So, my 21st birthday is ON thanksgiving this year, and i boycotted this yr, and said were going to celebrate...of course i decided this when i was able to eat anything....soooo, does or has anybody been there and know of a good place to eat, here is a listing of the resturants they have....

i would call those from the list in advance, and see who is familiar, or look at the menus online and then see what ones you are fond of and speak with them.

My daughter has eaten at Johnny Rockets a few times. They have a gluten free menu online. She's had the fries and grilled chicken with no problems. Just call & double check that they have a dedicated fryer at that location.

I was at Mohegan Sun this past Friday. I was unable to eat anything at the BBQ resturant - all sauces have soy, and do list wheat as an ingredient. I was able to have grilled fish at "Summer Shack". I asked the waitress about gluten in the Chowder. She didn't go check, because she was "sure" it contained gluten. (I think she was just too lazy to go ask.)

PA is finally allowing casinos....we are so behind. Mohegan Sun Casino in PA opened up last spring/summer I cannot even remember. But a month ago, Hollywood Casino at Penn National Raceway opened and that is 10 minutes from where we live. We were there today....I think Atlantic City is more fun.

No knowledge of Mohegan Sun restaurants - try calling the concierge at their top on-site hotel & ask them?? Or the "Eggs up Grill" the gluten-free restaurant in Portland CT, that's not so super far away, might have insight. Good luck and happy celebrating! Or Aleia's in Old Saybrook CT, same concept - close enough that they might know something.

But while we're on CT - had dinner recently at Ibiza in New Haven - called ahead to 'warn' them as I was part of a large group having a set (nothing to do w/gluten-free) menu. In my experience this can be tricky, but everything was wonderful! They substituted or adjusted everything, I only had to mention I was the gluten-free diner once, and when someone else at our table realized during course 3 that course 4 had shrimp in it, they brought him a shrimp-free version pronto. The substitutions were even thoughtful, for example course 1 was four small bites, one was a blue cheese croquette (covered in breadcrumbs) - their gluten-free substitute was a baby fresh mozarella on a skewer with a grape tomato. When I thanked Juan Carlos (the maitre d' --is that how it's spelled??) afterwards, he graciously thanked me and said as long as they have notice they are happy to accommodate.

Any other CT experiences to share? Hopefully the GFRAP list will grow, until then word of mouth (so to speak hee hee) is very helpful :)

I haven't made it down to Aleia's yet...but they sell their cookies at whole foods, and those things are AMAZING!!

Other CT restaurants I like:

-Manchester's Texas Roadhouse has a celiac manager, so although they don't have a gluten-free menu they'll hook you up :)

-Green Tea in Avon- Chinese Restaurant, and WOW are they helpful. I have talked to the same guy twice when I've ordered there (I think he might be a manager or owner or something) and he understands allergies really well. He made me special fried rice w/o soy sauce, and he even put my food in a separate bag, even though I didn't ask. And he knew not to put in fortune cookies!

-Chili's in Avon- their waitstaff is really well trained, I told the waitress I couldn't have wheat, and before I even had a chance to ask for the gluten-free menu, she said, "All gluten or just wheat?"

Hi there! I live in CT too. I just moved to CT a year ago and would love any tips on good restaurants that offer gluten-free menus in the Hartford area. Suprisingly, I have not found the restaurants in New Haven to be very accomodating.

Suprisingly, I have not found the restaurants in New Haven to be very accomodating.

Two downtown New Haven ideas:

Foster's (no gluten-free menu, but chef very accommodating, will come out & help you order, although he didn't know if the miso was actually all-soy or not so I avoided that, has a few gluten-free desserts, and can do gluten-free birthday cake if you call ahead)

Ibiza (ate there as part of a group, they were very aware, also dealt with another diner's seafood allergy well).

In both cases I'd make a reservation (phone or opentable) and note you're gluten-free. And re-announce that when seated & to your server.

One more idea, not as pricey - Uncle Willie's (barbecue) is now in New Haven on N Whalley Ave (up toward the Merritt), but not as good as they used to be imho - however, their ribs & brisket & pulled pork are all gluten-free, as is the vinegar-based dipping sauce (not sure about the other sauces). beans & rice is gluten-free as a side dish. It's still pretty good bbq (and fast) - I prefer Wilson's in Fairfield at the moment (ribs, brisket, pork all gluten-free; sausage is not).

Hey, all weekend away from computer and I forgot to post-

The arepas at Valencia in Norwalk (Main Ave) ARE gluten-free

and very tasty

these are Venzuelan corn cakes, fried, split and filled with your choice of items (breakfast or lunch)

Valencia is a tiny restaurant - really a lunch counter but no counter if that makes sense, just a few tables

Yummy food, kid friendly, perfect for breakfast or lunch (also open for dinner, although I've never been)

I'm very happy that Valencia can stay a part of my breakfast options now that I'm gluten-free

      oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
