Gluten Free Italian Sausage?

tracii

Recommended Posts

tracii Newbie

Hey Everyone,

I've never been sure about the ingredients in Italian sausage (there never seems to be an ingredient list on the packages!).

I'd REALLY love a pasta dinner with Italian sausage - does anyone have any info on gluten-free Italian sausage brands or info at all?

Please respond! (I did do a search but apparently too many topics showed up for the search to work).

Thanks in advance!

Johnsonville sausages are gluten free (except for their Beer Brats) and I believe they have an Italian Sausage. But you should always read the labels.

If you have a Wild Oats near you, you can ask the butcher which meats are gluten-free, they have a list. I buy an Italian chicken sausage that has none of the bad stuff in it. It's good, too. I don't know the brand, but it's on the list.

I use the Jennie-O turkey sausage, it is safe. I always read the label! I think because it is turkey the sausage is not as "strong" as other sausages. But we love it for pasta.

I make my own. Before you groan, it's not that hard, I make them skinless. My aunt did, and she wasn't even gluten intolerant.

And there is nothing like pork sausage in sauce..yum.

Basically, ground pork in bowl, add whatever seasonings you like, mix, chill for about an hour, roll into sausage shape, cook.

They are awesome.

there's a local brand here in Western PA called Uncle Charlies that is gluten-free and pretty good. They have sweet, hot and VERY hot.

Whole foods also says their Whole Ranch Sweet Italian Sausage is gluten-free (as are their chorizo and beef franks).

al Fresco sausages say gluten free right on the label...they are my favorite!

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
