's one of a few answers and that maybe yeast overgrowth is another answer. For me as well, my vitamin deficiencies have persisted even after I went gluten-free (and my TTG antibody levels came down to measurably below the detectable limit on my last blood test). So this issue of not absorbing vitamins well is also something our cases have in common. I'm now working with a nutritionist and taking lots of vitamins and supplements to try and remedy that issue. I hope that you continue to see improvements in working with your naturopath on this. Keep us posted!

Hello everyone. I am Elena and am 38 years old. I suspect I have a gluten intolerance even if my celiac panel is ok. I have the following symptoms : facial flushing, Red dots not bumps în face, bloating abdominal distension, hair loss, depression anxiety even with meds and even bipolar. Fatigue extreme to the point of not being able to work. All of these after I eat gluten. Could I have non celiac gluten sensitivity? Thanks anyone else with these symptoms?

Hi Everyone,  I do appreciate your replies to my original post.   Here is where I am now in this journey.  I am currently seeing a Naturopath.  One thing I did not post before is that I take Esomeprazole for GERD.  My Naturopath believes that the decrease in the gastric acid has allowed the yeast to grow.    She has put me on some digestive enzymes.  She also put me on Zinc, Selenium, B 12, as she felt that I was not absorbing my vitamins. I am about 5 weeks into this treatment, and I am feeling better. I did not have any trouble taking the Fluconazole.
