Hi Everyone

I was diagnosed as a Celiac a few days ago and have been on a gluten free diet for the last few days. Yesterday I spent the day home from work because I had a lot of queasyness and extremely bad diarhea. Is that normal when ajusting to the gluten free diet?

I haven't got a lot of variety in my diet as yet as I have yet to go out and buy special glutin free foods. I have mostly been sticking to fruit and veges and meat although we have picked up a few glutin free biscuits and things.

We are going to buy a breadmaker soon so that we can make our own bread. I was going to try and get glutin free bread from the bakery but figured there would be too much risk of cross contamination there and the glutin free bread in the supermarket is very expensive.

I am in Australia by the way. My doctor tells me I don't have 'all of it'.. I am guessing she means since I am overweight (I have no idea, should probably go for a follow up visit)... would be nice if the diet helps me loose it!

I was diagnosed by a colonoscopy to investigate anemia. I have had blood tests before which all came up negative. I have been starting to feel a bit more energetic since starting the diet, I hope that continues to improve.. would be nice to feel like I can do stuff again!

Anyway, I had better go to work, I have no doubt I will have more questions tho...

Hello clikchic, welcome to the board! You may be still getting traces of gluten from your make-up, or tiny amounts of cross contamination from old pots, pans etc. It's really hard at first to get completely gluten free.

Also, it does take some time for the body to start healing. So you will have some up and down moments.

Ask a lot of questions here, there are lots of people on the board that can help answer them.

Welcome to the board. I am glad that you have found us.

I am curious about some of the things that you doctor told you though. A diagnosis for Celiac is done in the small intestines with a test called endoscopy and biopsies are take to confirm Celiac. It is not diagnosed with a colonoscopy.

You doctor said that you "don't have all of it"? Celiac is a defined illness. You either have it or you don't. It's sort of like being a little bit pregnant. Blood test can often be misleading depending on the amount of gluten you were consuming. A possitive blood test can rule in Celiac, but a negative result is not conclusive. I believe that 20% to 30% of celiacs are overweight.

Please do not interpret this post as being negative. But, I am not sure that what you doctor told you was correct.

The bottom line is the most important one. If you feel better being gluten free, that is how you should proceed.

Again, welcome. There are some marvelous people here with a vast amount of information.

Hi and welcome to the boards. If your wondering why you have diarrhea after you went gluten free for just a few days it might be just to early to expect anything yet. There is probably gluten still in your system. Also your changing your diet and adding more fruit and veggies. It maybe your body adjusting to the fiber. Also fruit tends to make loose bowels. If it doesn't get any better post back and list what you've been eating for the last day or so and we can get a better understanding of what it is that's causing the problems. We do it all the time on here. :P

Sorry, I probably didn't explain everything properly as I was running late for work and rushing a bit!

I had a gastroscopy and colonoscopy at the same time and a biopsy was taken during the proceedures. I have had blood tests before which came up negative but the biopsy came up positive.

I think my doctor meant I don't have a severe case of it, but I was diagnosed as lactose intolerant at the same time so it is possible I have gotten some of what she said confused.

I had the diarrhea for several hours yesterday afternoon... very noisy tummy and having to go to the toilet every 30mins or so. After say 4 or 5hrs the diarrhea stopped and I haven't had any since yesterday evening. (It is now nearly 3pm here) Since we haven't had much gluten free food in the house yet (did some shopping in my lunch break) I have mostly been eating fruit, salad, hard cheese and steak, along with a couple of gluten free biscuits. I figured it might be my body adjusting to the new diet. Either that, or perhaps a reaction to the fetta cheese (oops!) I had in my salad yesterday for lunch. I have my doubts it is that because I have been living with lactose intolerance for this long without too much drama.

Up until I started the diet, I did get occasional bouts of diarrhea but it was usually just here and there, not all the time or anything like that. I just put it down to the fact that I have PCOS and that it was a side effect of Meformin which I take for PCOS.

I haven't had many carbs since starting the diet so perhaps it was just lack of carbs?

I should clarify, my doctor did not mention anything in regards to my weight and my diagnosis. That was just speculation on my part.

One of the very first symptoms that went away for me was the next morning I didnt have pain running up and down my legs. Rather a weird one isn't it. Then of course other good things followed later alittle at a time.

One of the most talked about 1st symptom of an accidental glutening is a rumbling in your stomach (mine can be quite loud).

Then I'll get a foggy brain. People will be talking to me and I have a hard time understanding what they are saying to me.

Then I don't communicate well. Its like all my brains spilled out of my head. I'll have feeling of self hatred for no good reason.

The symptoms that follow are crabby as all get out and I don't want to leave the house because I'll get panicky and almost agoraphobic. I get constipated rather then D. I think my intestines just stop working. Anyway those are my symptoms but everyone is different.

My gastro doctor gave me the outlines of the diet, but i have my first appointment with a nutritionist next week.

my major symptom last Fall before i was diagnosed was severe nausea. My blood test was 106, and the doc said normal was 19 or under, then he confirmed with an endoscopy.

Overall, I feel good about 5 days a week now, but some gluten must be sneaking into my diet. I have someone who bakes me gluten-free bread, which I toast; do you REALLY have to have a separate toaster or toaster slot?

Last night i went out to a restaurant. I had: baked potato with sour cream, no problem, right? salad with no croutons, vinegar and oil, ok? zucchini in tomato sauce, ok, right? glass of merlot--ok; but my entree was a piece of broiled tuna steak. The tuna did not obviously have anything on it, but could it have received cross contamination from something else broiled on the same broiler?

Hi and Welcome, A couple quick answers for you. Yes you do need your own new toaster, just a slot won't do.

There is always a risk of CC at a restaurant but your best bet is to ask the server to check about ingredients with the chef. You have to ask for your meat to be cooked in a seperate clean pan and be real careful with any seasoning. Some places are easier than others and some places have a gluten free menu.

thanks ravenwoodglass, I was afraid of that (separate toaster, having to ask server/cook to cook meat or fish in separate pan, etc.) pain in the gluten-eus maximus!

its dif for everyone not everyone gets the same sytomas as the other now like me, i been getting stomach pains after i eat, and you do get DX from a bispoy i just had a few done to be truthful and all the showed was my celiac disease, which ive had for years but i guess my insides havent been healing.

Hello from another Newbie! You and I were diagnosed on the same day! One of the most interesting bits of info from my doctor was that Gluten can affect your body for up to two weeks! My doctor told me that even though I had been trying to be Gluten Free 2 days prior to my appointment with Biopsy results, not to be discouraged if I was still symptomatic (I was/am). After 6 Gluten Free days I am feeling very energized and encouraged! Good Luck to you and let us know how you are doing!

      Cristiana, that sounds like a great approach and I will be looking forward to the results. I am in the same boat as you. I don't experience overt symptoms with minor, cross contamination level exposures so I sometimes will indulge in those "processed on equipment that also processes wheat . . ." or items that don't specifically claim to be gluten free but do not list gluten containing grains in their ingredient list. But I always wonder if I am still experiencing sub acute inflammatory reactions. I haven't had any celiac antibody blood work done since my diagnosis almost 25 years ago so I don't really have any data to go by.

      I've been reflecting on this further. The lowest TTG I've ever managed was 4.5 (normal lab reading under 10).  Since then it has gone up to 10.   I am not happy with that.  I can only explain this by the fact that I am eating out more these days and that's where I'm being 'glutened', but such small amounts that I only occasionally react. I know some of it is also to do with eating products labelled 'may contain gluten' by mistake - which in the UK means it probably does! It stands to reason that as I am a coeliac any trace of gluten will cause a response in the gut.  My villi are healed and look healthy, but those lymphocytes are present because of the occasional trace amounts of gluten sneaking into my diet.   I am going to try not to eat out now until my next blood test in the autumn and read labels properly to avoid the may contain gluten products, and will then report back to see if it has helped!

      Hi, I posted before about my son's legs shaking after gluten. I did end up starting him on vit b and happily he actually started sleeping better and longer.  Back to my 4 year old. She had gone back to meltdowns, early wakes, and exhaustion. We tested everything again and her ferritin was lowish again (16) and vit d was low. After a couple weeks on supplements she is cheerful, sleeping better and looks better. The red rimmed eyes and dark circles are much better.   AND her Ttg was a 3!!!!!! So, we are crushing the gluten-free diet which is great. But WHY are her iron and vit d low if she's not getting any gluten????  She's on 30mg of iron per day and also a multivitamin and vit d supplement (per her dr). That helped her feel better quickly. But will she need supplements her whole life?? Or is there some other reason she's not absorbing iron? We eat very healthy with minimal processed food. Beef maybe 1x per week but plenty of other protein including eggs daily.  She also says her tummy hurts every single morning. That was before the iron (do not likely a side effect). Is that common with celiac?
