Ok, so canola makes my guts quiver. Yesterday Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia gave me immediate D. And this morning eating an egg seems to have made my legs weak. Wow. All I seem to be able to eat is whole meats and veggies right now!!! It's getting a bit tedious! I have an appt later this month with an integrative med doc to try to figure out what in the world is going on with me!! Even if I do have MS (still going through testing -- have had inconclusive MRI's and getting my lumbar puncture next week) I still think that food sensitivity is messing with my systems!!

So, question: Do any of you have immediate physical symtoms such as muscle aches, weakness, etc. from food insensitivities?

Any input is valuable! Thanks!

That's a good question.. I had been gluten free for a month while eating dairy and seemed to be doing well but came along and ate someone elses rice casserole where I didn't know the ingredients and had immediate D. Then I went on a binge of wheat products for 2 days. Then off gluten and dairy for several weeks until yesterday when I began to introduce small amounts of gluten to get ready for a blood test I'm having on the 15th. Yesterday the foul smelling gas returned and today after having a sandwich I felt extremely weak and my heart rate felt like it was racing. Is this what being 'glutened' is like?

Can anyone help us out?

It varies from person to person. My stomach starts feeling funny during the meal if I got glutened by it. Some people don't get sick for a couple days.

chefling, you shouldn't have been gluten-free until after your blood test. You want to be sure to eat a lot of gluten every day to TRY to make up for not eating it for a month. If you healed enough during the month, two weeks won't be enough for the blood test. I guess it all depends on how badly your intestine was damaged before you were gluten-free, if it was damaged at all .... also on how fast you heal.

Nama, it's not uncommon to be sensitive to a lot of things in the beginning. Many of us start out with just meat and veggies.

I can't answer the questions about muscle aches and weakness because mine comes from the Lyme. Maybe someone else can answer that one.

I have learned that lactose is absorbed on the tips of the villi. So it makes sense that with villi damage caused by a gluten intollerance, lactose cannot be absorbed and can be an irritant.. It is often heard here that dairy, other than gluten, can cause gluten-like symptoms, ie the BIG D.

I think that I can handle a little dairy, but not much. I don't have the brain fog with dairy that I have with gluten.

I have not had the joint aches, but a cronic back ache while on gluten and pre dx'd.

I don't know whether that is a help of not.

I used to have chronic backache which has disappeared since I went gluten-free.

My first symptom of being glutened is that my stomach makes the wierdest noises that can be heard above a surround sound TV and it feels as though something is crawling around inside it. Sometimes I feel like John Hurt in the Alien scene but I don

Wow -- the alien analogy is a cool one! lol Thanks for all the input everyone. I think I'll just have to calm down and take it one day at a time. I'll let the meat and veggies do their thing and stay away from the more exciting foods for now (until I get a handle on my situation.)

I'm thinking of adding an enzyme or something to my supplement regimine. Any suggestions? I'm feeling a bit C today.

Do you take probiotics?

For the C, maybe you need more magnesium. Stewed prunes also help ... just boil them in water and they'll absorb the water. It makes them easier to eat, too.

I keep feeling like I am pregnant, but the alien comparison is much more appropriate!

I think probiotics are great too, and I like the stewed prunes idea..I may try that for myself.

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria. Many times our guts do not have enough of the "good" bacteria. You can get some at the health food store in the refrigerated section of the supplement dept.

I take Theralac, which you can order off the internet. I like it because it has more kinds of bacteria than most and more of it.

      Gluten free food is not fortified with vitamins and minerals as regular food is.  Vitamin deficiencies are common especially in recently diagnosed persons,  Get a 25(OH)Vitamin D blood test. And work on raising it.  The safe upper blood level is around 200 nmol/L.    "Low serum levels of 25(OH)D have been associated with increased risk of autoimmune disease onset and/or high disease activity. The role of vitamin D in autoimmune diseases   🏋️‍♂️Good job!   I find the commercial milk will give me mild stomach burn at night, while pasture/grassfed only milk does not bother me at all.  While you are healing, listen to your body.  If it hurts to eat something, eat something else.  You may be able to eat it later, or maybe it is just not good for you.  Lower your Omega 6 to 3 ratio of what you eat.  Most omega 6 fatty acids are inflammation causing.    The standard american diet omega 6:3 ratio is estimated at upward of 14:1.  Thats why fish oil works

      I  notice a reaction to tea bags, possibly due to gluten or other substances. Is this recognizable?

      The blood tests you had done are not the main ones. The two main ones are the "Total IGA" (to check for IGA deficiency) and the "TTG-IGA". Current guidelines for the "gluten challenge" when people have been gluten free for a significant time period are the daily consumption of at least10g of gluten (about the amount in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for at least two weeks leading up to the day of the blood draw. That should give you some perspective.

      Thank you, really.  I took a test for DGP-IgA and DGP-IgG. Effectively, it is not enough to discard Celiac Disease. I was consuming gluten until then, I only started gluten-free some days ago, when the symptoms became horrible and now I feel considerably better, which is a second confirmation that gluten is the main problem. It's been more than 4 years I have the same suspect, when I first thought gluten was causing me problems, I made a gluten-free diet for a year, I felt really good as never before. However, neither I or my parents were well informed about Celiac disease, so none of us tried to make further exams. My father suffer digestive problems and other members of my family as well. Unfortunately, no one have ever been tested for Celiac disease. I'll have to restart eating gluten in the next weeks, so I can make a serious blood test in laboratory, hopefully between two or three months.

      As Scott said, in order for celiac disease testing to be valid, you need to be eating generous amounts of gluten on a regular basis for weeks or months before the blood draw. The blood tests are designed to detect antibodies that the immune system produces in response to the ingestion of gluten. It takes time for them to build up in the blood to detectable levels.
