Someone Reported Me For Using Toaster Bags

I was at a small hotel in Gainesville FL last week on the way to Orlando for work. DH was with me and the hotel serves breakfast in the back lobby. The only thing I could have was a boiled egg and fruit as everthing else was bread related. So I had my own bread in a cooler in the room and I took it and my new toaster bags down and then put the bread into the toaster bag and put it in the toaster. There are 2 toasters next to each other and one was already in use by someone standing next to it. I scoured the offerings on the bar and then saw that the toaster light wasn't on so I went right back and commented that it would probably work better if I turned the toaster on and I laughed and for sure, without question the woman standing two feet from me heard me and ever acknowleged me. So I head out to get my coffee on the other side of the space and when I turn around I see the woman from the toaster area telling the woman who worked there that someone put plastic into the toaster. I ran over quickly to explain what the bag is and the lady that works at the hotel is very nice and asked me about what I couldn't eat and I could tell the narc woman was very dissappointed that the hotel lady didn't scold me or something. It was so odd. The narc woman then proceeded to say that she thought some kids had put the bag in the toaster.......ummmmmmm...no she didn't since she saw me do it so she is now not only a narc but a liar as well. I could see if she thought I was literally retarded and thought I was going to ruin the toaster but when she then backtracked and said she thought kids did it when clearly she did not think that, I felt I could slap her but then the police would have been called...it would not have been pretty and we would possibly miss our dinner reservations in Orlando for that evening......lol! Dh would have been mortified if I'd told the narc off so I let it go and later as she passed by our table and looked at me and I gave her the nastiest look ever. It felt good too.

Why bother posting this? If you are out in such a venue using toaster bags, you might want to stick by the toaster so the same thing doesn't happen to you. People can be so nosy. I might add that the toaster bags are totally worth the $8 investment. They work great and my toast was perfect, browned to my liking and the bag is reusable, though not indefinitely.

Where do you get those toaster bags? They would be great for family use.

Why bother posting this? If you are out in such a venue using toaster bags, you might want to stick by the toaster so the same thing doesn't happen to you. People can be so nosy. I might add that the toaster bags are totally worth the $8 investment. They work great and my toast was perfect, browned to my liking and the bag is reusable, though not indefinitely.

Toaster bags are great. My black ones are said to be usable for 300 times, and the gold ones up to 100.

There was a fund raising option put to our primary school at the end of last year, to sell toaster bags and earn money at the same time, and as I had heard about them, I was keen. As the postal address was just round the corner I put in a personal order. It then happens that the seller, was in partnership with the original English inventor of the toaster bag, and just lives a mile up the road. I think they both live in NZ. Sounds unreal.

They are now available in supermarkets over here, maybe they are over there in America.

That is such B.S.! It amazes me sometimes how people are so nosy. It's one thing if she saw smoke coming out of the toaster, but to go "tattletale" on you over something she simply didn't understand is ridiculous. For what it's worth, the same thing has happened to me at work, in the community break room. I have my toaster bag in the toaster and someone has to walk in and make some comment about it. It's to the point where I try to wait until the room is clear before I will go in and make my breakfast. I know they mean no harm, and they are just curious, but it's really annoying. I guess if I didn't know anything about Celiac disease or other food allergies and I saw someone stick what looked like a plastic bag in the toaster, I would make a mental note of it and then go Google it privately.

Your toaster bag story was so cute! Thanks for sharing...I did not know about toaster bags. They sound great! I've got to get some.

mb1984- I think I got my bags from the Connis Sarros (sp?) site. Google her and toaster bags and it will come up. There are lots of places that sell them so you may want to shop around for the best deal. There were only two bags in my pack which is fine when using on for travel but they won't last long for everyday use.

kimjoy24 - that would really get annoying if someone were doing that all the time at work. I guess humans are curious by nature but some should remember 'curiosity killed the cat'.

Yes, just my opinion. I don't mind people being curious about something, they haven't seen yet. But, for heavens sake, can't they ask me in a manner, that is nice and friendly? Not with that sarcastic undertone in their voice. Or ridiculing me. Ooooh! I hate that. Get ready for the battle then, cause I just stuck my claws out. :blink:

I mean, If I saw somebody doing that somewhere, my question would be something like that: "Ahm, excuse me, I don't want to bother you, but I'm kind of curious. I never saw THIS (pointing on it) before. Could you explain to me, what it is?" How about this being a non-offending, nice question??? People are just stupid sometimes :o

A celiac buddy of mine has raved about these toaster bags, I havent bought them yet, since we don't travel and I never ate toast before. When I want sandwichs at home I just toast in the oven.

I also heard about those toaster bags before. I never found them anywhere though and I'm not buying on eBay anymore. I have my own toaster at home, but my mother in law still puts my bread in the oven. I personally don't like it, because I like my toast a little burnt at the edges. And they never get that way in the oven. I know, I'm weird :P

I have never heard to toaster bags, good to know that they exist.

It is crazy being out in public how many strange people you meet. I'm sure if that woman asked you what you were doing (in a nice way) that you would have told her. Good thing there seems to be more nice people than nasty ones.

I agree with Cassidy, it's good that there are a lot more nicer people than cranky ones. What a way to go through life :rolleyes:

I buy my toaster bags at Boscov's. They are the gold 100 use bags for $7.99, 2 in a pkg. I have never seen the 300 use one.. But I see many places sell the 10 use bags for about the same price as I pay for the 100 use bags. I love these bags.....

And people should mind their own business. Maybe they thought you were trying to blow-up the toaster!!!! I probably would have told the person I had some uncurable disease & I didn't want to infect anyone! That would have them running.....

I hope you continue to use your bags.

      Welcome, @JudyLou, Your rash sounds very similar to the one I experienced. Mine was due to a deficiency in Niacin B3, although I had deficiencies in other nutrients as well. Celiac disease causes malabsorption of all the essential nutrients, but eating a poor diet, taking certain medications, or drinking alcohol can result in deficiency diseases outside...

      I saw the thing for testing for gluten when at public places.I absolutely love but I wonder if they would come up with a bracelet or necklace that can detect gluten in the air.I would LOVE that, i know i get debilitating migraine from smelling gluten wheat what have you, all I know is when I go into places like Chevron- gluten Subway, migraine, Costco that...

      @Mark Conway, here is an article outlining the various tests that can be used to diagnose celiac disease. By far, the most popular one ordered by physicians is the tTG-IGA. But almost all of these tests are known by different names so the terminology will vary from place to place and lab to lab. The article gives common variant names for each test.  In addition to IGA tests there are IGG tests which are particularly useful in the case of IGA deficiency.

      Thank you so much @knitty kitty! My feet aren’t dry or ashy and I don’t have a rash that gets scaly. It’s like very itchy/burning vesicles that are symmetrical - on both arms, both legs, etc. They actually feel better in direct sunlight as long as it isn’t really hot or I’m not exercising outside, but gets worse if I sweat (especially if the area is covered up). It’s not usually on the outside of my elbows and knees which seems more typical of dermatitis herpetiformis (unless it spreads there). It tends to first hit the inside of those areas. Interestingly, twice the rash broke out soon after eating an unhealthy meal and having an alcoholic drink (I only drink a few times a year, no more alcohol content than a glass of wine).  So I wonder if there is a connection. I’m halfway considering doing a gluten challenge for a few months to see what happens, knowing I can stop if I have any symptoms, and asking for a full celiac disease panel at the end. I really appreciate your thoughts!

      Welcome, @JudyLou, Your rash sounds very similar to the one I experienced.  Mine was due to a deficiency in Niacin B3, although I had deficiencies in other nutrients as well.  Celiac disease causes malabsorption of all the essential nutrients, but eating a poor diet, taking certain medications, or drinking alcohol can result in deficiency diseases outside of Celiac, too.  Symptoms can wax and wane depending on dietary intake.  I knew an alcoholic who had the "boots" of Pellagra, which would get worse when he was drinking more heavily, and improve when he was drinking less.   Niacin deficiency is called Pellagra.  Symptoms consist of dermatitis, diarrhea, dementia, and death (the four D's).  A scaly rash on the feet and hands and arms are called the "boots" and "gloves" of Pellagra.  Darkened skin around the neck exposed to the sun is Casal's necklace.  Poor farmers with niacin deficient diets were called "red necks" because of this.    Does your rash get worse if you're in the sun?  Mine did.  Any skin exposed to the sun got blistered and scaly.  Arms, legs, neck, head.  Do you have dry, ashy skin on your feet?  The itchiness was not only from the rash, but neuropathy.   My doctors were clueless.  They didn't put all my symptoms together into the three D's.  But I did.  I'd learned about Pellagra at university.  But there weren't supposed to be deficiency diseases anymore in the developed world.  Doubtful it could be that simple, I started supplementing with Niacin and other essential nutrients.  I got better.   One of Niacinamide functions is to help stop mast cells from releasing histamine.  Your allergist gave you doxepin, an antihistamine which stops mast cells from releasing histamine.   Since you do have a Celiac gene, staying on the gluten free diet can prevent Celiac disease from being triggered again.   Interesting Reading: These case studies have pictures... I am and wish I wasn't. If there was a detector of gluten in the air it would make a world of difference.
