Triumph Dining

Hi guys-

I'm trying to decide if the Triump Dining Restaurant guide is worth buying. I was going to get it and then I started to read the FAQ's about it and read that they don't verify the information that they publish. It's all word-of-mouth.

At the very least, should I buy the dining cards?

I'm getting ready to go on a cruise in a few weeks and I'm newly diagnosed, so I want to be armed with as much knowledge as possible. At this point, I have no clue what to tell a waiter/waitress/chef. Other than the basics (wheat, rye, barley), I'm not sure what else to tell them about what I can/cannot eat and how to prepare my food. There are so many resources out there, I don't want to waste my money.

Someone let me borrow the Gluten-Free Bible -- I was going to buy that for myself and after reading reviews from other Celiacs, have changed my mind. Our diet is costly enough (at times), so I don't want to break the bank paying for resources that aren't helpful. Make sense?

Any guidance you can provide would be much appreciated.

As always, thanks for being here guys!!

Kelli

I have both the Restaurant Guide and the Dining Cards. I would recommend both. The cards come in five languages and wonderful in Chinese and Mexican Restaurants. It eliminates much of the language confusion.

When I travel, I know what Dining options I have that either have a gluten free menu or celiac friendly.

I love the Triumph cards and have used them many times in my travels and locally in ethnic restaurants. You should definitely buy them, it makes it so much easier. I originally had bought the six pack when I was diagnosed but recently ordered the ten pack which covers more languages.

I bought the 10 pack recently and went to try a new Indian restaurant today and used the card for the first time. The dining room manager started to read it in English and looked concerned and when I pointed out that it was in Hindi on the other side, he looked impressed and took it back to show the chef. When he came back he showed me everything that I could not eat on the buffet(there were plenty that I could) and offered to have the chef make a special dish of chicken curry, without the wheat, for me at no extra charge.

There is also some interesting info. with the cards showing different status for the same ingredients in different cuisines because of the difference in the way they are made in other countries.

I think they are worth it, especially for cuisines other than typical American.

Thank you for all the feedback guys!

Does the book provide information other than names of restaurants? I was just reading that the info is only good as of November 2005, so it's rather outdated. If it's a good guide to ordering from restaurants, it may be helpful to me. But, if it just provides names of restaurants and lists of foods from those restaurants, I may pass.

Thanks again!!

The new 07-08 Guide is out and current.

It also lists some menu choices from many of the restaurants listed.

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
