Gastritis Part Of The Fun Celiac Package...

So I had my upper GI endoscopy on Tuesday. The doc said my duodenum looked healthy, my bile duct was sound, esophagus just fine, but I had inflammation in the stomach.

He's still worried about the D, so we're doing a colonoscopy on Monday. But he seemed like he thought many of my symptoms could be explained by this.

I was just wondering, did anyone show gastritis? Is this common with celiac, or should I keep looking for a non-gluten cause (knowing of course that gluten is exacerbating if there is an outside cause....)

I've tested negative for all the usual suspects, parasite-wise, including H. pylori, though the doc took a biopsy and will test it again.

Me.

My last endo in August showed several ulcers in the stomach. He put me on Losec. The h-pylori came back negative.

I can't really tell you if the Losec is helping or not, because quite frankly, I didn't have a clue I had ulcers in the first place! My abdominal pain and troubles are diarrhea related and cramping etc., not really anything like heartburn or GERD or reflux or anything like that......

Weird, I know.......

Hugs.

This is a great site on gastritis:

There is a form of autoimmune gastritis. In that sense - it is not caused by celiac and the only relation is that both conditions are immune mediated and if you have one autoimmune condition, you are more likely to have another.

For years I'd get gastritis at the drop of a hat. Seemed something was always setting it off and then it would take 3 weeks to 3 months to heal up. I still had problems for a while with heartburn after going gluten-free, but about 2 months into the diet the problem eased up and for the last few weeks I've not had any problem with it. So, was my gastritis problem brought on by gluten? - I'm sure of it. (I don't go to doctors so didn't have any tests to officially diagnose anything.)

He put me on aciphex. I think it's similar.

I guess, I have had really awful heartburn. But it only appeared a couple of months ago; the D and malabsorption have been going on well over a year. So I would suspect that the gastritis is a response to other trouble. There are a lot of causes of gastritis, though, so goodness only knows what it means...

I just don't think it could be *causing* all my symptoms. I hope the colonoscopy is informative, b/c I don't want the docs to send me home with a "Well, sometimes a little bit of clinical damage can cause a lot of pain and discomfort, so just keep taking your aciphex and you'll be juuuuuuuuuust fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine."

My son (2) and I both have gastritis and we both have food allergies. I don't know if the two are related though. He had a biopsy and so did I, and now he takes prilosec 2 times a day, and I take nexium.

Yikes. I don't know if it's related, either; what I've read on gastritis says it passes on it's own, but like I said, I think it's a symptom of other inflammation going on...

I went to the health food store and they said aloe was the best thing to take. You drink it - don't get the plain - they have cherry flavored or mango flavored, and it really helped. I also take digestive enzymes and probiotics.

For heartburn I take vinegar capsules. I was on aciphex twice a day and still had very bad heartburn. That was before I was gluten-free and I have now realized that I get heartburn for about 3 weeks after being glutened. I read something and decided to try drinking vinegar when I had heartburn - it went away in 10 minutes. From what I read that meant that I had too little stomach acid. So, now I take vinegar capsules (they taste much better) and it works very well for any heartburn that I get.

Also, I know you said that you tested negative for parasites. I got parasites by taking all those antacids. They make your stomach less acidic (obviously, since it is their job) and parasites that are normally killed by the acid barrier can get through. I had an amoeba (common in Florida) and some nasty bacteria. I had to take several antibiotics that I thought were going to kill me. So, I would go easy on the aciphex if I was you. I will never take that stuff again and doctors hand it out like it is no big deal.

Hope you feel better.

I did the same - although I like the taste of vinegar so I stuck with just drinking some with my meals (a tsp. diluted in water with Stevia to cut the sharpness). Worked like a charm. Although, like I said before, being gluten-free (and corn-free 'cause I'm intolerant to corn) has cleared up all my stomach problems.

Hey there,

I've worried about the parasite thing, because my symptoms started after travelling in Africa for three months. Back then I wasn't taking any stomach stuff, although I did go through a round of ciprofloxacine, a round of flagyl, and a round of mebendazole, in addition to malarone, and also three days of quinine and doxycycline when they thought I had malaria, but I didn't. I imagine all of those antibiotics could have really messed things up.

The antacids I just started taking with some frequency in the last two months. So I don't really think I've picked up a parasite from taking them, but I worry about that now because I travel so much.

I started taking the digestive enzymes last week, and they help alot. I'm also going to try the aloe. It sounds like it would be soothing :)

If you took all those antibiotics you probably killed most of the good bacteria as well. I would highly recommend taking a strong probiotic for a month or so. I got the best one my doctor had after my antibiotics. Now I drink kefir everyday because good bacteria are so important.

Glad the digestive enzymes are helping.

Yeah, I've taken the high-end, enteric-coated, three-species, totally refrigerated probiotics for a year. Also drink a pint of kefir a day....hasn't helped, so I suspect something more...

When I have had what I think are episodes of this (I've never had a formal diagnosis for PF) it seems to be triggered by bloating caused by something I've eaten - a friend had an episode of this after eating too many apples, for me corn and rice cakes seemed to give me IBS and trigger this.  I am not a medical person but it seemed like the extra pressure down there perhaps added pressure to already sensitised pelvic and rectal muscles. Coeliacs can suffer from bloating when they are first diagnosed due to the inability to digest food properly.  Lactose for me caused a lot of bloating and when I came off it temporarily after diagnosis it helped reduce bloating.  Iron supplements and the timing of taking them also caused discomfort and I had to experiment a bit with type and timing before my gut felt comfortable.   Maybe something to think about?   Some coeliacs suffer from constipation - again, just a thought, but perhaps if you had issues with that it might be a contributor.

At a family wedding in Italy last year I was drinking gluten free Peroni which was fine for me. From the Daura Damn website ... " Our guarantee less than 3ppm: each batch is analyzed and certified by the CSIC using the R5 Competitive ELISA test before hitting the market. This way, we ensure that its gluten content is always below 3ppm "

Hi jmartes, I brought up doTerra's website and see that they do have many supplements, offer  support and help. And using their organic products has been helpful. and yet you are not able to work enough to support yourself when, if you were healtht, you could work for another 20 years. It does not seem that they offer a program to follow and instead are offering supplements for your symptoms. This has helped you but you are not able to work very much.  The Programs I have seen  online usually have 3 parts. The first is a Parasite cleanse. The 2nd is the Kidney cleanse and the  3rd is a Liver cleanse and gallbladder cleanse. You need to doall these cleanses to have your whole body functioning well. I can only reccommend the program I gave you because that is the one I used and still do. (drclark.net)  When I see a newprovider and tell I have Celiacs and they look skeptical I tell them that when I am gluttoned the reaction happens 8 or more hours later with intestinal painful cramping followed by diarrhea. Providers are willing to accept tha I probably have Celiacs and are more likely order tests such as vitamin levels. Is this what happens if you eat only a small amount of Gluten? You mentioned going to Mayors. 20 years ago many Dr.s wanted to include a celiac screening as a standard test so that more people eould diagnosed and not become disabled. It did not happen but the Federal levgislature did pass a law so that Celiacs could claim deductions for the gluten free food they bought. What were you going to ask the Mayors to do?

Thank you for all the excellent information. I moved from Wyoming to California. May be its where I am located but So far none of the Costco Kirkland brand I have looked at is labeled gluten free. Same with the Sam's Members Mark. The Kirkland nuts you mention all say they are processed in a plant that processes wheat.  I am going to keep checking. Thank you. The Azure Market looks promising 😁 Take care S
