Dos Caminos

So i have a work lunch this week at the new branch of Dos Caminos (NYC chain restaurant). I plan to stop by and talk to them about whether i can eat anything there but was wondering if anyone here has successfully eaten at one and has any good advice. I tend to stay away from Mexican restaurants because i find it difficult to order there, so any advice would be greatly appreciated! (either about the specific restaurant or mexican in general)

Thanks!

Hey honey!! I haven't eaten there, but I've heard they are very accomodating and know of other gluten free people that have had success at the one on Park.

I was looking at the menu for the new one the other day, and the enchiladas looked like they had potential.

Let me know how it goes.

It's funny you mention Dos Caminos! I am going with friends next friday! I had the same concern. Did you go? How was it?

Well, we ended up postponing until December 1 b/c everyone was so crazy this week, so that gives me a little more time. I havent had a chance yet to ask them about the menu but i work in the building so i really have no excuse! I will try to stop by this week and ask about the menu-- are you going this fri, as in the day after thanksgiving? I will try to get some info for you before then

Jillian, i was thinking the enchiladas had potential, but i always worry about mexican... i'm glad you have heard good things though. i'll let you guys know what they say!

I am going this Friday (the fri after thanksgiving) :) Whatever you can find out would be great! I am going with five non-gluten-free people so we are going regardless. I am also going to Rosa Mexicano on Dec 12th. I have never been so I am hoping there are things I can eat. I am going with 9 other people from work. The girl who invited me after the fact said "well there probably really isn't anything you can eat there but we are still going" and then gave me the option of backing out but made it seem like I would be the world's biggest kill-joy if I did. You would think people would be a little more understanding.

Oh I went to Rosa Mexicano!! I actually went as part of my bachleorette party. I was pretty newly diagnosed at that time and so it was little tough (one of my bridesmaids was really pissing me off because she kept bothering me about where I wanted to go, and at that time I'd only been diagnosed for a couple months. I kept telling her I didn't want to eat out, but she kept insisting. I figured that would be a fun place and I could find stuff). I don't remember what I got but fortunately one of my other friends that was with us has another friend that is celiac and she helped me. The food was really great and I had no problems.

I did go to Dos Caminos. The food was great. I had seafood ceviche and tuna crusted with avocado and iced cream for dessert. The waitress was extremely understanding and friendly and I had no problem at all. Sorry for the late reply, I was away this weekend and had jury duty all day. :(

Sorry i have been so mia - i've been insanely busy but we FINALLY went to dos caminos today - the food was great and the waiter was super helpful. All i had to say was the word gluten and she knew immediately what i needed to avoid and what i could eat. The food was great! Service was SLOOOOOOOOOW but otherwise it was a great experience!!

I went to Dos Caminos today (the one on 3rd Ave.) for my goodbye lunch today at work.

It was very good and the staff was really, really knowlegable about gluten. When we sat down, I told the waitress I was allergic to anything with wheat or flour and she said, "oh is it a gluten allergy?" I said yes and she told me what on the menu I could have and told me but if there was something else that I wanted they could probably modify it.

I had lobster tacos on corn tortillas. They were delicous!

Thats great!! I can't wait to go!! (Hopefully soon)

thanks,

Kristen

Ok, so I will be going there tomorrow. Just a few additional questions...are the chips/salsa OK to eat?? Also, what did u drink there? are the margaritas OK?

Thanks and I'll report back on my experience..

I didn't eat the chips because they looked like they had definately been thrown in the fryer. I was going to ask but didn't bother.

I actually just had iced tea because I was there for a goodbye work lunch, so it wasn't really appropriate. (Ok that and we were having margaritas in the office at 4:00 for someone's birthday - lol)!

I noticed eating gluten-free or CGF foods have higher sugar and sodium some. No added sugar protein bars I found better with plant fiber. I wanted to know what are you go to besides whole fruits/veggies that you find are healthy for you where you can feel eating normal without hurting yourself or health. I was looking into subscription based like Thrift to see if there is something that is healthier CGF that can make me feel normal. Thanks

Thankyou because I met up with K B with well known bay area hospital once and she said she knows I don't like to take meds, I said thats incorrect, I have issues.Thats the one that said I was deemed " unruly " when she admitted I was celiac when I asked why am I going through this.

Cristiana, that sounds like a great approach and I will be looking forward to the results. I am in the same boat as you. I don't experience overt symptoms with minor, cross contamination level exposures so I sometimes will indulge in those "processed on equipment that also processes wheat . . ." or items that don't specifically claim to be gluten free but do not list gluten containing grains in their ingredient list. But I always wonder if I am still experiencing sub acute inflammatory reactions. I haven't had any celiac antibody blood work done since my diagnosis almost 25 years ago so I don't really have any data to go by.
